Very nice, and well done. I’m looking at the mamba x in 4.5 inches for the upper. I’m also looking at a Kraken lower from Tandemkross, based on Mark 4. I don’t have this setup yet, but from what I’m finding that seems to be a killer combo. Good luck!

I haven't tried the Kraken setup, but honestly if you can find a used Black Mamaba and just get the complete package - the trigger setup is awesome. It does need the striplin thumb rest for steel challenge, but nothing else. It's GM ready. For iron rights, I'd consider the 6" over the 4.5", but for optics the 4.5 is on point.

Karlos, First, I would like to thank you for providing great instructional videos and honestly assessing your mistakes so we can all learn from them. I am a super senior that just started shooting Steel Challenge the end of July this year. A major surgery made wearing a belt and holster a problem and I decided to give steel a try. I had never seen a match, or a practice, but quickly became addicted. Built a 10/22 using a Wiland Chassis, Todd is a great guy, with the rest of the parts being Volquartsen. To say its great doesn't do it justice. When you described your loss of the Pro Ears it really caught my attention. My muffs interfere with my rifle stock. Did a little surfing on KZbin and ordered a pair. I've progressed from a U class, to D, to C and very close to B with the rifle. Now that I've learned how to move on Outer Limits I should make B at the next match. Thanks! Lloyd from Michigan

Hello Llyod - Glad to hear you found the videos helpful, and even more excited to hear about your movement through the rankings. Best wishes on your B class coming soon, that really moving ! One thing about posting these videos is the memories that pop up when someone comments on one. My performance on pistol when I misplaced my ear pro resurfaced like it had just happened. Made me smile, cause that all when can do when things go super wrong. Volquartsen 10/22 rifle in a Wiland chassis is 100% a fantastic setup. Thanks for sharing your story - It's probably too cold to shoot this year, but best wishes for continuing your trek up the rankings :) Karlos

Howdy Kaden, thanks for the message. I took most of this off shooting to focus on a new career. Things are going welll, now I just to get back into competitive shape - don't like the way I look on camera on ~200 lbs. The irons sights I use are - GHOST RING - RUGER MK SERIES FIRESIGHTS On the volquartsen pistols, you only need the rear sight in order to use the Ghost ring setup. For me I can treat them more like a red dot. I started with the red dot and switching to irons between a huge learning curve. This solve the issue for me. link: shop.williamsgunsight.com/ecommerce/p/ghost-ring--ruger-mk-series-firesights-670261 Started my -work out at least an hour a day program this month, plan to start shooting again in November, and get back to videos next year. Thanks for the message, Karlos

Congrats on a fantastic pistol :). To your question: You do have to replace the rear sight with the modular rear sight from Williams Fire Sights. TandemKross only sells them as a kit with both the front and rear sights which are the ones I purchased. This is the part that worked for my pistol: Williams Fire Sights - 633505 - Ruger® 22/45 Lite Series. I kept the Volquartsen Factory front sight, but swapped the green for a red fiber rod. Next, it also requires purchasing the "Eagle Eye" Rear Peep Sight For Williams Fire Sights. This only works with the Williams sights, not the Volquartsen factory sights. Which is why you need both parts. There are other vendors that have these same parts, but I got mine from TandemKross. From owning this setup for over a year, there is a specific grip you’ll use and it’ll take a bit to learn - when you do you won’t need to adjust for far and near targets in steel challenge. Best wishes to you on your shooting journey. You picked a fantastic setup.

Will we get another season of matches soon?? It's been real cool to see the different performances match to match and it's helped me to start competing in the steel challenge this year. I only got to shoot 3 matches before the season ended in my state, but it's been my favorite hobby to do so far! (And I have too many......LOL)

Yes - I am already planning the next match season for 2025. At least four major events, locals at least a couple times a month. As for videos - maybe just the majors plus a new edition of 8 stage mind in the box series. Thanks for the note, and glad to hear it’s one of your new favorite hobbies - it’s best when you have a competitive buddy who shoots too. :)

What do you use for a holster with the gas pedal / thumb safety ledge setup on the pistols?
@mindinbox
@mindinbox 2 ай бұрын
Howdy -- great question... I don't use a holster, I currently use a pistol bag from tandemkross. I like that it holds 7 magazines, has a front of the pistol marker on the outside of the bag, and it's good priced at around $35.00 bucks. I usually shoot multiple divisions and don't like having something on my hip while I shoot, feel unbalanced. Even when I shoot carry optics, I will head to the line with the pistol in bag and then holster it. I have a buddy that uses a holster with the ledge, I'll ask him and reply if he has a tip or two.

Hey Llyod - Congrats on rise through the rankings! Two divisions already, nice! Rifle is so much fun, so is pistol, but the rifle is definitely my favorite. I used a Pelican 1040 case to hold 10 - 10/22 magazines. I rotate between the sets, the front on odd stages, and the rear on even stages. I don't know why, it just keeps one set from getting too dirty during a match. I don't use bumpers - instead my chassis is cut to allow handling of magazines without the need. If I did switch to bumpers- would use the ones made by Kurt Grimmes out of California.

What about the longer barrel option? What is your opinion on that?
@mindinbox

Totally !!! I wish I would have purchased one of each... I like the 4.5. with the comp is pretty close to 6". The 6" with the comp is around 8" but only weights only like 2 ounces more. I would prefer the longer barrel for iron sight divisions. Volquartsen all the way, unless you step up in cost for something like the CWA 2011 style pistol.

Then I found a GM shooter to chase, and for two years I shot a few times a month. Assuming you both shoot red dots, best advice I have is to dryfire practice with the dot occluded. Cover the front of the dot, I really helps develop a target focused approach and that will lead to speed. thanks again for saying hello, keep me posted on your journey. Hello Hello, and thanks for watching. Yes, Black Mamba 4.5" although it's closer to 6" with the included comp. Hey Lloyd, thanks for watching the channel. I use a pelican 1040 case for 10/22 magazines. they hold 10 magazines perfectly. front are even numbers and back are odd, I rotate between them every other stage. Just something I do. :) No bumpers on the factory magazines as they won't in the pelican with bumpers. It's a perfect fit with just the mags. I run a wiland rifle chassis, it's cut so that factory magazines can be grabbed without the need for bumpers in the situation that they don't fall free. Welcome to steel challenge, it is so much fun, and the people are amazing. try to make a tier 2 or higher match soon, the added pressures and prizes will really get your hooked.. Best, Karlos

@mindinbox

it's made by C-more, this one is an 8MOA dot in a railway aluminum frame. The larger dot size really helps, in my opinion, get the dot on the target quickly. This type of sight projects the dot from the rear so it doesn't have the starburst, or comet effect, its a perfect circle. Also helps when sun is super bright, it's little heavier and will drain a battery if you leave it on during a match. Great optics though, big clear window.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hey David, Or maybe I was just early :). If what Volquartsen said is correct, maybe that's why I shoot irons so poorly. In a joking mood today. To Answer your Question: I do use the Fire Sight from Williams in the rear, with the factory sight in the front. In total, I probably shot 6 matches with this setup, I don't shoot irons much. But I have hit master ranking, and have GMs stages with these sights, including an M on Outer Limits in this video.

Then you add the Ghost Ring Sight - easy to install once you swap the rear sight- looks like their out of stock on this part. www.tandemkross.com/Eagle-Eye-Rear-Peep-Sight-For-Williams-Fire-Sights_p_600.html Alternative: Looks like Taurus may have the Ghost Right in Stock: shoptaurus.com/shop-by-model/tandemkross-eagle-eye-rear-peep-sight-tx22 Both of those make up my current setup. Hi Karlos, I introduced myself to you at Area 4 in Corpus Christi last April. I just wanted to comment on your RFRO run on Smoke N Hope. Specifically, the 1.82 where they said the timer didn't pick up all of the shots. My opinion is that the timer only has to pick up the last shot, the first four shots don't matter as far as overall time goes. Did the RO think the last shot you fired was the one not picked up? I personally would have given you the 1.82, because theres no way to know which individual shot wasn't accounted for and as the shooter, you deserve the benefit of the doubt. Just my 2 cents.
@mindinbox
@mindinbox 5 ай бұрын
Hey Bud, I remember you & great to hear from you. That a great point you make - I am not sure on the official rules - but I believe the RO has the final say. If they say reshoot - only thing to do is reshoot. Will have to research this - I agree that by looking at the splits - the RO should be able to tell which shots where captured by the timer. Great idea for a new video soon.
@steve390gold
@steve390gold 29 күн бұрын
Ive encountered this as well. AMG timers have to be set up a specific way in order to pick up draw times umder 0.35s. If they arent, theyll stack the first time into the second shot. New ROs or ROs that arent used to people being fast on the draw will incorrectly assume the first shot was 0.55s - 0.85s when in reality it is the second shot. That said, I dont mind reshooting any string. More shooting = more fun and more practice! (But i agree seldom is the makeup run as good as the origional.) But Ive always found being upbeat and happy to oblige the ROs (and anyone really) pays dividends. Im also the guy usually making dad jokes between strings....LOL

I recognize that guy saying "stand by" in all those strings :) That damn timer was my bane for the day. Regarding the edge hit, remember that this is a visually scored sport. You might hear something, but if a hit is not immediately visible, we have to confirm it. This is why it's so important to paint the edges well between shooters - those are the "just barely got it" hits that make all the difference. Congrats on your RFPO win!

Colorado shoots an all day match - 4 stages in the morning, lunch break, then 4 in the afternoon, with some large squads. Arizona - will be a bit cooler, and the RO's travel with the squad through the match, so you get to know them along the way making for great time. Personally - its mainly an off year for me. So low end 1200.00, high end 1350. Most of the time I can pick up a used complete unit ~900-1K. I didn't include the barrel as I used this rifle stock to easily make grand master, but for this sport light front end is better. Another good option that I really like is TacSol X-Ring rifle, all around solid rifle these are currently what I shoot. Volquartsen also makes a great rifle. best of luck in your steel journey. I shot my first year with standard Ruger rifle in Magpul chassis with the C-more optic and did great. If you become like me and chase the GM ranking or better, then the lightweight gear makes it as fast as possible. Cheers - Karlos .

Nice work! I have a couple of points about officiating the stage. There should be no “warnings” about start position. If you’re not in the correct position, the RO should not start the string and simply wait for you to point the gun correctly. If you ask them why they haven’t said “are you ready” yet, I’d explain why. Similarly, if you start correctly, then start moving the gun off the start position before the beep, there’s a penalty to deal with that.

Howdy - Totally agree with you that's how RO's should operate but many of them are from USPSA, and don't know the exact rules. It messed with the shooters head, when the are told that not doing something right, just not starting the cadence would be ideal, let the shooter reset. On the starting before the beep, if you don't shoot the first target, instead stop and don't engage. I have seen most RO's go ahead and restart the shooter, even at tier two and up matches. Now if they continue and engage the first target, then it should be creeping and a 3 second penalty. Not sure exactly on the starting early rule, I will have to look that up. Thanks for the comment, and excellent points. Cheers, Karlos K

Great videos!! I just got to B Class and looking to improve. What spring are you using in the bolt for the high velocity ammo?
@mindinbox
@mindinbox 7 ай бұрын
Howdy Dan, Congrats on Making B Class - It's a key milestone, moving above the 65% of the par performance target. As to your question, I use the factory Volquartsen spring that comes with the pistol. Here is a link to the kit they offer - volquartsen.com/departments/mk_iv_parts/inventory_configurations/1086 . It comes with the heavy and lighter spring, but I just use the standard one. I shoot CCI Mini Mags 40g Round Nose only, never run any other ammo even during practice. So far around 4500 rounds through this setup and still use the same spring with no issues.

On improving, for me physical fitness, and dryfire helped me the most in my journey. Focus on Grip and Trigger pull practice so you don't bounce the dot when you pull the trigger. Target focus over Dot focused. Once yu have those basics, just start going faster :). Best Of luck and see you at the range one day soon ! - Karlos K.

Hello Don, - Glad you enjoy the videos - I slowed down on content creation, but hoping to start back up again in May. As to your question, the Check rest is made my a company called Wiland USA - I use their chassis, iron sights, and of course their check rest. Great stuff. here a link to the cheek rest component - just in case - wilandusa.com/chassis/mlcs-4-way-infinitely-adjustable-cheek-riser. Best of luck in your shooting journey.

Idk how you don't have more views on your content brother. As a new SCSA shooter, I love how you show every string, the breakdowns, the times, the Practiscore Comp app results, and the tips from a very good GM shooter. I havent found content that focuses on all 8 stages like you do. This is exactly what i needed. You are awesome man. Keep up the great work! I feel like i learned alot from your videos and certainly feel more confident with my next match coming up! Gotta work on that straight line. Subscribed 😊 i also shoot RFPO. Ive shot 4 matches and im already B class!

Thanks for the awesome message my man. Glad to hear to find the videos helpful. Congrats on the B ranking, that's awesome for 4 matches, you'll A and then Master soon. Best wishes on your Steel Challenge journey to GM. I looked up your matches, and noticed you shoot both CO and RFPO; both great divisions that are growing in the sport. Also noticed you have a great shooter to learn from locally, Tony W. He shoots mainly rifle, but he is really quick. Shot with Tony last year in MS, it's a match I plan to make this year too. Most of what I learned is by squadding with shooters faster than me. On the point you made about videos being what you need, I try to make them like your in my squad, watching along with the others. Then I go back and add the commentary so you understand more of the mental thought process around adjustments "micro changes" that I decide to make. Mistakes happen, the key is to shake them off, adjust, and put them in the past. The next string is whole new attempt. On the viewer ship comment, Most of the folks at Steel Challenge matches are there to get out of the house, not burn down the stages, it's an older crowd that just enjoy the shooting sports and this one is easy on the body. So not a ton of people looking to put forth the effort it takes to achieve GM times. Physical fitness, Eating Right before a match, reliable equipment, and great mental game are all required. My mental mantra is simple: even the best shooters in the world have to shoot the targets one target at a time. Thanks again for the comment, it provides the fuel & motivation to improve and make even better content in the future. Hope to meet you at a match sometime soon. As for me, Taking most of this year off, first job hunting which was successful, now starting a new job this Month; but I do have plans for newer content soon. Stay Tuned!

@mindinbox I look forward to it! Congratulations on the new job! Keep up the great work again. Tony is a pretty awesome shooter. He's a lot of fun to watch, as is yourself. I will try to squad with him eventually. I've been squatting with the match director to really learn the mechanics behind SC, and to learn the commands and procedures to become an RO one day myself. My wife also shoots RFPO, so the people we have been squadding with have been very helpful for her starting out as well. And yes, I look forward to meeting you on a national level one day! See you then!

Hey brother. Scores arent processed yet, but I got my first M for S&H (8.20, best string 1.90) and Showdown (8.74, best string 2.03) for RFPO! Watching your videos and dry firing is resulting in some serious improvement. I had a loose sight for a couple stages, pendulum and 5 to go that caused hurtful scores, but I fixed that and am anxious for this coming Saturday to make up and venture into A class overall! Thanks again my man. Your videos are seriously wizardry for me.

@@M3rcl55 In my best Mr Burn's from the Simpsons voice - Excellent !! Way to keep your head in the game even after optic issues. S&H is my favorite stage - 8.20 is fantastic. you'll be sub 8s next time. Showdown is one of the hardest stages IMO - really fast peak times and short quick transitions don't leave room for error. 2 Master stages in, sounds like you might just skip over A this weekend 😃. Thanks for keeping me in the loop, DRY FIRE is the key to success- keep putting in the work and results will continue to improve. Way to Go !

Karlos! Hope you've been well man! And hope the new job is going great! Im continuing to grow. Almost to M for RFPO. I've registered for the Area 8 Chapionship in July. Hosted by my hometown club! Can't wait. Question for you... Your Black Mamba. Is it 4.5" or 6"? I'm really considering one, but wanted to outshoot my TX22 Competition first. Surprisingly, the BM is only a couple ounces heavier than the TX22. I know you can add weighted grips to help, but does it make a difference? Ultimately, just wanted to know if the BM, to you, is totally worth the almost 2 grand they're selling for. And if I should go with the 4.5 or 6" barrel. Thanks again brother. Keep kicking ass out there!

Thanks for the video Karlos. Question, I couldn't help but notice your low ready stance. In your opinion, does what I see here meet the requirement for low ready? I ask only because I get a lot of conflicting feedback on this. I look forward to your reply...
@mindinbox
@mindinbox 7 ай бұрын
Short Answer - It looks passably good to me. If you watch this video from the World's Speed Shoot 2023, multiple RO's on each stage, you notice low ready from the third person camera point of view as the same height, as Arizona; but when it switches to first person, the rifle is where is needs to be: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHzaZ4Vogd6MmrM - start at the 3:58s mark. -Long Answer - Had to watch the Arizona video to double check, from what I remember at this match, the low ready indicators were a bit low. The Rule book states, there will be an aiming point (marker, cone, flag,or sign) centered downrange directly in front of each shooting box 10’ away and a maximum of 2ft high. As a practiced shooter, I practice / work on setting up my low ready at the same height all the time, If the RO says its too high, then I will adjust downwards, but I setup at the same height as much as possible, usually that is within basketball sized area on top of the 2 foot indicator. In this video, based on the amount of movement up and down it seems that I didn't have a lot of lift and therefore was too high at low ready; but it's hard to tell from a zoomed in camera / and the angle. Again based on the video linked above in this comment with the first person point of views, the low ready position meets the rules expectations. However, it's up the RO to determine where they believe low ready as they are in charge of the stage. Great question - Low Ready is hard to get right, as it varies by a person height, I'm 5.8", so I don't have to tilt as much as someone that is 6'2" or taller. My approach is to be as consistent as possible with low ready every time, I focus on practicing this with dryfire, achieving the exact same low ready position for every stage. If the RO says it's too high, then I adjust a bit lower. Thank them for helping me get better, and roll with it. As a GM shooter those few inches don't really add anytime to my strings, but I also don't want to move more than I have too. Now let's get to the range to ring some steel! Cheers Karlos

Karlos, what is the total weight of this gun without mags?
@mindinbox
@mindinbox 7 ай бұрын
The rifle in the video comes in just under 4lbs 4 ounces. I don't use this rifle anymore. - Swapped over to both TacSol X-Ring rifles for irons and optics. My irons gun in 3 lbs 8 ounces using Wiland Chassis, 8.8 ounce wiland barrel and TacSol Receiver. My Open Rifle is also a TacSol but with a heavier barrel 12 ounces, a heavy C-More Aluminum optics at 8 ounces, so it comes in around 4lbs 8 ounces. I do prefer the lighter barrel in as it makes transition adjustments easier. However, I am really used to the C-More Railway Optics which adds weight too.

Left side charging and the thing and light carbon fiber tubes (TOOB, haha) are huge improvements. I just wish we could combine that with the ease of cleaning from the Fletcher 11/22 and the Manticore X magazine release.

You said Toob - lol. Good One. To be honest, I never tried the fletcher 11/22 design, removable top I believe. I gotten so used to disassembly & cleaning the tacsol & switchbolt rifles that I can do it in less than 15 minutes, including firing pin removal, extractor cleaning, and even taking down the trigger assembly halfway. I am currently all in on tactical solutions X-Ring rifles with the dual spring bolt recoil design & custom firing pin. Just always goes bang, which matters more than the cleaning time. Still I can get it sparkling in less than 15 minutes with 3 allen wrenches and a paperclip. Kidd Triggers for me 100%, with volquartsen a close second. Never tried the Manticore triggers, but I am not a big fan of Tandemkross triggers or internals. I do use their bags and grips though!. Thanks for watching - I have been on break, but should be back at central Texas Matches starting in June, Hope to see you at the Range!

@@TonyDSG In the beginning, just go have fun. Make sure your equipment works, figure out what gear you may need. Have a basic shooting order planned out and just shoot each stage one target at a time. If you get 4 good runs, then push the 5th string just a little faster. Practice always makes getting better way faster. Enjoy!
