This was 3-D flying back in the day . When you took your heli to fly and bring it back home in one peace . This did not happen vary much back then . If everything was right on the Morley they flew great .

Oh wow, what a flash back indeed. I have been flying R/C helis from 1986, and it was cool to see the old tech from way back when. I remember having that old stuff when I first started!!

Crazy! Nothing was done for the security of the visitors. No fence between the airfield and the Visitor area. Good, that these times are past.

Absolutely fantastic! This was filmed about 5 years before I got in the hobby. My first RC aircraft was a helicopter, a Horizon. Were they using gyros on the tail in those days? Sometimes it seemed like they were and others I was not so sure. Either way, their control is impressive for the time. I learned to hover without a gyro for the first four months or so. I didn't know they existed yet. It was a challenge to say the least. It taught me how to set the tail and mechanically desensitize the tail controls as that was the only way to do it. My radio didn't have dual rates, let along things like expo. Once I finally did install a gyro on the tail, I discovered I could actually hover the model. It was a wonderful time.

3:42 That's John Griffith from Slough Radio Control flying the BO-105 (Schluter Heli-Boy with 4-rotor head) and Nigel. I used to fly with John at Eton College playing fields in 1980-81 when I was a young 16 years of age! John used to drive a Corvette Stingray and strap whatever Kalt helicopter he was flying that day to the luggage rack on the rear (if I remember correctly). I recall his first (successful) inverted helicopter flight. I used to love the Kalt Autogyro he had decked out as Little Nellie from Bond complete with firing rockets. Good days. I can't believe it was 40 years ago.

Wow this is old as I am I was born in 1977 and even back then over 40 years ago you can see that these are see helicopters was very advanced for their time some of them employed collective pitch which was basically unheard of

Wrong guys, Kavan actually made a gyro in the early 70s. I know, i had one. But yes, it's true, these 1970s helis were very difficult to fly.

Just to mention, this was shot on 16mm film for a magazine programme - something like Nationwide?? You can see the presenter at 8.05 in. Does anyone know who he is?
@marcusdoling76983 жыл бұрын
I think the presenter could be David Pratt who appeared in a Garden railway TV show a some years ago

Thanks for uploading this. Was this filmed on video or film? Looks like video to me. I bet those heli's were pigs to fly
@rotarywing59228 жыл бұрын
Bit of a late reply but this was definitely 16mm film shot using a Arri BL, most likely. It might look like video as I only had a VHS copy of it, so the colour smearing looks a bit video-ish.

Gotta love the shiny jackets, the mustaches and the hair cuts... Thank you for posting this great video, I have been in this hobby for about 5 years and this is a great hindsight view at when this hobby still was in its early years.
