Beautiful machine! I have the 158.1410 (1970-71) in a cabinet - wouldn't trade it for the world. Your is (was) definitely the Cadillac of Kenmores! I've never run across an 1802 in all these years, but would covet it if I did! Thanks for the tutorial! Mine operates the same way with a green, smaller buttonhole accessory (fewer buttonhole designs) but I can also use the Kenmore standalone buttonholer - #6739 - comes with 10 buttonhole cams - so fun! Thanks again!

Would you change the cursors positions (or something else) or just keeping on working as usual and let the first/last stitches be patterned? Thanks!

if you are doing heat sensitive parts, using UV LEDs in a box works pretty well but is usually slower, depending on how bright the sun in where you are. putting the parts in a sealed box can also help reduce streaking because they wont dry so quickly and don't usually need to be wrapped. hope that helps someone.
@jsmxwll Жыл бұрын
i've had good luck by using double sided tape when i do button holes. i put it outside the button hole area so the fabric stays with the plate and can't shift. works out pretty well as long as there aren't multiple layers sliding over each other. tailor's tacks usually work to resolving that though.

I just received mine. It looked unused and came with everything, including spare needles. I can’t make it work. The yarn gets tangled around the looper. Tension nob is very tight. On the the loosest position, it is still an effort to pull the yarn. Not sure what is wrong. Should I try lace weight yarn? I was testing with fingering. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you
@heatherismakingstuff Жыл бұрын
Definitely try a thinner yarn and see how that helps. Fingering weight seems to be the absolute max I can push it without issues. Then make triple sure you have it threaded correctly and have the needle facing the right way. I also find to pull yarn through a challenge, I need to lift up the tension disks if I need to pull a length through, so that sounds normal at least. Also when you first start, make sure to hold the thread tail taut. After a stitch or two you will see it moving along and you'll know it's not tangled. It can get bunched up right at the start sometimes. Hopefully something there gets you started, it's so handy when it's working well.

@@tatyana.mikina just to clarify it does just make a chain stitch, and it will only work with fabric - without fabric it will pull right out. So the looping may be normal. If you shoot me an email with some photos maybe I can help diagnose where it's going awry

just noticed you 'struggled' to thread the carriage when changing yarn with the claw - to help with that, you can use the latch tool or the transfer tool, this helps catch the yarn the guide it into the slot where our fingers can not quite reach. actually anything long & thin will work. even a spare knitting needle or crochet hook or a skewer

Oh no don't do this without taking off the plastic parts, you must separate the pieces to do a good job in the first place, and also you don't want the metal parts to get rusty by making them wet and not being able to dry them properly. Especially the unaccessible spots where the screws hold everything in place. Plus hydrogen peroxyde, which contains oxygen, increases the oxydation process (as the word says). Let the experts do this, keep your cookie coloured machine healthy instead

Hi, thanks for the video. I would like to ask you the following question: With all the Singer/Superba I have bought, I need to use both hands to move the carriage, even just one of them (the main one), but I see that you slide it without any difficulty, could you tell me why? As a note, I have cleaned both the bed and the carriages thoroughly, improving the sliding, but still, it is still very hard. Any help please? Regards!
@heatherismakingstuff2 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor. That seems to be a common issue with some people's machines. I would suggest to make sure the plastic tubing that covers the pieces on the carriages which slides in the rails is in good condition. It might be split or otherwise damaged. If it's OK, have you tried to add any lubricant to that rail where the carriage slides? I have been using Ballistol oil, but you can also use sewing machine oil if that's easier to come by where you live. I would also oil the flippers and moving parts on the bottom of the carriages (sparingly!), and the rail in which the cursor slides. Oh and the carriages are also going to be harder to push when the cursor is attached; make sure to move it out of the way when you aren't pattern knitting. The oiling does make things a bit messy so use as little as possible, but it should make a difference. You can also take a bit of oil on a soft lint-free cloth and oil the butt ends of the needles, and put a little bit across the bed behind the needles while they are in working position so it goes into the channels, and then run the carriage over a few times, then wipe any excess. Again don't use too much and make sure you have cloths handy to wipe off the inevitable "black crud" that will come off the machine if you accidentally touch the parts you oiled. Also, if you haven't opened up the machine bed itself and cleaned out the brake spring, you might be horrified by what can build up inside of it. I have one machine that I bought for parts, on which the needles could barely move in and out. I opened it up to harvest the brake spring when my main machine's was broken, and the needles were basically stuck to the bed with crud, and the spring was so full of fluff I don't know how the needles even moved. All of this resistance would make it a lot harder to move the carriages. I hope that helps a little bit. One of the things I like the most about the Superba is how easy and light the carriage is to push compared to some other machines. It's much nicer on the shoulder when you get it moving freely. Good luck!

What's the largest size yarn you can use in a Bellinky? I'm having a hard time finding instruction booklets online
@heatherismakingstuff2 жыл бұрын
Anything up to about UK 4ply (around sock weight) seems to be ok, but fine or super fine work best in my experience. The trade off there is strength. I had a very thin wool yarn that worked great, but it was really easy to break with just pulling it. A thin acrylic though is still pretty strong. I have used something closer to a sport weight (a light DK if you're not familiar with North American terms) once, but it was hard to turn and had a tendency to split the yarn. That could be user error, but because there's no way to adjust the stitch size, you are limited to what works nicely with that size. Basically anything you could knit easily on a standard gauge knitting machine seems to be best.

Nice video. I have the Kenmore 1813, which came with most of the Buttonholer stuff - but not the metal plate. While watching your video & thus learning of the need for the metal plate part (which I did not know existed), I found & purchased on eBay another Buttonholer set complete with the plate, which will arrive in a couple of weeks. Which shape on the Template did you use to make the Eyelet ? The set I have & the new set don't show a round one, but do have an ovaly oval & a straighter oval. I'm making clothing for re-enactments which need Eyelets for closures & I've found hand-stitching them difficult, hoping to use the machine & then do some over-stitching by hand.

When changing the yarn manually you don't have to completely thread it in the guide. Taken from the manual: "Unhook the main yarn, pull it towards the front and hold it in front of the opening of the carriage, above the yarn guide (the yarn passes in front of the right hand brush). When moving the carriages towards the right hand side, stretch the yarn backwards and towards the left hand side. It will thread itself automatically" It makes thread changing easier (only when done on the left hand side of the machine)
