Even after all this time, having such a great Explanation on how to adjust the Timing on your NA Miata Engine right, is sooo absolutely insane and Cool! Thank you Miata King for sharing your all mighty Knowledge! I am currently after 344500Km on the Clock on it to replace Water and Oilpump and doing aswell beside the Timing belt also the Cylinder Head Gasket. My Dear Natsumi (95' 90HP 1.6) deserves this after putting over 109K Km on the Clock since my ownage of her. (Got her in late 2018 with 225K Km on the Clock) :D

For new readers (Mike has retired, and the shop is closed?), yes there HAS to be 19 teeth between the cam sprocket marks at TDC, when the timing belt cog notch is TDC. If this is not so, your Miata won't run right, and be down power. Mike's timing belt tension setting is at best, imprecise. All Mazda service manuals, and the same procedure in Haynes NA Miata (only) manual clearly set out WHY, and how to do it better. Once the belt is on the sprockets correctly, as best you can determine, push the timing belt tensioner bearing frame strongly to your right, over tensioning the belt in most cases. This prevents the belt from jumping teeth while you work further. Then tighten the bearing frame bolt to retain belt engagement on all 3 sprockets From index position, which is all 3 timing belt sprockets* have their appropriate mark at TDC, pistons #1 and #4 are TDC. Rotate the crankshaft 1 5/6th revolutions, such that the notch in the back rim of the timing belt cog aligns with the cast arrow on the face of the oil pump. Mark will be 60º before TDC. THEN loosen the bolt holding the tensioner bearing frame, letting ONLY the spring set tension. Then tighten the tensioner frame bolt. IF you carefully removed all slack in the top and driver side runs of the timing belt, the spring has set tension properly. Rotate engine 11/6th rotation, to see if the index marks all line up correctly. If so, properly torque the tensioner frame bolt, and proceed with engine assembly. This position for setting belt tension is the one place in the two revolutions the engine makes to complete all cylinder's strokes, and has the least rotational forces on the cams from cam lobes working against valve springs that are open, of anywhere in the 2 rotation evolution. This offers the least confounding force from the cams against the belt, as you attempt optimal belt tension. Correct belt tension on All 3 belts on Miatas is the same. A 10 Kg downforce in the middle of the top run of each belt, will deflect the belt about 3/8". Mazda references, and Haynes, offer this in millimeters as well. 10Kg is 22 lbs. *Gears engage gears, Only. Cogs and sprockets engage chains or toothed belts. You live in American, use proper American engineering terms. All the bolts mentioned above are Not bolts, but screws. Screws engage threading in a hole. Bolts engage a nut, but that fight is pointless at this late date.

@@michaelpaar4261 It matches what I suspected, the car that I bought from a used car seller, a BMW x3, uses about 3.9 ltr per 1000 km. This scammer tried to deceive me that it is only valve seals and fixed piston rings and did an engine flush and poured in additives and ordered me to drive 1000 km, which did not help anything. I had the car at a bmw workshop for a check and consumption measurement of engine oil and they told me that this car had been with them before due to an overheated engine and they were sure that there was damage to one or more oil rings since the compression, pcv and valve seals were ok . My lawyer has ordered this scammer to take the car back and cancel the purchase because you can't repair an engine that uses so much oil with engine flush and additives

Having no experience with power antennas, a week after I purchased my new to me '97 someone pointed out the antenna was still not fully retracted. I had noticed a few crimped edges around the antenna where the last sleeve stops. We'll yesterday I took some bent nose pliers and removed the top nut with ease but that rubber bushing was fused to the coupler was a PITA to remove. Since the mast was crimped, it wouldn't slide off going up so instead I hacksaw'ed off the brass looking collar at the bottom and slid the two pieces off. The coupler and bushing are fused together and I won't be doing anything to remove them and damage a discontinued part. I do want to mention that my NA8 did have a very fine rubber o-ring I could have easily dropped had I not noticed it. Wanted to share my experience with anyone else looking to do this in the future. The replacement mast in 2023 was $79.99 shipped in the US, Japan had some for $50-$60 on ebay but would take way too long. Funny enough while I wait for a new mast, my bluetooth radio transmitter still worked fairly well with only a minor drop in quality!

Hello, Thank you for your concerns. To my knowledge the difference between the wheels was due to production demands. Mazda estimated a production run of 5 to 7 thousand cars the first year of production not 30,000. The demand forced other foundries to produce the wheels, so the different castings. Have never researched when or where or what years for the different types. The King of Miatas. Mike.
