Interesting video! The venting issues and setting proper key heights must be tough for a repairman. Cool possibility’s though.

we're so glad you enjoyed it!! the Model 100 is truly something. from jake: "because of its construction, it came with an entire extra manual for setup (and repair)! makes for interesting speculation about where the design could have been further refined, if given the chance." thanks for watching!!

Buescher is my favorite vintage brand across all the voices. I have a true tone, alto, soprano and bass sax, a big b bari thay was a school horn that I found in a dumpster and with tlc still plays and plan on getting a tenor soon.

Is this the "naked Lady" model? My friend has a 10M alto saxophone with a 3-digit serial number, but it's not the "naked Lady" model. He wants to trade it for my Buffet 18-20 tenor saxophone.

@hexachord9 ай бұрын
thank you for watching! from jake: "yes. majority of manufacturers (before the 1930s/40s) had C saxophones in their production lineups. the American companies were the largest proponents of the instrument, however other companies (Europe) made them as well!"

Great informative video! It would be nice to have a wider shot next time so that we can see both hands on the sax. That way, we can see how and when you are using the alternate G#. Also, we would be able to see how to play the same phrase with and without the alternate G#. As it stands, you did a good job explaining the functionality.

A qualification about Snap-In pads...Yes, they were proof of concept for resonators in saxophones. And they greatly simplify a single-pad repair in the field. But you DO have to seat and probably also shim that pad! Doing a whole horn this way guarantees frustration. I tried it. $150 and a lot of time and stick shellac later, my tech had it singing.
@RatPfink6610 ай бұрын
H.N. White (dba King) doesn't seem to have made a lot of stencil horns beside their own Cleveland brand. They used shallow conical, clarinet style keycups, which might have betrayed the horns' origins too easily. OTOH Martin used beveled toneholes on their stencil saxes, just as on the brand name. But they're harder to spot at a glance.
@RatPfink6610 ай бұрын
It's tempting to call Bueschers a "classical" horn. It's part of the reason jazz players steer clear of them. Another reason is lack of name cachet - Buescher shared directors with Conn for years, and Conn got almost all the endorsement deals until Selmer started taking over the pro market. But there really wasn't a classical saxophone teaching/recital tradition in the US till it originated around Cecil Leeson in the 30s. (He played Martins, btw.) We got Sigurd Rascher as an emigré during WW2, and Larry Teal began teaching on Selmers after the war. However, there was a _pre_-classical precedent. Gus Buescher modeled his 1888 Conn on an Adolphe Sax alto whose timbre he liked. And he kept that horn, and modeled his saxes on it when he began his own company. He felt strongly enough about it to appear with it in a short film in 1924. It was a 1928 True-Tone that Rascher chose back in Germany, learning somewhere along the way that the horn and mouthpiece were inspired by Sax. In 1933 he replaced it with a New Aristocrat, which he played till retirement. This is the one sax _least_ associated with jazz (a shame - they're incredible instruments).

I've been told - mostly by old New York players - that you can't really get around on a 10M. I think they meant with scales, arpeggios, and a metronome, rather than just blowin'.
