@@MattsAwesomeStuff making videos for youtube is definitely not for everyone. sharing what we do is also not necessary either. but it makes the world a better place while there is so much crap online. editing is too much work but now it is actually not necessary. if you have a good mobile connection you can simply go live and explain what you do or make a one minute short. Now there is an app called youtube create and it is actually good. you can do very quick edits and upload. I am sure there are other apps also. I sometimes think of stopping making videos but from time to time someone writes a comment and tell me how thankful they are because of a video i made.. Sometimes i find a 10 year old video from someone who has 100 subscribers. And that video saves my day. Happy to hear that you are alive and well.

@- Thanks for the kind words. I just have no interest in making those kinds of videos. I like the videos that people appreciate because of the effort I put into them. This video is the vloggiest video I've made and, it's awful. What I found is that filming slows me down on projects by at least 500%, and videoediting uses about an hour every minute of video. And I have enough problems ever finishing a project. And I haven't had a shop in 10 years, so, that's been hard to just have space to film and places to do stuff.

@@MattsAwesomeStuff %100 same problem i also have. choice is like sharing something or nothing. i also hate my videos because i am actually a filmmaker and the videos i make just weirdly too bad. like i want them to be bad. In my opinion it doesnt matter in what format but we should just share what we do in a way which is least trouble for us. Believe me it helps some people. For me it also felt weird to record a 60 second short to explain something in a weirdly fast way. but now i like it because making a 20 minute video takes too much time and the information i give is kind of the same. Make one long video per year if you want. I moved to Germany to live with my wife, now we are not together anymore so i am all alone in Germany, last summer my father died, a couple of months ago i lost my job, i also dont have a workshop like never..... collecting garbage from the streets when i need some material like you did with your MOTs. Worst time of my life but there are people in much worse condition. I still make videos, even worse quality than before but they still help some people. Last night someone asked me if i can start a live stream so we can just chat. In a way it is useless. In a way it is nice. Of course it is you decision but if you think that you are doing something which can help someone else it doesnt matter how you share it. Sometimes one sinle photo you upload in instagram helps someone. Thanks for the MOT videos.

Excellent tutorial! I'm going to to do this on my transformer. It's 240 volt in Australia. I was going to use on secondary winding 6 to 8 gauge? I'm hoping to get over 20 amps if possible? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍oh btw liked again. Sweet job!
@MattsAwesomeStuff2 жыл бұрын
You can get any amperage you want. The more important question is: What voltage do you want? That will determine if you have room for the number of amps you want. 20 amps needs about 12g wire to not overheat (in housing wiring). But it all depends on how much voltage you need.
@dragan32902 жыл бұрын
@@MattsAwesomeStuff I'm aiming for 14.9 volts for deep cycle battery charger. If I have 240 input and say 18volt output with no load? I was going to just put a 50 amp bridge rectifier? Maybe some capacitors etc? I would love to get even higher amperage if possible? Thanks for the quick reply appreciated cheers!👍👍👍
@MattsAwesomeStuff2 жыл бұрын
@@dragan3290 - Okay, few things: 1 - if you give a "12v" lead acid battery more than about 14.8v (14.4 is safer), you'll boil it and ruin it. So I'd target no more than 14.4, and, you could target 13.8v if you wanted. 2 - When you convert AC to DC, because AC is measured in "RMS" (similar to an average, but different), the peak voltage is actually 1.41x as high as the RMS. I.E. "240vac" has 338v peaks. A capacitor helps smooth this, at the max, by being really thirsty when it gets to the max, and then trying to carry some surplus until the next peak. But either way, 338v would be the peak, and would be what the battery charges to. So that's no good. So if you're targeting 13.8vdc, you need 9.8vac max. 3 - Your bridge rectifier will force electricity to go through 2 diodes, (2 of the 4, regardless of polarity), each which will drop 0.6-0.7v. So, you have to add 1.2-1.4vdc to your DC target. So 13.8vdc target becomes 15vdc target. Then backing up, you still have to divide that by 1.41, so, your target is really really 10.6vac. 4 - Go through the math now, if you have (I don't know, test it) 240 turns on your primary, then you need about 10 turns on your secondary (because you probably don't want to be over). You could do 10.5 turns, or, just play around with it a bit. 5 - You didn't say how big your transformer is, but let's say it's average of about 800 watts. 800 / 10.5 = 76 amps. So, you could technically support 76 amps, power-wise. It's going to get hot, but you could do it. You want to use the thickest wire you can get away with, so if you have 6g, as long as you can fit 10.5 turns in there, you're good. That's roughly what 6g could handle. Else, drop down to 8g. 6 - Because it's not an intermittent use device, you really really really need the microwave fan on there, non-stop. It's going to sound like a jet engine. So, I suggest, if possible, using smaller wire for your secondary, and trying to add a bunch more turns to your primary. Like, an extra 50-100 if you could, but, whatever you can manage. You'd need another 240 turns if you wanted hope of it running without a fan, and even then, an old PC heatsink on the core would help. Of course, this affects your turns ratio, and the size of wire you can use on your secondary. 7 - When you coil, leave that extra space around the outside like I showed you, to give yourself a chance of aircooling it. So, there you go, you have some choices to make.

This is a really informative series. I learned a lot about transformers generally and MOT in particular. A couple questions, although I understand I am a while behind. If I have a MOT from a 120 volt microwave oven, I can’t connect the MOT from that oven to 240 volts because it won’t have sufficient windings? 2. If I want to make a spot welder, making the secondary with one very heavy U-shaped turn is preferable to two or three less heavy turns? 3. On the secondary you turn, why do you want so much gap between the core and the outer loops of the secondary? You used a pencil width at each end, but the original secondary seems like it was very snug to the core? Is that because the original was machine made and could have closer tolerances? 4. The core of the MOT has very shape corners. Is the transformer performance diminished if, after fully dismantling the MOT the edges of the corners were softened a little bit? Thank you got this excellent YT series. Lots of help.

Hi Matt , AWESOME videos ! I was hoping you can make a 100 amp batter charger ? I didn't see anymore videos ? Thanks for reply Matt !
@MattsAwesomeStuff4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for late reply. Yes, 100 amp battery charger is possible, but you would need a 1500 watt MOT. Also, it's only good for short term (jumping), not a walk away charger because the MOT would melt. To build a battery charger, plan on 11v output. You'll need a 100 amp FWB rectifier ($10-20) or 4 diodes to convert it to DC, and then some large capacitance to help smooth it (20v capacitors, electrolytic, at least a few thousand uF). The FWB will eat 1.4v because the path is through two diodes (each eat 0.7V), so you'll have around 9.6 volts after that, but AC's peak is 1.4x it's RMS voltage, and your battery will charge up to the peak, so, 9.6v * 1.4 = 13.4v. That's about right for a lead-acid "12v" battery. Car alternators are often set to 13.8v. To build a charger you can walk away from, you need to add almost double the turns on the primary. Shoot for the same target on the secondary. You're not going to get much for amps, maybe 20-30amps. Check it to see how hot it gets.
