Debussy himself disavowed the term, "impressionism." Unfortunately, we don't have another commonly accepted term of classification, except perhaps "Debussyism." Rimsky-Korsakov referred to some of the harmonic vagaries of his pupil Stravinsky as "Debussyist." Perhaps the term "Symbolist" would apply; Debussy did indeed identify with the French symbolist poets, and set their lyrics to music. But music doesn't often deal in symbols, except perhaps in Baroque word painting, or... Wagnerian leitmotifs, something from which Debussy vigorously sought to distance himself. So, perhaps we are left with... "impressionism."

Impressionism means an artist is trying to capture the impression an environment leaves on your senses. It focuses on atmosphere.

Impressionism is a name for an artistic movement of the late 19th century. In art it's hard to define a term like you do in, say, mathematics; it's often more instructive to list examples and contrast it with music written earlier. Listen to Mozart and Scarlatti, then to Chopin and Schubert, and then to Debussy. Any differences?

Debussy said that is work and what he tries to do should be more associated to the painter called J. M. W. Turner. So I checked J. M. W. Turner's work, and yes for me it seems to reflect more what I hear in debussy's music. What do you think ?
