Superb talk! Not just for people invested in this historical topic but also as a methodological lesson / tutorial. Personally I feel that the whole "question" is actually two separate, yet combined, issues: Why did the empire of the one party system collapse? Why did the Soviet Union, and the whole "Eastern Block" system disintegrate so rapidly? At least with the 2nd question answer is rather obvious: Both the Eastern block as well as the Soviet Union functioned as a cluster of sovereign states / republics. The Moscow center had to/wanted to (both options are valid for different cases) preserve and work with those political units. Once the central Moscow capital became weak the local forces immediately usurped powers. And this happened even if these powers weren't ethnically homogenous and non Russian. Its a natural tendency of systems. The local branch manager would be happy to become a "boss" and not just an appointed manager, if he feels he can.

Excellent lecture, adding to my knowledge from sources such as Tim Snyder. I was not bored to death at all! Studied 15th, 16th and 20th century European history at school so it's interesting to see those periods in a new light now. Professor Plokhy has authored a number of books, not all of which were mentioned by Dr McGlynn at the start (herself a widely praised author). Sound quality could have been better but as a native English speaker I had no trouble understanding anything

‘Orwell, Graham Greene, and another insignificant Brit.’ I’m tired about equating ‘the west’ with the English speaking world. A corner of the Roman world, the worthless province of Britain, think they are the only heirs of the west and morally superior to the rest. Not my west.

If it was a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it would be over at least one year ago. The problem is - Russia's fighting against the US' assertive power that lately has become too assertive and now poses a real danger. Dominic should wake up a little from the Napoleonic wars, here it's totally different time and a different reality.

As someone who was there doing business I think you have collectively got it aobut right. That said, i think Putin's increasing control of the media had much to do with the antidemocratic swing post 2004. The soft coup in February 2004 which pushed out Kasyanov was a major turning point that is often ignored. Kasyanov was, to a moderate degree, scapegoated. Moderate because his tax and legal reforms were revolutionary and smalll private businesses thought them revolutionary.. It became possible to be legal and solvent.

“In Europe there is a people forgotten by historians - the people of Rusyns, Rutenes. They have their own history, different from the history of Poland and even more different from the history of Muscovy. They have their own traditions, their own language, separate from Moscow and Polish. They have a pronounced individuality, behind which is fighting. History must not forget that before Peter I, the people that we now call Ruthenians were called Russians, or Rusyns, and their land was called Rus and Ruthenia. And the people that we now call Russians were called Muscovites, and their land - Muscovy. At the end of the last century, everyone in France and Europe was well able to distinguish Russia from Muscovy "C. Delamard, French politician, 1869

Seems like Delamard the POLITICIAN didn't get the memo from his fellow compatriot. “These Russians for some time have been called Muscovites, which comes from the capital city Moscow, which carries the title of Duchy. But that duchy is not the first of the country, for the prince formerly called himself grand duke of Vladimir, and continues to do so at present, styling himself duke of Vladimir and Moscow. Therefore, it may be said to be an ERROR not only on our part, who are faraway, but also among their nearest neighbors to call them Muscovites and not Russians. They themselves, when asked what people they are, respond rusak, which means Russians. If one asks them from what place they are, they respond iz Moskvy, from Moscow, Vologda, Riazan, or other towns. It is also necessary to understand that there are two Russias- that is to say, this one which has the title of Empire (Which the Poles call White Russia) and another called Black Russia, which is a dependency of the kingdom of Poland and is adjacent to Podolia. It is this Black Russia of which the king of Poland styles himself lord in his titles when he says ‘Grand Duke of Lithuania, Russia, Prussia,’ etc. I wish to inform the reader of this so that he may know that the Russians in question are those formerly called Scythians and since then Muscovites by ERROR, inasmuch as Moscow is only a single town whose inhabitants are called Muscovites. It is as if one wished to call all Frenchmen Parisians because Paris is the capital of the kingdom of France (and with more reason, since Paris is the capital from earliest times, and Moscow has been for only one or two hundred years).” - Jacques Margeret, French traveler and military officer, 1607

In the work “Rich Wine” (1621), Metropolitans Hilarion and Clementy are called Rusyns in contrast to the monk Pimen, a Muscovite. Further in the same work it is told how the Patriarch of Jerusalem reproached the Cossacks for their recent campaigns in Muscovy, for the “Muscovites” are Christians." \ Sowita wina // AUZR. - K., 1887. - Part I. - Vol. 7. - pp. 449-450, 485

Antonio Possevino, after visiting Muscovy and communicating with Ivan the Terrible, wrote two books ....Muscovites do not know the Slavic language, although it is so close to Polish and Russian that that priest, a Slav by nationality, whom I sent to Moscow, very soon began to understand a lot of the Muscovite language, although, on the contrary, Muscovites, with great difficulty, they understood Slavic. As for worship and the performance of church rites, all this is done in Slavic, and it is almost the same as the language adopted by the Russian subjects of the Polish king. They themselves rewrite all the books, but do not print... Muscovy, by tradition, is extremely dependent in matters of religion on Rus', which is under the rule of the Polish people (more recently, Moscow bishops were confirmed by the Kiev metropolitan of the Russian faith. Kyiv is a region of Rus' under the rule of the Polish king). .... Some Russian princes (some of them have already converted to the Catholic faith) will accept the goodness of the Holy See with open arms. When we were traveling through royal Rus' to Muscovy, some noble people spoke to us....

@@marik464 "The present Russians may be divided into three branches deriving their names form certain historical circumstances. 1. The name of White Russia is given to the provinces conquered from the 13th to 14th century by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. These were ancient territories of the Krivitches, Polotchans, Dregovitches, Drevlians, Doulebes, now forming the governments of Vitpesk, Mohilef, and Minsk... 2. Little Russia includes the country of the ancient Severians and Polians increased by colonies; that is, the governments of Kief, Tschernigof, Pultowa [Poltava], Kharkof, Volhynia, and Podolia. It even extends beyond the frontiers of the empire into Red Russia or Old Gallicia... belonging to Austria, and peopled by 3,000,000 of Ruthenians or Russians. 3. Great Russia grouped around the ancient Muscovy, and occupying the place held by many Turkish or Finnish tribes. To Great Russia belongs Northern Russia (Arkhangel), Eastern Russia (the Volga, Kazan, Astrakhan), and New Russia or South Russia (CHERSON, Ekaterinoslaf, KHARKOF, ODESSA, THE CRIMEA). Great Russia as a whole, apart from Novgorod and Pskof, was won from foreign races by Russian colonization. It was a colony of the Kievian Russia, and, though for a time subjugated by the Tatars, was able to shake off their yoke, while Kief still remained a Lithnuanian province. It continued to extend its conquests in the East; then turning to the West in the 17th and 18th centuries, was able to RECOVER White Russia and Little Russia. In the empire the White Russians number 3,000,000, the Little Russians 12,000,000 and the Great Russians 41,000,000. There are dialectical differences between the idioms of these three FAMILIES, which historical and literary influences easily explain. SOME WITERS HAVE BEEN ANXIOUS TO ESTABLISH THE EXISTENCE OF A PROFOUND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GREAT RUSSIA AND HER TWO NEIGHBORS. They have reserved the name of Russians and the character of Slavs to the White Russians and the Little Russians, and have PRETENDED to see in the 'Muscovites' nothing but Russian only in language... A more careful study shows us that Muscovy was formed in the first palce by the migrations of Russian colonists, in the second place by the assimilation of certain foreign races." - Alfred Rambaud, 19th century French Historian

The first American to describe “The Blob” was US President Dwight Eisenhower in his farewell address in January 1961: [kzbin.info/www/bejne/haqlf6CbmLunmrcsi=V1HxZPwsTxjFyk7a [0:8:43]]. He called it the “Military-Industrial-[Congressional] Complex. He intended to include the word “Congressional,” but was persuaded by his staff to remove it because they thought it was too inflammatory. Nevertheless, Eisenhower thought that the MICC was a major danger to American democracy and told the American people in no uncertain terms to beware of its influence, whether “sought or unsought.” Everyone should listen to this speech in its entirety for it is prescient and relevant for our time. Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern came up with a more descriptive and more inclusive term for “The Blob:” The Military-Industrial-Congressional-Intelligence-Media-Academia-Think Tank (“MICIMATT”) Complex. Of course, we can also use Mr. Trump’s term: the “Deep State.” What this term lacks in descriptive value it makes up for in conveying the sinister, malignant , and baleful meaning that Eisenhower originally intended to convey. Mr.Eisenhower would be aghast and dumbfounded if he could see what his MICC has become today.
