Great video! I would like to add something from an engineering perspective. You could think of the nurtral wire as the mechanisim that allows current to alternate for AC curcuits. Without the nuetral wire it would be direct current, as there would be no option for the current to travel back to the source.

so if you only had one hot wire coming in through a single winding into a box of a (single pole) that ran to your house, you would never need a neutral, right? As there would never be an imbalance

I had a device at a major company that would shock you occasiinally! I measured the neutral and the live and fiubd the correct value. I then measured the neutral to ground and it read 250 v. We traced the ground back to tge assembly line and fiubd tgat the ground was not attached to a very large grounding bar. Got it repaired and reduced the neutral to less than a volt with alk other measurements correct. Interesting reason to check everything!

Can a disconnected grounding rod to the outside panel be the cause of mine tripping? The circuit to my washer is always tripped after the cycle is complete. The next time I go to wash, I have to reset the washing machine breaker in the panel.

My was rain water coming in through meter, then dripped into circuit breaker. I put silicone the outside glass meter dome to the panel.

Therefore it does balance the laod.

careful changing breakers, look at the circuit that makes the breaker to trip, maybe making higher amps will cause that gadget to blow and make fire....

I have been looking for a fault for 2 years. We have a dual light switch one works the other nope, also 4 wall sockets also don't work, breaker looks fine, not tripped. I checked wiring in wall sockets likes fine, dual switch looks ok, Could the issue be in a light outside, whereas switch is the first item on the breaker but the light which is outside has an issue like lose wire or maybe ground touching?

Does the transformer create the neutral or does it come from the electric company. ?

What’s confused me is if the neutral is suppose to return the power back to the transformer, and that the neutral is also connected the the ground bar in the panel, and if the ground is the easiest path of resistance than why doesn’t the neutral goes through the ground. Like why would it go to the transformer when it takes the easier route through the ground?

My late condolences to his passing at young age 😢. At 3:48, the outlet measures 122 V and when he took cover off at 8:38, wires measures same. Then why would he say the outlet is bad? I am confused.

Hey I'm just a smooth-brained ape here, but wouldn't a stronger more fundamental reason for the neutral is they help close a circuit, to allow electrons to flow back to the source, imparting some (but not all) energy to the load in the process, irrespective of the imbalance ?

I didn't have anything plugged in the bottom receptical in the kitchen and noticed at 3 a.m. the living room was off. checked breaker, nothing was flipped went back to receptical plugged the top to the bottom of receptical and everything turned on in the living room without anything plugged into that receptical the power shut off in kitchen and living room any idea

Pre 1995 houses in Norway receives 3 live wires, 230V between them, no neutral. This is the IT-system. All appliances are 230V. In new houses from after 1995, build in fresh areas, they receive 3 live wires and 1 neutral with 400V between live wires and 230V between any live and neural. The 230/400V TN-C-S system used in a larger part of the World outside the US.

This is the 2*120V US system. A larger part of the World are using 230/400V 3-phase TN-C-S using 3 ive and one neutral.

You really do a good job explaining this stuff to some of us novice's out here! What's up man? My name is Mike and I live in St. Charles, Missouri, I live with my room mate in a doublewide mobile home that was manufactured back in 1993 when all they used were those stab in the back receptacle's, every one of them are the stab in type! About 2 month's ago we had a bit of a cool spell and my room mate plugged in her space heater and all the socket's in her room all the way to the living room stopped working, along with the ceiling fan, the porchlight outside of the main entrance and 5 more receptacle's in the living room! I figured the space heater probably couldn't handle the load, so I went to the breaker box to reset the circuit breaker, when I opened the door on the panel box all of the circuit breaker's were in the on position! I found the one that controls her bedroom and I manually turned it off then on again to try & reset it but nothing happened! I just decided to pull the breaker in question and ran up to my home depot to buy a new one, it is a double 15 amp and each switch can be turned off & on independant of each other. I installed the new one and, "wah lah", everything worked again and I was the hero !!! 3 night's later she went to bed and decided to read a book so she went to turn on a little led lamp beside her bed and all of the light's and receptacle's went out again, a little led lamp overloaded the brand new breaker I just replaced 3 day's earlier !!! I watched all the diy video's on "You Tube" and I heard nothing good about these back stab receptacle's and I intend to replace all of them soon just to save myself more headache's in the future! I seem to think that one of these receptacle's has probably got a short where the wire was stabbed in at and replacing the receptacle should solve the problem, the only thing is I don't know which one it is so I'm just gonna start replacing them all ! I watched your video and you seem very wise when it comes to this stuff and I would respect your advice with this issue! Would it be too much trouble to get your opinion on this please, I would greatly appreciate it my friend! What would you do in this situation ??? Thanks a million bro! ✌

Neutral is the return path for single phase power. It only carries current on two phase if there is an imbalance in the load on each leg. Neutral is hot there to protect against lightning.

My Wall Outlet doesn't have an outlet connected to the Breaker. It's only a Breaker for each room in house. I have a telephone, which is connected to a wall outlet, and it doesn't give a dial tone. Phone battery has life. I want to ask you, I exchanged a different modem for a One Line modem. I had to replace Cable boxes because of this modem. Now, my Kitchen telephone has no dial tone at all because I replaced the router modem. Did I lose my telephone Jack in Wall due to this exchange? Thank You!

I have to watch all his videos because I bought a house in South Carolina and I don't know a whole lot about electrical but I do know that the framing addition was done wrong. Whoever ran all the ducting for the HVAC under the house did it wrong. The plumbing I'm going to have to tear out and redo. And whoever put the metal roof made a mess and now I've got dry rot. I don't have the money to hire an electrician I'm a disabled vet on a small income but I got to make sure this place is safe....

Your version is confusing and wrong. Aps ia across a voltage and load. If load and viltage is the same, the aps will be the same too. And it doest balance a shit.
