This was so interesting! Thank you for explaining the significance of the scene depicted. In this current fractured time we live in, I find comfort in this painting: moving forward and over coming the horrors of war/division in a grounding, life giving way. I want that for myself and our country.

What's amazing about this painting is its context, and the photo at 4:51 is the perfect contrast. The wheat field is a great picture of peace - the greatest need of our time.

Im not familiar with Pieter Aertsen but some of this feels like shoehorning religious connections
@KellyBagdanovАй бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I can see why you would think that. Shoehorning is an apt description of what Northern artists were doing during this time, for various reasons. Hiding religious meanings in everyday objects is a defining element of Northern Renaissance art, but beyond that, Antwerp was caught between warring factions of Catholics and Protestants. Aertsen had suffered during periods of iconoclasm. Protestants felt the religious paintings of Catholic artists were idols and broke into churches and destroyed them. It is believed much of Aertsen's works were lost due to this. So the artists moved to genre painting, landscapes, portraits, etc. but continued to work in religious and political messaging. Religion greatly overshadowed society during this period (where your loyalties lay were often a life or death issue) and drove most of the artwork produced. Additionally, there were economic considerations. Artists had to appeal to those with money, frequently the church, royalty, and guilds. Unlike today, each work had to serve multiple purposes, and decorating a wall was only one consideration. Viewers in the Northern areas would have read these works easily, as religious iconography was common. Artists shoehorned in symbols so that the viewer always had something different to think about. Visual images were less common, quite expensive, and so this, in essence, gave more bang for the buck. If you're interested in more background on this work, you can check out this blog post. . www.kellybagdanov.com/2022/10/02/aertsen-the-backstory-of-a-meat-stall-with-the-holy-family-giving-alms/

I'm sitting observing one of the other versions in Toronto (The Art Gallery of Ontario). There are some differences, but much of the analysis feels the same. The floor is different, and very linear. It draws the eye almost along the timline of the next few days. Out imtoemward the pool, and eventually the Atch in that background). There's even a bench positioned in just the right spot to observe the painting from the perfect angle. I can't imagine that's coincidence.

I’m a Pisano on my mothers side.Direct lineage my family came to America in the 1920s from Naples then my grandfather Vincent Pisano and his family moved to Vermont after he got sick with Alzheimer’s.My aunt and I are the only artists. My cousin the only boy to carry the Pisano name passed away a few years ago very young and the blood is still here but the name may be lost to history. I wanted to carve in stone before I even knew who I was which explains a lot.

Your video essays are very well done, thank you. One idea you might want to consider: the font you're using is perhaps wrong for the material, more appropriate to a birthday party announcement than a serious inquiry into art and ideas. Plus, capitalizing everything also is maybe too much, especially combined with the playful font. But mainly, I like your videos. Thank you.

Apparently Michael was arrested for sodomy with other men on several different occasions. That explains his yearning to paint the images of nude men and young boys. And of course a pope would commission Michael to paint nude men and young boys in the Sistine chapel... Thats kind of their thing. That was like hanging the Playboy centerfold up on your wall as a horn dog staight male. "I hung Miss January on the wall because of the artistic photography" LOL, sure you did...

Me too! Thanks for commenting. The only other one in video form is Durer's Rhinoceros, which is actually two videos. One tells the backstory and the other looks at the print. Here is the link to the video...www.kellybagdanov.com/2019/02/15/durers-rhinoceros-where-science-and-imagination-meet/ I've also written about Durer's Nativity woodcuts on my website, where I look at several different woodcuts. www.kellybagdanov.com/2017/12/15/albrecht-durer/ And if you like woodcuts, one of my favorite, and often unknown items is prayer nuts. Tiny miniature engravings, they are fascinating. Here is a short video on those. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJKbloKCgNWKoNE
