Old school like John Wade says. Since the crank gear is twice as small as the cam gear, you can install the cam off 180 deg. When the piston is tdc, both valves should be closed.

Use grease to hold them in the hole

put a little white lube on the lifters and insert them. They will stay in place. Or the easiest way is to invert the engine block and assemble

An old school way to time that motor's cam-to-crank ,(even if you cant find one of the marks because the crank ones do wear off from end load) is to place piston @ top dead center and install cam where the slightest movement c.c.w. will touch the tappet of one valve and the same movement c.w.after t.d.c. will touch the other .I was poor,so by the time motors were thrown out, they were usually junk.I have videos on u tube of my old motors and 17 homemade motorized bikes under [email protected] Or just wade made.
