Do these do well sharing a bed with hydrangea?
@DukeGardens1
@DukeGardens1 3 жыл бұрын
From Paul Jones, curator of the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum: "The ginger lily is pretty vigorous and spreads rapidly, the clumps at least doubling each year. As for soil and light conditions, both the ginger lily and hydrangea have similar high light and good moisture requirements, so no conflict there. They would just have to be planted with some distance between them and the ginger lily kept at bay over time."

Thank you for leaving food and cover for the birds in the Gardens! Thanks for showing people that a garden doesn't have to be perfectly manicured.

Good Day, beside many anise shrubs around our backyard, we also have a couple of ruby or red star anise shrubs. These shrubs were originally located in the very back of our property with mostly shade, we moved them forward to enjoy those red star blooms about 3 months ago. Now were are starting to see some yellow leaves. We first thought it was transplant shock but it seems to be going on too long. Probably about 25% of the leaves are yellow. Have tried blood and bone meal additives two weeks ago with no luck. What could be the problem with these shrubs? Located in Eastern North Carolina - Thanks

Thanks for sharing. It's important for people to know that bees who are swarming are not looking to sting anyone - they just need a new home.

I always enjoyed Paul James on his show. This was the best show on HGTV. After he left, the whole channel went to pot. I don't even watch it anymore, and haven't for several years. I'm on KZbin now, just to see if I can find some of his shows. Hope he is doing well. He added a lot to our lives and I'm sure Jesus will reward him for his work.

(part 2) As far as companion plants go, Florida Anise is a cloning shrub that spreads by runners and would most likely crowd out other plants planted nearby. For a mixed hedge/screen, wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is a decent companion that can hold its own with Illicium floridanum and help create a screen with different leaf textures.
@DukeGardens1
@DukeGardens1 11 жыл бұрын
Hello MsTokies, To begin, Illicium floridanum is actually not Star Anise. Star Anise is an asian species whose botanical name is Illicium verum. Illicium floridanum is known as Florida Anise. While it does form seed pods that physically resemble Star Anise, it does not have the edible qualities of Illicium verum.
@MsTokies

do you get any star anise seed pods? also what can you grow near them in a companion plant?

Mealworms seem like a good thing to get a baby mockingbird started off with... something easy to put in its mouth, easy to swallow, and easy to digest. Soaked dog food or cat food (while it works okay), is tricky to give unless you put it in a syringe-like applicator to put in the bird's mouth. (i've seen another video of it being done on a different type of baby bird).

WOW! This is so elegant & beautiful, with a liberal dash of southern country charm (if not 'Southern Comfort' ha ha!) mixed in. I'm visualizing an early 20th century southern parlor... or indeed garden (no visualizing necessary) where two young lovers are courting & wooing one another.

I loved this show on HGTV on Sunday mornings . I think HGTV went to hell in a hand basket, when they took Gardening by the Yard off.They have one show after another about redoing a kitchen or bath . Ok , how many time can you see a bath or kitchen be redone, plus the way these shows are done you don't really learn anything. Come on HGTV show us a show that will save us money by learning to grow your own plants and food...
