Sorry mate, just saw this. You can on road park in Portinscale. I would park on the road in from the main Keswick road rather than in the village itself. It gets rammed especially at weekends. You pass a pub on the left. Park up just after that.

I'm your first viewer and watched your video from beginning to end so hopefully others will follow. It's not easy so my number 1 piece of advice is to just have fun and zero expectations. There really isn't anything as strange as people and it really is impossible to predict what catches people's eyes and gets them to click, and watch your video. My good lady uploaded a reel , it got 6 million views and went totally viral. I uploaded the same one and it got 177k views as a, video and 2.9k views as a reel, all same subject. Algorithms are something we'll never understand mate. Have fun , keep on doing what you're doing and what will be will be. And make a video on giant onions ha ha. Cheers ❤

Hi there just watched your video was hoping when you left Buttermere the bus took you over Honister Pass back to Keswick one of my favourites although saying that in May the bus decided to breakdown on the ascent to Honister slate mine after passing through Seatoller and we had to walk 🤣 bus driver managed to get bus started picked us back up at the slate mine and got us to Buttermere

Hi Christine. yep, it does a big loop over Honister pass, and it`s a spectacular route. I`m not surprised the bus broke down though. They really do take some hammer on those roads !

Did you take a bin bag with you? The last time I was there it was a midden! Sadly, we all have had to pick up the rubbish left behind by absolute gits! If we want to have a fire we have to fetch wood in because there is nothing dead there. Then, we can continue to enjoy it. We are really bloody angry, but that passes. It’s too beautiful to mess with your chi. 😁
@peteonthemove
@peteonthemove Ай бұрын
Hi Gracey. Yep, we always leave with everything we brought whether it`s on a site, or wild camping like this. I was pleasantly surprised actually with how little litter there was. We only picked up an additional small amount. There was plenty of small bits of wood lying about. We wouldn`t do a fire normally, but there were stone firepits pretty much everywhere, so we were happy we could do it safely. It was a great trip. Thanks very much for watching and commenting.

@@peteonthemove Good on ya! I hate to sound like a misery guts, but I have been wild-camping for 42 years. I have been 'caught' on a few occasions and land owners, in general, do not give a monkey's chuff if you're passing through and being respectful. I have never been moved on. A friend of mine was confronted by a bloke who was sick and tired of people who 'took a lend' and left their mess behind. When he showed the land owner the crap he had collected in his bin bag, they both sat down around the fire and shared a beer. I have asked for permission to camp and been offered 'the barn' - it was better than my house! Or, been spotted and waved at or talked to. 'Leave no Trace' is a great mantra, but 'Clear Up After the Knackers' is what we have to do, now. Otherwise, the knackers will make us all lose. I have been fed and watered and entertained and left alone, at home and abroad, by the best of people. It's joyous! So, crush a few cans; pick up the litter and carry it out. Don't let 'the gets' stop the joy.

I'm quite late to this video, almost twelve months. It's an interesting subject I think your helped by the fact your on a rail line and gave buses close by that can get you up to Carlisle. Personally I think public transport is dire unless your a tourist seeking the honey pots. Windermere, Grasmere, Borrowdale, Buttermere Keswick , Gkenridding etc. We live in a village ten miles down the A6 from Penrith. We get one (1) bus a week to Penrith for a tenner return, and three hours in Penrith. So from my perspective I've failed before I've even left the village unless I drive up to Penrith, pay parking fees etc.....i might as well just drive. Tourism is served well by the bus routes but stray off the well worn tourist track and public transport is shocking, the car is essential, I'm afraid for us and most of the villages around ours.
@peteonthemove
@peteonthemove Ай бұрын
Hi Peter. Thanks so much for the comprehensive reply. I take all of the points you made. We also live in a small village where the bus service has basically been cancelled. This is a major problem especially for the elderly who relied on the bus to get into town. Personally, I avoid taking the car into the lakes whenever I can. It`s super stressful with all the traffic. Plus, I suppose it`s one less car on the roads. I`m planning another video at the moment, using the link service into Wasdale and Buttermere (from Cockermouth) to see how that works out. As it stands, I would never take my car to Buttermere. It`s a hellish experience ! Thanks again for commenting.

I've often toyed with, (for: 'often toyed with' read: 'meticulously planned and scheduled') the Idea of doing a flying visit to the south central lakes (Windermere/Rydal/Grasmere as a day trip from Hull on the East Coast, just to prove I could do it in less than 24 hours. The big problem is that I don't drive, (and even if I did I don't have a car!... and if I did, I'd probably fall asleep at the wheel on the way home! 😟) so it would have to be totally by public transport and shanks's pony, but then of course, that would make it more of an achievement! I'd estimated that if the trains were all basicaly OK and not far off their scheduled timetables, and if I managed to set off from Hull Paragon at about 6am, Changing at Manchester Piccadilly for a train to Windemere (either direct or with another change at Oxenholme,) I could do Orrest Head (for photographs,) then take the 599 bus to Grasmere, (to get gingerbread for my missus. She loves it!) Then a walk down from Grasmere to explore Rydal Cave, (more photographs!) then along and around the Rydal Water shoreline to Rydal & Rydal Hall ('The Grot' there and its 'beautifully framed' waterfall is something I've always wanted to visit, so obviously even more photos!) then back on the next 599 bus as far as Waterhead; catch a boat across Windermere to Low Wray, and then do the (level) walk from there down the west shore of Windermere to the ferry, stopping off at Claife viewing station for even more photos of the lake. A walk into Bowness, a wander around the Glebe, the town and the shops & pubs, with hopefully, time for a swift pint, then on the 599 bus again, back to Windermere station and then to Manchester, and (eventually,) home to Hull around midnight. HOWEVER!!!! 1) Since I planned it all out, my wife's disability has gotten more serious, (by the way: she's disabled; didn't I mention that?) so I'd be relying on one of our daughters, (neither of who live with us,) to stand in as temporary carer from 6am until midnight, (or beyond,) and that might be a bit much to ask of either one of them. 2) The trains from Hull now go to Manchester Victoria and don't go to Manchester Piccadilly anymore, (except for the ones around midday - no use to me,) so I'd have to change at Leeds on the way! - Changing at Leeds and then at Manchester Piccadilly just increases the chances of possible delays. (also the same problem coming home!) 3) The queues at Sarah Nelson's gingerbread shop are notoriously long, so waiting to get served there could cause major problems to my schedule, (and I can't miss out that particular visit - She'd kill me! - That's my wife, not Sarah Nelson!!) 4) All (or any of) these problems could well lead to me being stranded in Manchester, with no available trains to the East coast until the early morning, defeating the idea of "Hull to the lakes and back IN A DAY!" (Not to mention leaving my defenceless wife alone and panicking for a few more hours!!) One day, perhaps....
@peteonthemove
@peteonthemove Ай бұрын
Bloody ell Dave. That`s quite the reply. It`s such a long way from Hull to the Lakes, especially in a day. You may need to delve into the world of Lake district acommodation. (or, selling a kidney, as it`s known in these parts) Good luck. I hope you manage a trip at some point. It`s a beautiful place. ps, I`m not a fan of Grasmere gingerbread tbh. It`s weird !

Oxenholme to Kendal is a (manageable) walk into Kendal. From there you could join the Stagecoach Cumbria Service 555 - that would have got you to Keswick for just two quid!!! (There might even be a bus stop for the 555 on the road from Oxenholme to Kendal: at Helsington perhaps - I'm not sure!)
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett 3 ай бұрын
Of course you could have taken a train from Carlisle to Penrith, then a bus to Pooley Bridge, then another down to Glenridding, and you'd be in the heart of the East Central lakes (and the bus services once you've got that far are excellent!)

Questions: We are looking at the 13 day "In Search of the Northern Lights" trip - I guess that was it? What month did you go? How many times did you see the northern lights? On the "Viking Vela" ship, there are "Deluxe Veranda" cabins and "veranda" cabins. They are the same size but Viking claims one is better than the other. "More amenities" - but they won't be more specific! I do see that the "deluxe" cabins are generally higher up and towards the middle of the ship - that's probably important in terms of comfort in heavy seas. Where on the boat did you stay?
@peteonthemove
@peteonthemove 5 ай бұрын
Hi. Yes, it was the Northern lights trip. We saw the lights 3 times on separate nights, and they were spectacular each time. With regard to the cabins, the V and DV are basically the same cabin. The perks you tend to get with higher category are restaurant reservations and earlier access to excursions. We stayed on deck 3, which is better than higher up in heavy seas. We took this trip in March and got some really heavy seas. Being on the lowest passenger deck did not stop the moment being severe at times. Hope that helps.
