Have a ton of admiration for Chibber and think his books represent a significant advance in no small part due to the clarity of their argument. AND/BUT: it’s spurious (and embarrassing) to suggest that the trans movement was “recognized by the state within minutes”…and says “I don’t know any movement that had to fight that LITTLE.” This guy teaches at NYU and is somehow unaware of the fights (decades and decades worth) that went on within blocks of his own campus by STAR and so many other orgs? Good grief.

In terms of how to do socialist political strategy, as opposed to critique of capitalism, I believe Ralph Milliband already did a lot of the work in the English language, in Marxism and Politics and elsewhere. As an Anglican, I'm all in favour of an ecumenical journal and approach, and the avoidance of sectarianism as far as possible. I don't at all see how doubling down on the splits of the 20th century over doctrine, founding hero and party form at all help with building the working class into a class in itself and for itself, which in the first place means creating the working class as a political party - singular. Leninists, and especially Trotskyists it seems to me, are in such a hurry to get to the siezure of power in the midst of revolutionary conditions by a disciplined party of dedicated revolutionaries that they completely skip and scorn the preceding period of class and party formation which enabled any working class political intervention in the decade 1910-1920 whatsoever. But without that long work of developing consciousness and organisation through open, internally democratic, electoral, national mass parties, in tandem with the development of union organisation and militancy, all the Blanquism and Lenin's party of a new kind would have been meaningless and fully futile. So the first thing to do is the establishment of an autonomous, independent working class party to take part in elections and to support and incite workplace militancy, on a broad basis. There can be no further countenancing of the idea of voting for or supporting in any way the oligarchic bourgeois parties of government such as Dems and Reps in the US or New Labour, Lib-Dems, Conservatives and the bourgeois separatist parties in the UK. They must be fought publicly, consistently and unconditionally as class enemies. And to do that, in the west, the professional-managerial class needs to recognised as an enemy class, as much as the bourgeoisie and rentier oligarchs are enemy classes. The main problem has been professional-managerial class hijacking of once social democratic mass parties, which have consequently ceased to be either social democratic (let alone democratic socialist) or mass based. Obsessions with non-class identities and etiquette are expressions of pmc self-promotion and policing of class boundaries to exclude ordinary workers. That is why the socialist lefts in western countries are now almost devoid of working class membership, including among Leninists of both traditions, and ineffective through self-isolation from the masses in class terms.

Have there ever been a successful viable humane political society matching aspirations mentioned here, to take as a model? 3. Didn't Marx and Engels both very much discuss the state. Yes, they DID. Engels book and Critique of the Gotha Program, Marx's early writing, even the debates on the thefts of wood. Is this guy kidding? Critique of the Paris Commune's not having a "state" of the workers to repress the ruling class. What? Confused completely. Why is this David guy saying this? POLITICAL ECONOMY IS about the state. Not getting this at all.
@Class_Unity

There are places where Marx wrote about the state, but he never got around to the book of Capital that he planned to write about the state. Everyone knows this; it's not a criticism. It is often said that this is the one thing he left incomplete. Engels then wrote a book about the state after Marx's death.

As Vijay said, western “Marxists” skip over Lenin, who pioneered the turning of Marxist theory into a successful revolutionary socialist reality (at least under Lenin and, yes, Stalin, contra the terrified and terrifying CIA-capitalist-anticommunist propaganda that we Americans have been breathing, and choking on, all our lives). Chomsky is an anticommunist, having accused Lenin of pushing socialism to the right (by which Chomsky means revolutionary socialism). Wondering if, in the nonsectarian spirit Vijay is promoting, he has engaged Chomsky on this elephant-in-the-room point? That would make a great book!
