Cheap and nasty, they have had to scrap some of the first batch about 3 or 4 locos about 12years old, such a shame

yes i guess at the time we were not to know how bad they really were, asbestos and bad fans flying apart. The new batches were a little improvement but hopefully the new replacements work much better from the start.

The abandonment of passengher services beyond Swanson is explained and analysed in André Brett's book ' Can't Get There From Here' (2021). He says the Waitakere tunnel is 250m long, which is short by most standards. This makes it strange that KiwiRail and AT did not get together to enlarge it (assuming that the first choice solution, lowering the track using concrete slab-track does not provide enough clearance for the 25kV overhead wire). Except in the tunnel, some double-tracking is desirable to enable a train every 30 mins from Waitakere to Britomart. Once the city centre underground section is open, there will be more of the city centre accessible by train, the trains from the west will be routed that way, and the potential patronage from Waitakere and Huapai will be larger. As things stand, the new cross-city-centre line will open in 2025, be very popular, and the call for trains to run to Waitakere and Huapai will return. Much better if the work to enlarge the tunnel had been done by now. Compared to the major cost being incurred now in downtrown Auckland, the enlargement of the tunnwel would be minor expenditure.
