I have also heard of Amazon copying the likeness of someone else's product and mass producing it to sell at a lower price than the owner's original price. All of the seller's sites very likely have a section in their agreement like this.

Oooh. I'm not liking what I'm hearing. Sounds like outright thievery to me. I'll be avoiding them - won't be signing up any time soon! Artists already are being stolen from left and right, don't need a giant conglomerate like these guys stealing their intellectual property!

There are a lot of big companies that rip off small creators. That's why I'm always weary. I prefer to wait and see, rather than just invest all my time and effort into something and then get ripped off. In general, I know people love to hate on Etsy, and I understand Etsy isn't without its issues. HOWEVER, Etsy doesn't sell physical products, so I know my IP is safe with them, in that context.

if you read the coyright laws, it may change your mind. Selling your pattern and allowing some to use it to sell their make, does not extend to mass priduction. it would hold up in court
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo17 күн бұрын
She didn't use the pattern to make the mass produced version though. The pattern is what is covered by copyright laws (which is under the umbrella of intellectual property law). Ashley didn't use the pattern when mass producing the item. So, respectfully, I disagree with your take. But that's why the law is so interesting. If you and I were arguing this in court, on opposite sides, we'd need to find legal precedent to back up both our stances because the law is never black and white, cut and dry.

Thank you so much!!! I appreciate you!!! I do believe I am doing the scrunchie tutorial. But you'll probably be dissatisfied to know that the weaving in ends part is a little bit of a "wing it" process because there's like hardly any place to hide them on the scrunchie haha. You just fasten off and leave a long enough tail that it's not going to make your work unravel and then you just tuck that tail under the stitches around the outside of the ponytail holder. If that makes sense lol. I'll show it in the video, but I didn't want you to have to wait for me haha.

Basically, the creator is giving Michaels the inexhaustible right to use, promote, sell, etc., and benefit without paying the creator one dime. I do believe you get a percentage off the sale of your product but otherwise, the creator gives up rights to Michaels. Just this morning, I received a second request from Leigh-Ann Colates to join Makerplace. This is why I have my own website and social media sites where I promote and sell my products. I do not have an Etsy site and will not do Makerplace either. Crafters beware! Thanks for educating folks on this.

I wish other people would understand that if they're undercharging for their work, they're just making it even harder for the rest of us to actually get paid the ammount our time, effort, and skill are worth.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo27 күн бұрын
It definitely can. However, even in the 2 years I've been in business, I've already started to see a shift in mindset in this area. People are realizing this isn't just their granny's favorite hobby. It's art too. And not only is it valuable, they also need to appreciate their granny more for all the things she's made for them over the years haha. Not everyone will feel this way, but as crochet gets more and more mainstream, more and more people will start to "get it".
@twinsgardening89628 күн бұрын
I spent 8 hours crocheting a big snake to sell and my mom was trying to shame me into selling it for $10, even after I explained to her how long it took and how many materials it required. I used hand-harvested canna lily seeds to fill the head rather than polyfill. She's been a professional artist her whole life, you'd think she's grasp how valuable an artist's time is. But nope!! "it's just a hobby, no one wants to pay a lot for it" yeah, because you don't think I'm worth even paying minimum wage.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo27 күн бұрын
Omg! That's absolutely worth FAR MORE than $10! There are definitely always going to be people who see it as a "hobby", but that's why we gotta continue to educate people. I get asked all the time how long various items take and people are always shocked. It's far longer than people realize. However, once that clicks, they start understanding why the pricing is what it is.
@twinsgardening89628 күн бұрын
16:30 yes. thank you. I'm in some facebook groups for sharing free patterns and someone will ask how much they should price something that took them like 4 hours to make, and people will just go "where I live you couldn't sell that for more than $8, I recommend $5" and it's like. what is wrong with you. You wouldn't dream of accepting that kind of payment from an employer.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo27 күн бұрын
Yes! Exactly! I know in some circumstances traveling to other areas isn't feasible. However, I suspect for a lot of people, it's more doable than they realize. I didn't realize how many different events were actually around me until I started working them. I know that's not going to be the same for everyone, but it's unrealistic to habitually undercharge.

I am moving away from amigurumi. But I don't mind sewing on pieces. All the no sew pieces honestly look all the same to me. Usually it is ball shaped with popcorn feet. YO or YU I think I mix them in the same piece. I have ultimately decided to crochet for myself. The thought of crocheting the same thing 20 times in a row just sounds exhausting. I don't have anything wrong with felt eyes. Especially if you are making something for little kids. You need something that does not have safety eyes. I don't follow trends. Like no I don't want to make a leggy frog.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo27 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's true. A lot of them follow that pattern or just have generic kind of chunky hour glass body and bobble feet lol. That's an interesting take, mixing both techniques in the same piece. It doesn't make things wonky? I've heard that YU tends to make a smaller piece, but I've never tested this to know how much of a difference it can make in size. I can see it being enjoyable to crochet just for yourself too, but for me, I like doing something I like that also makes me money haha. It is worth noting, and I'm sure you've considered this, but you can run your business any way you want. There is no law that says you HAVE to make multiples of any item. Heck, that could be your shtick, one of a kind pieces. I personally still wouldn't use felt eyes for anything that's for a child under 3, but I feel like they're good for anyone over 3. And I just think they add more character than basic black safety eyes. Omg, leggy frogs lol. They go through phases of selling well, so I do try to have a few in stock, but dang, that's some of my least favorite patterns to make. Idk why. It's not like it's hard or time consuming to make them. But they don't bring me joy lol. They were fine at first, but now there's no joy haha. Except for when someone hands me money for them haha. There's some joy in that.

I am new to your channel. I am a history/ government teacher, and my side gig is teaching kids 6 to 18, knitting and crocheting. I taught myself to crochet over 25 years ago and hated it. I was horrible at and was doing it all wrong. I taught myself to knit around 20 plus years ago. I am actually a certified master knitter. I also am certified level 2 knitting instructor and a certified level 2 crochet instructor. I did it over the lockdown during thr Pandemic to keep myself occupied. So it is not needed to teach. I do not like to crochet things other than amigurumi. I don't like knitting Amigurumi, so it works out well. Anyway... I, too, crochet for money mostly. I also think sewing isn't to big of a deal. It's not my favorite, but some things need it. I think bla k yarn is miserable. I solve this issue by using a Otte Light. I have an otte ring light that I can move around easily and it is fantastic. So I recommend an Otte light. I got mine for $15 at JoAnns. They are normally $40 for my style. It was sale and then I had an additional al 25% off your entire purchase coupon. I like printer friendly versions. Annie Careaway provides them with pictures but lower quality. I don't like velvet yarn either. But most other plushie yarns are good. I hate Red Heart. But not for the same reasons listed. I request my students not get any acrylic yarn like Red Heart at all. I actually prefer they get beginner crochet yarn like Woobles. It does not have to be Woobles. You can get it on Amazon in a generic version that is just as fantastic. My students learn how to crochet so much easier with it. Then they can move to other yarns. I also agree that you need to learn to read patterns. It is important. I have students who want me to tell them the stitch and number to do and don't want to count or learn to read patterns in both knitting and crochet. I try to teach them why they need to do both. Sorry this was so long but it was fun to share.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo27 күн бұрын
Hi! And welcome!!! I'm a certified level 1 crochet instructor!!! I hope to completely the second level next year!!! I can't knit. However, one day, I'd like to learn and then also get certified there too!!! I've never used a ring light with black yarn but I do think the use of a neck light was helpful. But a ring light is probably much brighter for anyone who may need a little extra help seeing!!! Printing patterns is a must for me because a lot of times, if I can help it, I like to 'unplug' while I crochet. Velvet looks great when the project is finished. I really actually like the look. Just not enough to endure using it at this time lol. But maybe one day when I have more time to practice. But since we both crochet for money, you know, time is money, so I can't be using my time unwisely. And yeah, regular acrylic can be quite splitty. The Woobles yarn is pretty good. I definitely think having a solid more "rope" like yarn, instead of one with individual strands twisted together, is easier for a beginner. And I fully agree. Reading patterns is a must! I have freehanded many an item, but I wouldn't have been able to gain those skills without reading patterns and essentially understanding what numbers make what shapes. I love that you shared!!! I like chatting and when I'm filming, it's a one sided conversation with no one to chat with! That's why I still respond to every single comment! This part is my favorite part of doing KZbin!!!

agree to disagree. not everything make from yarn is a luxury item. I would say i personally understand the quality and longevity of a good quality handmade item that is made to fill a specific need and made by a skilled craftsman/woman. Pricing will always need to cover the cost of materials at minimum, or they wont be able to keep doing it for long. If people are flocking to cheap items, those are probably not the clients you want either. Maybe your niche should change if you are finding it too competitive. maybe you should buck the trend and make something useful that is quick and can be fairly cheaply made that people can feel good about and when it wears out. maybe they come back.
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCoАй бұрын
I wouldn't say necessarily that the items themselves are luxury. HOWEVER, I do think there's a clear difference in value between a Walmart teddy bear and a crocheted teddy bear even if they're all synthetic materials. You're paying for my time and skill more than the materials in a lot of cases.

Hi question! does it cost alot to start something for yourself? as a small business. i wanna start my own making cat collars <3
@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo2 ай бұрын
This is going to be a really unsatisfying answer, because "it depends". Of course, in all scenarios, you're going to need to buy the materials to keep making your products, but in some areas, as far as upfront costs go, that could be it. Where I live, you don't need to have a business license, so I didn't have that expense. However, some people do. Where I live, there's a free market I could do twice a month, so as far as paying for events, you could get around that sometimes. Though, usually, I expect to pay about $50 per event. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But of course, if you're choosing to do events, then you need event stuff, like a table, a table cloth, a tent, a chair, etc. In most cases, you will be responsible for paying sales tax after making sales. You'll have to look up how much for your area. However, this typically only applies if you make money, so theoretically, you'll have money to pay those at that point. If you're planning on selling online, the cost of that could range. I think Etsy has a one time fee of $15 to get started at this point, then typically your fees come out once you make sales. But until you do, you'll still have to pay for the listings, but those are only like 20 cents per listing I do believe, so if you're not also paying for advertising (which is optional), then this can be pretty affordable compared to paying for something like a Squarespace website which is close to $40 a month, every month, regardless of whether you make sales or not. So, it just depends. At first, I'd just get the bare minimum for supplies. Keep color options and styles limited, so your expenses are low. If you are going to do events, see if you there's initially anyone you can borrow anything from as far as set up goes. Maybe you have a friend with a tent or table already. But you can always grow your business as your income grows which is what I've done. So if there's things you want now that just aren't in budget, that's completely understandable and total normal. You just work your way there.
