This is the way I've been doing all my small plots the last three years. Only difference is I spray during the dry/hot part of early to mid July. I come back 2 weeks later to broadcast the seed and use a bush hog to mow down the dead vegetation over the new seed which also works the seed down to the soil.

Hey jared as always awesome video. So u say as long as we spray with a contact killer we can seed immediately. Is 2-4-d considered a contact killer lol. And the stuff u use the glysofate or however u spell it lol, is that the “scientific name” for the spray or are there different types of that? And for the record u make this plot planting and growing interesting. Ur an inspiration for sure. Thanks.
@jaredmills2 күн бұрын
Thanks John, I appreciate you watching. 2,4-d unfortunately will have some residual associated with it, so if you include that, you'll want to wait to seed. It can depend on the weather but to be safe I'd say 10-14 days in my experience. And when I say glyphosate, it's Roundup. Glyphosate is the active ingredient. Hope that helps.

Agreed. It's as simple as it gets. It requires the right amount of rain, but if you get good seed to soil contact, it's about as good as any other method with those small seeds.

@jaredmills2 күн бұрын
@@Leehealy-wheninthewoods Yeah I'm not sure where you're located, I am in Iowa. My ideal planting time is the first week of August here for straight brassicas. However, I give myself a pretty big window, roughly July 20th to August 20th, and try to focus on planting based on the weather forecast at that point and not necessarily a calendar date. Also, my average first frost date is in the second week of October.

What was that you was riding in on ?
@user-mk4nk6fk6i26 күн бұрын
Thanks for educating us. Just subscribed for more content. Like most, I have questions but will start off easy on you.... I have an 800 acre MLDP property that I help manage. This past year, we bush hogged some of the hunting fields, drug them with land rakes to remove all of the cut weeds and grass (no chemicals used), disc harrowed the fields, drug them to break up the big stuff, harrowed again and then planted . Food plotted (fall/winter blends) portions of them and perennial rye on the remainder. We came back early spring and planted coastal for summer cover. Fields turned out beautiful and have had activity on them ever since but, that was a lot of work and it sounds like you have a process that is a little less labor intensive. So, I just purchased 73 acres for myself and am currently preparing the property but do not want to follow the same process as above. I would like to know, what are you using to kill off the weeds/grasses that you are able to go back and immediately put down fertilizer and seed that does not hamper the germination process and kill off the new seed? Location of both properties is East Texas. Recommendation for blends would be great as well for the upcoming fall planting season, I think I can get it done in time. Thanks for putting out the videos. Much to be learned.
@jaredmills19 күн бұрын
Hey Michael- thanks for reaching out and for subscribing, I appreciate it! For your question, I used a full rate of glyphosate to kill the grasses and weeds just before broadcasting the seed. Glyphosate is a contact killer so it's only going to kill stuff that is green and actively growing, it doesn't have any residual effect on the soil, which is why I was able to seed right away. As for blends, being in TX, I would recommend something like the Rut Greens Warm Climate blend. Hope that helps, my email is [email protected] if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

Jared- Are any of your seeds no plow?
@jaredmills27 күн бұрын
Hey Jeremy- yes, any of these small seeds (clover, chicory, brassicas, etc) can be just broadcasted. Each spot is a little different in terms of prep, but the better seed to soil contact you have, the better germination you'll get when just broadcasting the seed. @jaredmills27 күн бұрын
Hey Mark- I assume you're talking about after the plot has grown? If so, I typically will spray with clethodim. It takes a little while for them to die off, but it doesn't harm the other species in the food plot. Thanks for the support!

I’d like to try and get a fall plot going . Have never done a plot before. Maybe just a couple small 1/4 acre plots to try it out for the first time. So July 20-3aug 20 before a rain for planting. But before the planting what do I need to do the prep the spot I want to put the plots in? Should I mow then spray or visa versa? Spray then burn with fire once dies? The two spots I have in mind are currently fescue and canary grass mainly with various weeds
@jaredmills27 күн бұрын
Hey Sam, awesome to hear. Yes, the more your spot is prepared, the better your results will be. Assuming it is pretty tall with weeds, if possible, I would mow it, then spray about a week or so later after things start actively growing again. From there, you have some options. You could seed right into that as long as it looks like the small seeds will make it to the dirt and have good seed-to-soil contact. Or, you could burn off the dead thatch once it's completely dead so that all your soil is exposed, then broadcast the seed. Or, if you plant to disc or till, the ideal scenario is to work the ground, let whatever weeds/grass re-germinate, then spray them again in 10 days or so before broadcasting seed. That will give you the best chance of not having much weed competition in your plot. Hope that helps, I don't want it to be overwhelming for your first go at it. Feel free to reach out if I can help further. My email is [email protected].
