As a lifelong Iowan, I know that the Sullivan Brothers are held in the highest regard. Interestingly enough, one of the local Waterloo radio stations plays this song fairly regularly...

For the ones who wants to know what this song mean here you go. Sullivan is a song made by caroline's spine. The song is about 5 brothers from Waterloo, Iowa who heard about the disaster on pearl harbor. WWII started and all 5 brother joined. So beacause of that 5 blue stars was put on the window. When the war ended we won of course, but like every war someone dies. And sadly all 5 brothers died. So beacause of that the blue stars will be changed to gold.

While listening about Pearl Harbor on the radio, the dad looks at his 5 sons and says: "Army or Navy?" You'll never see that these days. They were real men back then.

I don't think this song is in keeping with the gravity of the situation. It's not the lyrics, it's the music.

@jrlomy2k The Sullivan Family did not find out their sons were killed as was portrayed in the movie...not at first. Mrs. Sullivan initially heard of her boys' deaths as rumors which were floating around Waterloo; as others who served knew of the story who lived in the area had told their families. It wasn't until Mrs. Sullivan wrote to the war department several times, and finally received a letter from. Pres. Roosevelt that she had gotten a confirmation.

Lastly, for those who haven't seen the movie, they did not just 'up and enlist' then and there. In real life, a couple of the brothers had already had military experience by the time WWII came around. The others later enlisted and went to basic long before they all were put on the USS Juneau. There were other sets of brothers who were also killed, some had six brothers. But for whatever reason the Sullivan family was good "PR" for the government to use as advertisement to get men to enlist.

However, there were only a few dozen who managed to get off the ship and onto life rafts. Unfortunately, they were in shark infested waters, with no food or supplies. Dehydration and illness overtook them (all being covered with oil and debris from the explosion), many including George became insane and jumped into the water, believing they could swim to shore. This is documented in a publication called "Left to Die"; written by Jimmy Sullivan, the son of the youngest Sullivan brother, Albert

I grew up watching this movie and knowing the story of the Fighting Sullivans. My father and two uncles who served in Vietnam were separated and put into different tours because of the Sullivan Law. I do believe this law has been repealed and brothers can again serve together. However, if it is of interest to anyone here, do more research on the family as the movie was greatly 'hollywood" influenced. George HAD originally been one of the last few survivors...

war has the worst price to pay for some the loss of a friend or family member...for others...they will never be the same again, they go to fight only to live through a nightmare.
