hey quick question: what to do when your growls are too short? my false chords growls sound ok i think but i can't hold them for more than 4-5 seconds at absolute max. is that normal? i am pushing with the diaphragm.
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 29 күн бұрын
@@hazardeur sounds like you are pushing too much air out. I did this mistake too, even with the right technique. The trick is to take a deep breath, and push air out at an even, but slow pace. And not too hard. You could try putting a straw in a cup of water, and practise pushing the air at an even pace to make bubbles. You'll most likely find that you are pushing way more than needed. Same goes for growl

Hey Slowfingered! I liked your growl! fuckn awesome. I'm Terry, a guitarist. If you are busy with your own band or project that's fine. I founded the brutal death metal band "Cold Morgue". Right now I'm looking for a vocalist and I want to invite a guy who can make a fucking strong growl to join the band. We'll be online, but I'd like you to consider it! I'll post a link to some of my songs! If you like it, you can do the vocals. Waiting to hear back👍kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKuwfXaBiNesjM0

Just be natural and dont force it. You already know how to do it subconciously example when you are really angry and scream at someone, you may notice that u already has that basic growl. If you can somehow capture that technique while u r angry and learn to reproduce it later then u can build upon that basic growl to evolve into other type of growls

After I have practised I can feel a small pain in my throat. On a 1-10 scale it's a 2. It always dissapears. Is that normal in the beggining or am I doing something wrong?
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 7 ай бұрын
This is a tricky one to answer. But the most important thing is that you don't feel pain while doing it. Pain is a clear indication of wrong technique. But what you describe sounds more like being sore after a long workout, which is normal in the beginning. As it takes time for your muscles in the throat to adapt. But it can also be that you are pushing your voice alittle too much. Or trying to do too much in too short time. I mostly felt this in the beginning. Then i learned to not push as hard, and be more relaxed. But i still feel sore every now and then after a long recording session, or live show. Just listen to your body, and see if it gets better. If not - try something different. Hope this made sense, cheers

Thank you for sharing :) My question is: do you consider it safe to try to learn growling on your own, with YT tutorials for example, on a regular basis? I'd love to learn growling but I'm too anxious to find myself a coach. Yet I'm concerned that incorrect techniques, if not pointed out by someone and fixed, could make some damage to my vocal chords. What do you think?
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 7 ай бұрын
Think of it as going to the gym. Do you need a personal trainer to learn how to work out? No. You can figure it out on your own. Just pay attention to your body. Try stuff out. If you feel pain while doing it, then you're 100% doing it wrong. If not, then keep doing it until you see results. If you don't see results, try something new. Thats my approach to pretty much everything. Unlike working out, it is very hard for someone to hear if you have bad technique. It's all about how you feel when you do it. But with that said. It sure doesn't hurt having someone giving you tips & tricks to get stuff going in the right direction. As i did in this video. Hope my answer somewhat helped. Good luck, keep at it!

Right on, thank you. You sound alot more genuine if you use your own vocal style, because you're able to relax more and not think about it. Taking breaks and days off is super important. For the last album i did 4-6 hour recording sessions, then took one day off before next one. That way, you recover and don't build fatigue. Cheers

@Slowfingered

Hard to say. But i suspect that the cough is a result of using the wrong technique, which is causing strain. You should feel no strain, discomfort or pain at all. Check out my first video in the description. Wish you the best, don't give up. Cheers man

You forgot one very important thing and that's to bring it from your diaphragm not from your throat. If you try to do it with your throat, you're gonna get a sore throat and blow your voice out you have to bring it from Downlow in your diaphragm
@Slowfingered
@Slowfingered 11 ай бұрын
Correct. But i explain it in a different way. By learning to shout "Hey" as i do in th video, you automatically engage the right muscles. Using the 'diaphragm' and other terms never helped me understand what it means or how it should feel. But you're 100% right about not pushing it with your throat. Cheers
