My chickens like goat skim milk, but they get EXCITED about clabbered milk & call the others like a mother hen calls her chicks or a rooster calls the hens to a snack. So after cream separating with the machine (can't get much cream without it, and the one dairy cow we raised & AI vet bred 5 times never got pregnant but she did get mastitis the vet couldn't fix over a year & a half, then she went gangrene after the udder infection perforations happened, then couldn't walk and the vet had to put her to sleep. It was so sad. She was such a sweet cow. We did not feed her grain, just pasture & 2nd cutting hay. She didn't like first cutting hay. The kids also got several injuries from the cow even though she was a super sweet cow. So I do dairy goats, mostly Nigerian Dwarf does & bucks. 10% milkfat, super cute animals, easy on fencing compared to our large breed does & buck. I also like that I can put a large breed does into the front passenger seat. The large buck (Boer/Kiko 18 mo) fit into a large dog crate in the truck bed. They're easier to transport than cows. The cow was $3100 & many more expenses. Goats are cheaper to buy & breed. So much more convenient for us, and goat milk & sheep milk is easier for humans to digest than cow milk. Baby goats travel in TSC and pet stores etc easier than baby cows. We do miss our cow very much and want to get one again, but it was so heartbreaking that she only lived to 3 years old. Goats & Sheep are easier to process yourself into meat & dog food, chicken food. We've done deer ourself last year. The cow won prizes as the county fair as a 4-H animal.

Shawn and Beth pushed us over the edge in 2022 with their dairy cow talk at Rory Feek’s farm. Beware! We went from zero cows to six cows over the next 2 1/2 years! 😂 Our jersey girl just had her third calf on our farm (last pregnancy was twins!) and we raise the bull calves for meat or sell for breeding (registered jersey bulls sell for $2500 in our area!). She’s producing 5 gallons a day so we sell the extra to friends and family. The proceeds of our milk sales pay for ALL of our outside farm costs. Dairy cows are where it’s at!

We live in Shenandoah Valley. We raise and grow about 95% of our food on five acres. We love it and we have started doing classes in butchering chickens eventually we will have a butcher shop. My wife teaches 101 and 102 sourdough classes. Hopefully we will make it to HOA this year.

This is a great interview. Thank you for sharing. It would seem that most people are not able to have profitable small farms and homesteads without making considerable income from other sources as well (books, online lessons, consultations).

Jill, I'm learning that mama lesson too - I have always had a gazillion side hustles and my 13 month old absolutely wants my attention 24/7 so I am honestly taking every day as I can. I feel unseen, alone, and useless but I know it's the most important job. Definitely in that stage of just doing everything with love in my heart and knowing I will get some time to myself one day...

This is awesome! I was unfamiliar with Jill Ragan. I'd love to see a trend of everyone becoming more self-sufficient, whether they live on some acreage or live in a small apartment with a tiny balcony.

Since we are omnivores and not vegetarians our homestead has animals and we always will. However our vegetable garden expands every year and we added more fruit trees. Beavers killed one of our largest, once very productive, pear trees but we plan to plant more. Last year we added blueberry bushes and figs. We have what I call gardeners treats all around and we continue to add them. When we are out gardening which is an every morning activity here, picking a few treats of our labor is a welcome advantage to gardening. A couple years ago we added strawberries but we also grab a fig or small tomato. Oh! Or and apple in the fall. Good gardening to all.

sadly in Canada we're not allowed to purchase nor sell raw milk. The only way to get it is to have a dairy cow. Theres an option for "shares" in the cow and only those are allowed to get the milk. Canada needs to remove the laws and regulations on farming practices

I wish i could get raw milk. We had a dairy that produced unhomoginized milk. It stayed fresh longer. It was great milk. But the National Coof caused them to close the dairy.😢😢😢😢😢

I'm an American living on the north island of NZ for the last 2 years. There are hundreds of dairy farms up here. My kiwi partner was raised on a dairy farm, but went into construction instead of following in his father's footsteps. However, he knows cows, he knows milking. Having grown up in Seattle, this is all very new to me. I own 4 Jerseys who all live on a farm not too far from us, but my partner and I are going to buy land and build a small house starting at the end of this year. He is very supportive of my homesteading dream and will be a big help to me when we bring Bon Ton (Bonnie) to live with us (I'm actually in the process of selling the other 3 right now because we're in a seller's market for dairy cows right now). We're also going to raise a few Dexters for meat and milk. I'm so excited and I can't wait to start our homesteading journey!

Liked this very much. One thing that seems a bit dangerous to pursue is the Benedictine Option that Salatin (who is a fabulous guy, just disagree on this one point) mentions, would be NOT advisable. The author of the option believes in retreat from the public sphere. That = defeat. We must stay engaged so people like Massie, etc., have backup and courage to pursue noble goals.

A few years ago our local non gmo feed seller was moving warehouses and was deeply discounting their feed grade Redmond salt. Yes, yes I did buy half a ton and would have bought more if my truck would have carried it.😁 Also, reading the ingredients on a basic white table salt container is scary-dextrose?! Who needs more of THAT in their food?!

It all starts with desire and knowledge! You can homestead anywhere, so start now where you are. Read a few books, watch a few videos, find a mentor, and do it! Pick one realistic short-term goal, one challenging long-term goal, and one dream to work towards, and enjoy the journey.

I’m so thankful he spoke of the appreciation of taking a life. I had a prayer of thanksgiving before processing our own turkeys. I still had to have someone assist me with the processing. It was challenging but a very rewarding process & truly made me appreciate all our food in a brand new way in a way I can’t put into words. Thank you Joel & this channel for sharing this knowledge. God bless you.

What if I'm Catholic? I view all my protestant brothers and sisters as part of Jesus' flock, we are all one Church - the chosen now, no the Jews, who have lost that status when they rejected Jesus. I want to support and help as much as I can, as I've been blessed and make good money, but I also want my wife and future children to be covered in case something trying occurs.
