Bob, thanks for this video! Could the yellow wire go to the alternator wire that turns off the BAT dashboard light?

This is great thanks for showing this. I did this to my Chevy LUV with a small block stuffed under the hood and no room for a power steering pump. Luckily an 86 Isuzu Trooper steering box bolts directly in and then used this same Mini Cooper pump to make it all work.

Thanks for the video! On my pump there was a Green/white and a light green, no yellow. I hooked the light green to the starter solenoid lug that was energized when starting and that worked great. Before I found your video I hooked the two wires together and it took 5 seconds or so for the pump to go to full speed which wasn't ideal. Also we need more videos of this truck! Such a cool idea with the rear engine supercharged 4 cylinder. Definitely unique.

You could run an additional relay or a diode off your starter wire switch, to pulse the pump's wire, and avoid needing a separate switch. That way it's practically automatic. The mystery wire could be for vss to adjust assistance or vehicle speed or maybe a can bus comm wire. Also, have you measured the current draw?

Bob, thanks for publishing this video! This was exactly the problem I was trying to solve, and you laid it out beautifully. I had the same problem and suspected I should get diodes involved, but now I don't have to overtax the paltry few brain cells I've devoted to understanding electronics. Hidden gems like this are what make KZbin great. I was curious about your vehicle, and found your power steering pump video. Awesome originality in the powertrain layout! Scratching my head trying to figure out why you don't have more followers. You're a perfect example of how KZbin rewards volume over quality, I guess. Anyway, you now have one more subscriber. I encourage you to do another video revealing more details about your pickup.

I'm guessing in the original factory set-up , the pump is only turned on when needed (ie turning). But in this set-up, it is running continuously.

No. Turning the pump on is controlled by a gate in a latch circuit. Power starts the pump but removing power doesn't turn it off. Resetting the circuit by turning the key off kills power to the pump.

This really helped me a lot. Here is more information for others. If looking into the plug, there are three pins. A left pin, a right pin and a lower middle pin. The left pin is the 12v constant on. The middle lower pin is the momentary start. The right is optional.

How much does this pump weigh? The MR2 pumps are ~10lbs, wondering if this is lighter, because it looks smaller.

So I have collected all of the parts, and I have everything hooked up, but I am having trouble with my pump kicking off whenever I steer all the way, either right or left. I have to "Pulse" the pump to get it to start again. Has anyone else tried the Mini cooper pump on a steering box, and has anyone else encountered this problem.

I watched this video twelve times, and I still can't t see where he says what the violet and white wire is for. Also, are both the larger white and red wires positive, or is one positive and one negative?
@bobpelikan
@bobpelikan 6 жыл бұрын
Cory Ashe The big red one is B+, the big white one is -, the violet/white one is not used, the green/white is ignition, and the yellow one gets pulsed after the ignition is on to start the pump. Hope this helps.

great setup! did you use Pentosin fluid or regular power steering fluid?
@coryashe5195
@coryashe5195 4 жыл бұрын
After using the mini cooper electric pump for a while, I ended up draining the reservoir to relocate it, and I used power steering fluid because that's what I had available. I immediately noticed a huge draw on my electrical system, and steering became intermittent under load. I reasearched which auto-trans fluid is actually specified for this pump, and found Pentosin fluid. After changing out the old fluid, Everything seems to be back in Line.

@@coryashe5195 That's very interesting as I bought a GM style power steering pump for my car and I couldn't get it to run properly. It ran at full power the whole time and I never discovered why but this could be the reason. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like the bolt is rusted in the bushing spacer, pretty typical from what I grok, happened with my 06 cobalt. I used a pickling fork, worked like a charm.
