1:52:08 One of the rare occasions on which I have to disagree with Christopher Hitchens - the Soviet Union was aggressively anti-Orthodox before Operation Barbarossa, after which Stalin committed to a 'rapprochement' with the Church for he believed it would provide a powerful means of rallying support for the war effort. There is even a name for this prominent feature of the Bolshevik Party general line: 'Marxist-Leninist atheism'. And let's not forget that the series of 'terrors' in the USSR began with the Red Terror under Lenin, and he was by no means religious.

As a non-US person, I find two things noteworthy: E pluribus unum does not in particular refer to make many into one. But it can be read as ‚many form one‘ which means they don‘t need to converge but can stay very different. And I guess that was what originally was thought of. As you had slavery and non-slavery in one, you could even go as far as having capitalist and non-capitalist ‚states‘ or popular democratic and authoritarian ‚states‘ consolidated. 2. E pluribus unum was the uniting claim against the external forces (the British empire) at play at that time. The question is what the uniting factor is these days. The US were an answer to external pressure, not internal wish for a United States of America. Trump tries to use China and the fear of decline as this. But it‘s not really enough. And if it‘s not there, things tend to succumb to centrifugal forces. Actually, the compelling idea of the US compared to everyone else was that it didn‘t require it‘s citizens to converge and still live their lifes and make a fortune. This is why immigrants flocked into it despite all other problems. But this is even destroyed under the conservatives. The original superior idea is being dismantled. I think.

GOP is extreme? Have to be to survive. How much cooperation was there REALLY from Wilson to FDR to JFK and LBJ. NO GOP President but MAYBE Ike had both houses for more than one term until Reagan! Before then it was CAVE to the DEMS OR ELSE! ESPECIALLY ON USELESS ALPHABET SOUP AGENCIES AND BUDGETS! LIBERALS, LEFTISTS, AND PROGRESSIVES HAVE NEVER MET A "PROGRAM" THEY DIDN'T LIKE. NO MATTER THE COST AND THEY NEVER GET RID OF THEM. Obama's Congress didn't even allow debate in Committee much less the floor! In EITHER TERM! FILIBUSTER was the only option left which Dems try to get rid of EVERY TIME THEY HAVE ALL HOUSES.

This is all great and everything, but the questions that are NOT answered are 1) why is this happening and 2) who is to blame for it. To me, it sounds like this is on the Republicans, but why?? As much as people say the left went crazy, Haidt’s graphs show this is not the case. It’s the right that moved further right. But why? Were they just embarrassed by George Bush’s presidential record, and was Barack Obama too popular? Very curious indeed.

Chris' response about imperialism doesnt add up as an excuse for the Bush administrations invasion of Iraq. He admitted that the US were involved in 1968 in installing the Saddam regime. This is true, but if he admits there were IMPERIAL motives from the US, and he mentions the Saudis, then he should have the sense to follow that trace back beyond 1968, because WHY is there an imperial interest for the US there, and when did it begin? He seems naive to materialist realities involving the composition of the american energy consumtion and production and how the economy relies on fossil fuel use and its price control. The american prospecting in the Middle East began in the 1930s. They signed a deal with the Saudis in the 1940s. So it is at least since WWII that there has been a motive for the US to make sure there are ways to guarantee control and influence in the Middle East. Puppet governments is one way, but war is more efficient. The man who brought up Trotsky was confused. Mixing up Trotskys theoretical writings with Stalins actions (and salting the figures with various causes of death, but I wont defend Stalin so nevermind). The first thing to know about Trotsky is that he was stalinisms biggest critic. The fact that they killed priests during the revolution, before Stalin rose to power, is perfectly logical since the orthodox russian church refused to give up power, and Stalin betrayed the communist reasoning for getting rid of the church, so that he could guarantee gaining power. And today Russia a totalitarian conservative regime. So it is not a viable example.
