I went into the book expecting MLM because I assumed Theo and Kit were both men.. felt a little baited 😭

I also DNF’d about 40% thru, but I never got the impression that Theo was trans identifying. I may have missed some cues, but I received them both as cis-bi characters from the start

This is my first real book ever and i just finished reading. Took me 2 days to get through it. Since I've never read anything before I'm not sure how to feel about this book. It would've been nice if there was a distinction between the what was happening in the past and the present i don't know if that would've given the plot away but yeah.

I really really don't understand how this book is so hyped. It's some of the most unbelievable dialogue, characters and plot I've ever come across. The twist was predictable and the reason for her silence was not a reason. Absolutely terrible.

I’ve struggled with every Casey McQuiston book I read, including RW&RB and tbh, I skipped this one all together because the plot sounded like the antithesis of a good time for me. I’d highly recommend Alison Cochrun’s romances - she also writes queer romances, but I like her emotional build up and characters a lot more.

unfortunately i find that alison cochrun also couldn't write their way out of a wet paper bag and their novel kiss her once for me solidify that i should stay very far away from their work as i have yet to have a good experience that i wan trying to recapture. happy that others have been having a good time with their books tho

It never fails to amuse me that fans forget about what Rhysand did in Book 1. All that creepy assault is pushed to the side and he becomes a feminist love interest all of a sudden. The romanticization of abusive relationships made me dnf this series.

Im not a romance girlie myself, but i feel seen when you were talking about sapphic romance novels; i feel like as a sapphic reader, my standards for what i want in a sapphic romance novel are rarely met 🤷‍♀️ I also was so entertained by your rant on the superbloom, that does sound like a nightmare 😂😂😂🦋

I read the Silent Patient first, which I enjoyed enough to read the Maidens. Silent Patient was quite slow in a lot of parts and the whole conclusion could have been reached more efficiently without as much boring (unnecessary imo) character introspection. The only reason I had a net positive experience was because I had not expected the end, so I give credit to Michaelides for setting up the story to make me question Alicia’s guilt and then catch me off guard at the unmasking that <<<spoiler>>> confirms it was her after all, but with Theo’s major involvement also confirmed. I guess bc I was only anticipating Theo being a creep in the current timeline (like yeah why tf are you obsessed with her case, and snaking your way into being her therapist?) and suspected one of Alicia’s people to be the stalker she had mentioned, I was surprised at the revelation that Theo had been the creep stalking her before she murdered her husband after all. If I had not read this book via audiobook where I could zone out for a lot of the boring parts, I probably would have DNF’d it. The Maidens on the other hand I did almost DNF and I was listening to the audiobook. Like you said, same types of characters and similar themes and set up, equally unthrilling as the Silent Patient with an equally “twisted” end - except the only reason it felt like a “twist” was bc of the sheer shock value to learn Sebastian was a pedophile and that he was abusing Zoe. Worst about that though is that there were no clues to the reader for us to ever have guessed it ourselves (unless I missed them lol, wasn’t always paying attention), whereas with the Silent Patient did lay out enough info throughout for us to have guessed the conclusion. Any good mystery writer should know that they have to leave a proper trail, however disguised, for the reader, and Michaelides did not in the Maidens.

I completely disagree with you. This is not a book about war. This is a romance book about Feyre's relationship with Rhys and Tamlin and it does in fact tie into the previous book. And the whole comparison with throne of glass is stupid, that series was literally carried by dues ex machinas in the last book, imo EoS is the best ToG book, and it does end pretty similar to acomaf, except that here Feyre actually goes semi on her own will to help in the war. The mating bond in throne of glass is so bad, its just not built up correctly, here it actually makes sense. Mating in acotar makes sense since most mates are actually human, and usually arent met.

While reading it, I kept seeing parallels with ACOMAF. We had an Acheron sister, recently turned fae dealing with trauma. Along their journey, they train physically and/or magically, go on quests, fall in love with their mate, get a found family and come to the conclusion that they’re looking forward to life at the end of the book.

Imma be honest, i finished the book 5 minutes ago and i did not enjoy it at all. The storyline was weird, all the travel and food details did nothing for me and there was so little character growth. The supporting characters were so minimal. Someone said that if you take the food and scenery away you would be left with like 20% of the story. I hoped for a RW&RB kinda book but that was not it. Im honestly proud i got myself to finish it cus damn

Bree having no meaningful relationships with black people is something that grated me the entire book. I thought from the first book, she would really bond with the root community by book 2. But no, Tracy uses them as a tool for the round table. And then the first time she introduces a black man, he’s a literal demon? Pissed me right on off.
@rahmouchatanko
@rahmouchatanko Ай бұрын
Yessss, book 1 shows how lonely her mother, grandmother, etc were because of the deal and thematically it just made sense to me that Bree would slowly integrate herself back into the root community so she could have the support that her ancestors never had. Every other black person in the book feels like they're her fairy godparents or something. They're not their own people, they're just there to emphasize black trauma and be a mentor to Bree. It pisses me off so bad

I know I'm two years late but just finished this for a bookclub and needed to find someone that agreed with my issues with the entirety of the plot and writing as a whole. I was angered further when I looked into the story of Alcestis and they're NOT the same. I wanted so much to like it and couldn't. The premise was cool and it was terribly executed. I also had a copy of the book that included bookclub questions to ask AND the author answers himself. The CONTEMPT he has for those with mental health issues bleeds into his responses and into his writing of patients as characters. He claims he worked in a similar facility... but like a what, a janitor???

Part 5, chapter 3, page 334 to 336. "Perhaps I was wrong. Perhaps some of us are simply born evil (talking about himself); and despite our best efforts we remain that way" -Theo, the delusional drug addict psycho who thought that a world famous, crazy rich celebrity would create a fake account named BADBOY22, se×t with his nobody wife, and then hook up with her in a damn *Forrest*😂. The wife, who showed nothing but care and love to him from the start. The wife, who showed no straightforward sign of infidelity besides during his drugged hallucinations at night time. No hints or clues found during daytime when theo is sober. Notice how he started imagining his wife's infidelity only after he started doing drugs again. The years before that, there was no suspicion.. they lived a happy married life for years before that one night he did drugs again and 'saw' the emails. Theo at one point, mentiones that he somewhat liked that feeling he got when he saw(hallucinated) her cheat. Hence, started imagining more and more twisted hallucinations. Because he somewhat LIKED being cu*ked. I don't understand why people do not get this point.. the hints are given by the author all over the book. Obviously he would not write *SHE DID NOT CHEAT* in bold letters, it's a 'suspense novel' after all. The reader is not supposed to believe everything that is written by the narrator, because the narrator is clearly unreliable.

I just got into the acotar world, and let me say this it has been a RIDE. I absolutely loved the last book and the love I have for Nesta, Gwyn, Emerie and the House of Wind is undescribable!! Not everyone is going to understand Nesta and that’s okay. This book showed us who Nesta really is and what she was going through and I think it was something that was done beautifully!! And my man Cassian, I love that he never gave up on my girl Nesta!!🫶🏽😩

What makes this book “adult” isn’t sx scenes but the volume and complexity of plot lines. Although Lin’s people could be an allegory to Jewish societies, they could also be an allegory to the Romani, or the catholic in early Rome. I urge those who find it convoluted to read more adult fantasy (not romantasy) and get familiar with holding multiple plot lines in their mind. That’s the draw of the book, not its flaw. That there is no true one love for the leads. No clear cut good and evil. On magic: the majority of sc, magic is not center stage. Instead it is the machinations of the city and castle court.

Oh, but the thing is you wait a year & buy the paperbacks. That way, you wait a year before buying any book, so there is no hype, you only buy books that are 19,7cm high so they fit on the Billy bookshelf with 8 shelves to save space, in the process you save so much money. Any major publishing house, you wait a year, but not for indie press of course. I've never paid more than 10€ for a Cassandra Clare's book.
