@elisevanheerden2447 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! On the Algonquin website, there's a PDF you can download that talks about the portfolio requirements (www.algonquincollege.com/mediaanddesign/program/animation/portfolio/) I don't know if they allow digital or not for that as it never specifically says, but all the examples they show in the PDF are traditional, and most people I know in the program did it traditionally... but if you really want to do it digitally and are worried they won't like it I'd suggest reaching out to one of the coordinators, (contact info at the bottom of the PDF) and just ask for clarification. Paul West was one of my first-year profs and he's super nice so maybe try reaching out to him! Best of Luck!

Im applying for this at Algonquin and i'd like to clear a few doubts. Do we have an examiner watch us do these tasks? if so will he be there throughout all the tasks? like with the hand models, aptitude and wendy parts? or do we have to do them seperately?

Thank you so much for this video Elise! I'm applying for this program at Algonquin this year and I find this very useful. Also, I noticed that you included an animation piece in your personal work, how did you managed to do that? I mean, I understand that the portfolio has to be in PDF format, but I can't figure out how to include some of my own animations as GIF :((( Could you tell me how did you included it?
@elisevanheerden2447 Жыл бұрын
Im so glad this was able to help you! I remember being very stressed about trying to make my animation work with the PDF format, and honestly, maybe there is a way but I just ended up submitting two versions of my portfolio and added a note saying that I know they requested a PDF portfolio file, but that I had an animation that didn't work with that file type. I don't know if they actually looked at the other version of my portfolio that had the animation in it, or if my PDF-sans-animation one was strong enough to get me in on its own... but I do know that I didn't seem to get docked any marks or disqualified for sending two versions! Good luck!!

Seeing you get rejected multiple times have made me a lot more at ease because I have been in a panic that I won't go to uni straight from college but I really don't think I am ready yet and also I don't think I will get the grades. I have procrastinated a lot on the more technical stuff but I have slowly started to try to do more technical learning. I desided to go back to the basics I picked up some tutorials that where helpful when I started out and just experimenting out of my comfort zone. Even with my animation I had never done rigged animation before a couple months ago but recently because of how tight my deadline is for an assignment for my graffics I desided that I would try to do some rigged animation loops to save time and I think they looked pretty good.

Im glad this helped ease some of your worries! I personally didn't know how to animate digitally AT ALL so thats why I went traditional, so if you have any knowledge about that, good on you! Good luck with your technical skills and upcoming portfolios!

great portfolio elise!! loved how you explained everything clearly. I hope youre having a great time in college:) i have few ques if you dont mind- I was wandering what algonquins employment rate is? as a international student im worried if ill actually able to secure a job in time. Also except Sheridan almost every college provides ontario advanced college diploma in animation rather than bachelors. does that affect employmnet in any way?
@elisevanheerden24472 жыл бұрын
Hello!! Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed my video! To answer your questions: Algonquin has a crazy high hiring rate out of third year, it's part of the reason I was so happy to go there! I believe it fluctuates around 90% - 98% of students being hired directly out of third year! One of my profs said that one year they even had a 100% hiring rate! (Here's a link I found to back me up lol: www.algonquincollege.com/news/2020/05/01/animation-program-ranked-sixth-best-in-the-world/ ) Ottawa has a large animation industry and they have very good relations with the college (almost all my profs are still working at the studious around here, and some are even the recruiting officers for studios!) I'm only in my second year so I can't add any personal hiring experience, but I'm feeling hopeful about my odds next year! Okay, so for the diploma thing... Everyone I've talked to in the industry has said that diplomas don't matter in animation. Literally all they will look at is your portfolio, so some people don't even go to school and still thrive because their skills are good enough without formal training. Algonquin does offer a 4th year in Ireland in which you can earn a diploma if you are interested in that! (lit.ie/ there's the Limerick University website... They did a presentation over zoom to us in my first year and you'll learn more about them then!) Hope this helps! Good luck with all your portfolio work!

Hello! There are a couple other animation schools in Canada that I'm aware of... this website offers some insight into Canadian animation colleges as a place for you to start looking (lovefunart.ca/blogs/insight/top-10-animation-schools-in-canada). If you are looking to improve your skills before attempting to apply anywhere, this link is for a one-year portfolio preparation course in Toronto that I have heard is highly effective, though I haven't personally done it so idk (www.animationportfolioworkshop.com/) There is also a one-year portfolio prep/ pre animation course here at Algonquin that I have friends in, and they have all seen a massive improvement in their work, and most of them are now accepted into the main Animation program for next year (www.algonquincollege.com/mediaanddesign/program/drawing-foundations-for-animation-and-illustration/). I will also say though that taking a preparation course is absolutely not mandatory or necessary... I think it can just help people improve very very quickly and give you a better idea if this career path is for you! Hope this helps, and good luck with your art journey!

Hello! I was lucky enough to do an in-person life drawing class, and so I had a real live model to work from, but I used a website called "Line of Action" (line-of-action.com/) to practice at home! Another one is a youtube channel called Croquis Cafe that my life drawing class this year has used a couple times, and it's good bc it's a video of the model, instead of just a photograph! It's absolutely not necessary to attend any portfolio classes!! There are some very extensive, expensive programs that you can do (which I did not), but at the end of the day, the schools don't know if you did classes or not, they just see your work!

Woah. Admissions for these Animation courses seem ridiculously strict. Especially Sheridan. A score based system and 89% to be accepted? That just seems unreasonable. I actually applied for the Graphic Design Advanced Diploma at Seneca a few weeks ago and got accepted but it did not feel anywhere near as challenging as the requirements for Animation. (even though that program is also deemed "highly competitive")
@elisevanheerden24472 жыл бұрын
Honestly yeah, these programs are way more competitive than people realize... but with schools like Sheridan that have such high reputations they can afford to be super picky! For Canadian students to get in it was 89% but for international students, it was something like 94%!!! Good luck with your future schooling!

@elisevanheerden24472 жыл бұрын
For Algonquin, the PDF they have on their website is the final requirement... I applied to the school first and then they would send me email reminders that I had to submit the portfolio, with the same PDF document with the instructions from the website attached. (So basically the answer is yes, the instructional PDF on their website is the one you use!) I hope that makes sense, and I wish you luck on your portfolio!!!

Like u can but u have to attach a link and thn the panel will click on it and go to a certain website. I don't wanna trouble the panel. What should I do, should I make a slideshow video showing all my drawings and animation or should I send thm a pdf having links to my animation videos
@elisevanheerden24473 жыл бұрын
Not silly at all!! I actually really struggled with this like the day before and was super stressed about it! I ended up sending them two copies and wrote this in the email that I send both copies in: "Note: I have attached two copies of my portfolio only because I have an embedded animation clip and could not get it to play in the requested PDF format… however, I know you requested to receive a PDF, so I attached it as well. Hopefully, you will be able to view the EPUB version and watch the animation, but if not, the PDF is the exact same (minus a working video file)." They never said anything about it but I did get in so ig they either didn't care about the file type that much, or they viewed the PDF and it was strong enough even without the animation!! Hope this helps! Good luck!!!
