Beautiful! Brilliantly done. That you made that from scratch is even more commendable!

You can create your own scratch building plans by buying a set of plans from a smaller boat, such as Elsie or Gertrude Theabaud, on line and do a little scaling math. You need these views: body plan with half breadths, deck plan, and the sail plan. Take what you have to the office store and have them enlarged to the desired scale; I've used 1/4" to the foot. You can find accurately printed plates with all the requirements by Skeene or Chappelle. I've taken a plan of Elsie from a bound book and used the drawing and table of offsets (measurements) to build a 16 foot replica (yes, that big). Scratch building in the larger scales I believe is easier that the itty bitty scales; for one thing, the tools in an ordinary shop give you a better start. There are used Model Shipways plans available online that have details from the work of Chappelle. If you are stuck on the idea of cutting a page out of one of your prized books, just pick up a used copy online and an Exacto knife. To get a really good idea of the whole process in full scale, binge watch Leo Goolding's KZbin series on rebuilding the Tally Ho, paying particular attention to the vids on design and rigging. Check it out.

Beautiful, both the concept as well as the appearance. May I ask if this would be a so called "J-Boat"?. Talking about spirit, I wonder if there was Bourbon or Gin to be offered around those elegant decks. Now take the helm and fair winds Ladies and Lads.

No, it is not a J class yacht . This a Newfoundland schooner . a fishing boat of about the 1890's or 1920's . J class yachts were developed from this hull shape and raced in the 1930's for the America cup.

@@welshpete12 Thankyou Captain WP. I stumbled over a documentary on 'American Schooners' in the meantime to learn more about these fascinating designs. Seeing them in full fly is the most exhilarating analogy of the expression 'Fast & Bonnie' I happen to know. And to having learned from you that the most exclusive form of raceyacht was developed from a 'work horse' compliments that conception with plenty food for phantasie. :)

What a beautiful build -- just fantastic work. Thanks for sharing. Btw, you have her tack descriptors reversed in the video. At 4:07 she is on a starboard tack and at 4:35 she is on a port tack (wind coming from port).

At present I am building and repairing sailing dinghies but I built models, up to 6ft, as a teenager. I am building a free sailer sandwich style yacht at present, a rehearsal I suppose for when increasing age will no longer allow me to build full size craft. Ironic really, I found I could paddle the 6ft topsail schooner hull, (FG) and my next boat was a 16ft ply pirogue. Regressing to a second childhood?
