This is good. One of the things I did to teach canoeing to young men in the Boy Scouts was to put them in canoes. Their first exercise was to spend 10 minutes on draw stroke and 10 minutes on pry stroke. Here they learned very quickly how the canoe behaves with these strokes. When it came to learning to paddle the canoe forward, I got them into a canoe all by themselves to paddle the canoe straight. This way they couldn't blame someone else for the canoe not going where it was supposed to go.

One way to remember which shoulder is that you want to make a head sandwhich- your head is between the shore line and the rope.

Jeff - Your demonstration is very good and I love it. Because you are in a whitewater canoe it does a good job emphasizing results. However for people who are new to canoeing, they probably will need to grasp the difference between solo white water canoes (which your show) and solo "other canoes". If they are paddling anything other than a whitewater canoe they will not get the same results you demonstrated and may think their mistakes make no difference to them.

Great comment Paul and thanks for point this out. I specifically used this boat for this demonstration because it shows this so dramatically. You won't see this in a straight keeled both unless it is heeled way over.

Interesting to see you use the River-J / gooney for correction rather than a J. Although I guess that may be preferential in moving water?

Excellent demonstration as always. It really helps to see how the different strokes affect the canoe

what the name of that canoe ? very cool look and what lake is this ? Looks like one off the 15 highway

The canoe is a 20/20 from Millbrook Boats. Its only 29 lbs so it really fun to paddle. The lake is Soda Lake in Colorado.

Best film angles I’ve seen! I use the goonie (sp) stroke and I’m trying to figure out the J stroke and most videos don’t show what the blade is specifically doing, yours does! Thank you!

Under the upstream arm! I used it today in browns. Combined with that dynamic belay when possible really reduces how much stain is placed on the swimmer

Thanks again, I am good with the J stroke and use it all the time like you said. Haven't tried the pitch Stroke (or seen it before) Will try it out first chance I get. Thanks for the super clear instruction as always! Cheers James

For good examples of what I refer to as the pitch, look at sprint canoe or slalom C-1 racers. What I was taught as the pitch, racers just call it a J. I've also heard it called a racing J. Enjoy!

Awesome work thank you! I have watched a load of videos on strokes and correction and not one has mentioned the blade angle for rudder control. Great explanation and clear demonstration. Will be trying it out in a day or 2. Thank you 😊

Let me know how it goes when you try it.

Just got back from the canoeing. It was really windy and we all went out tandem. I was in the stern and the rudder worked great to keep us on track. Makes a big difference rotating the T grip and chaging the angle. It's easy to remember as you kind of point thumb on the T grip the direction you need to turn. Thanks for the video i am really glad I saw it 😊.

Sculling draw, awesome. Sculling Pry = the close up of the blade on the carpet is the correct method, using the nonpower face for both slicing forward and back. However on the other views, careful, we don't change to power face when doing the sculling pry ; ) ; )

Thanks for the close look and feedback. One of the reasons I started this video project was to get feedback and making sure descriptions and demos were spot on. As soon as I can get some footage, I'll revise this. I'm also looking forward to getting on the water this weekend and explore using both faces. I scull a lot, so your comment gives me something to explore! I'd also appreciate your close look at my other videos and would welcome feedback or other descriptions you might have for describing and teaching.
