Using an adjustable spanner is a very good way of damaging the cam chain tensioner nut.

Hope you've got notifications on man, we loved these videos. Honestly the best shot videos taking apart the SR. I was hoping you had a part 4 of going through the bottom end and reassembling as I'm about to dig in to mine. Couple months ago while riding my exhaust tappet nut came loose, causing stuff to flap wildly. By the time could pull over away from traffic... Well, I knew it wasn't good. Both camshaft bearings exploded from what I figured was the vibration+ them being older than I thought. Exciting. Cheers dude, if you ever shoot more videos of this, people will watch it for generations. Great teachings.

Thanks for your video! I am looking into my clutch issues as I have no lever freeplay. I thought it wouldn't be right that the inner clutch boss teeth don't line up flush with the axle teeth but just noticed it's the same on yours! I was thinking to remove the washer behind the clutch boss but not sure if that's a great idea.. If you have any suggestions that'd be appreciated!

With the engine running, the indicator for cam chain does not move in/out the slightest bit like I've seen it should. although flush with the big locknut and bike runs ok so far but still bit of a rattly sound from engine. Any ideas?

Hi. At 3.27 what is that nut with the screw in the middle of it on crankcase? Also, can i attach numerous extra electric accessories such as new headlights ir other things - can the alternator handle the extra load? Thanks
@Kristian-us7wu
@Kristian-us7wu 2 жыл бұрын
The large nut with a screw in the middle is for adjusting the clutch arm. Putting on extra lights shouldnt be a problem as long as you still run a battery.
@pmacc3557
@pmacc3557 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kristian-us7wu mine has (to the best of my knowledge) no battery as if it cuts out - i have no electrical power until it restarts - which can be dangerous as one nite it cut out and i was left in darkness whilst kicking to restart. this nut with little screw - not sure how it adjusts the clutch arm as for me its basically a blank in side of crank case...

Greetings from the very south of Germany. Riding a 1980 XT500 I really enjoyed your videos on the engine restauration and looking forward to seeing continuous ones 😊 I can understand that this takes time and if you are busy with work is hard to do. Nevertheless I can't wait to see you continuing your work on the engine. Have a good time up there in Sweden!

Greetings friend, thanks for your kind words! Its very encouraging to get messages like yours. The plan is to buy a workshop press as soon as I have time and money. I need that to remove the crankshaft. With the filming and editing its time consuming but alot of fun so more will come! Meanwhile I hope you get some great spring drives with that XT500 of yours! Take care!

So you only have the motor not a bike ? I have a 1978 SR500 I've fitted a simpler 36mm Mikuni carburettor I got off eBay from the US it went straight on and runs great with only some adaption to the throttle cable and the tubing to the air cleaner and a different "non vacuum" fuel tap, you can use the original fuel tap if you use a later type of manifold that has a vacuum tube or drill through the front end of the carburettor and install your own vacuum tube As for identifying its year it might be hard to do without its numbers The magnetos have had a lot of changes over time maybe that could help identify it's year If you had the whole bike the 78s and 79s had mag wheels for "tubed" tyres and front and rear disc brakes I'm pretty sure they went to "tubeless" tyres on the 1980 models with mag wheels with a front disc brake and a rear drum brakes

I have a frame and a gas tank wich were included when I bought the engine. The gas tank isnt from a sr500 but the frame should be from the same bike as the engine. Maybe i can get the year from the frame numbers 🤔 I'll probebly do the same as you and fit a aftermarket carburettor. 👍

Both of my SR500's had a number on the engine and the frame on the steering head. Mine were both 1978s and as it seems to me is that the engine is on the noisy side just how they are. I think that a synthetic oil would help quiet the engine down. Maybe something like the Mobil 1 motorcycle oil for a Harley Davidson. The best of luck with your rebuild.
