Its ironic hearing this story, because I was in a similar situation back in July. I was more in Jay's position. I had a larger blue belt go balls to the wall on an ankle lock on me and injured my foot (I'm still dealing with the pain from it). It was strange because I was fairly relaxed, it was a Saturday morning, and I even knew I would have to tap because he had longer legs then me, despite my attempts to escape. I didn't expect him to break my foot. Immediately after, in which I yelled and tapped vigourously, he never asked if I was okay, and I was now pissed off and came at him. However, I had enough self control not to hurt him. I at one point had him in a fully locked out armbar (the dude also doesnt tap to anything) and held it there worrying that he would rather me break his arm, than "lose" a roll. I let it go and that was that. I didn't talk to him right away, but decided I should make peace with him. I apologized for my outburst and was willing to look past his egregious actions which led to it. He instead he felt it was all my fault and I should've told him in the roll to cool it, rather than talking to him afterwards. I found it odd considering he went 0-60 in a matter of seconds, giving me no time to tap. I recognize I should have walked away after his own outburst which injured me. The gym owner and instructor had a similar reaction to you. He did fact finding and interviewing. The blue belt isn't even a student here and often sneaks in without paying mat fees (like he did that day). But I got roasted, and he was never punished in any way.

Wishing you a full and speedy recovery. I think getting mad is in rolling, especially when someone injures you with reckless behavior. In Jay's case he didn't just get mad, but intentionally injured his training partner after getting angry which I should have recognized as a sign that BJJ is not for Jay's temperament. Thanks for sharing your experience and i wish you all the best in your Jiu Jiitsu journey.

Very tough call Brother. Thank you for sharing. Being a forgiving person, as I know you are as well, I’d probably would have made the same decision. In retrospect I guess the purple belt should have known better and perhaps his actions were unforgivable because of the violation of trust that guides those involved in all rolls. I’m sorry some students left because of it but happy Ian stayed and is no doubt both a great friend and student and also one full of forgiveness as well.

Do you think it was a mistake to have him apologize to Ian or do you also think it is a mistake to let the purple belt just stay in general, regardless of having him address it with Ian? So, would you say this kind of incident deserves no second chance? I am sure that you don't kick students out for just any and all mistakes. However, I am curious where you draw the line. Perhaps that would be another great question of the week! :) Where do we draw the line on kicking students out? What is a good list of situations that warrant immediate permanent removal of student from school? Intentional hurting someone, any kind of harassment, sexual or otherwise, blatant defiance of head instructor/instructor of class/school, badmouthing your school to other students or schools, anything illegal, of course... etc.?
@semperfortisjiujitsu11 күн бұрын
I think the respect of the tap is sacred in BJJ. We trust our training partners with our safety knowing that in every roll we are risking serious injury with the techniques we use and if someone can get so angry that they will intentionally injure their training partners then they are not safe to be training on the mats. In this case he not only ignored the tap, but then immediately left without a care if his training partner was going to wake up and just left it up to everyone else to wake up Ian and ensure he was okay. Today I would have made a different decision than my decision 6 or 7 years ago. I agree with you that not every infraction deserves expulsion from the school, but a serious incident like this or some of the infractions you listed i think rate expulsion with no second chance at the school.
@darylrodriguez522011 күн бұрын
@@semperfortisjiujitsu I agree as well. Just wondering what your position was. I’d still like to see a separate question of the week on the subject as well … differentiating between immediate expulsion vs second chance situations. ❤.

@@semperfortisjiujitsu by the way, happy veterans day. I tried to get in when I lived in S.A. got an 82 on my asvab but was pre disqualified because they discovered I had keratoconus. I got like 2 waivers but meps wasnt havin it. Anyways I have a legit BJJ question now: in your bearded opinion, should mma fighters train in the gi or no ? And if no gi do you agree with belt promotions even though they dont tecnically wear a gi at all ?
