I think the artist on this story knew exactly what he did. The art reminds me alot on some experimental art in old epic and heavy metal magazines. A mix of collage, drawing and sometimes digital. You can't get more of a retro look for something. Also that the main woman was that much outstanding from the rest seems definitely intended in context of the story. I don't think it's that bad like you described it, but I'm also not much into it.

I absolutely loved Leaving the Garden. This might be Subs best story, and the brutal scratch lines of Pace's art is a match made in HELL! Glad I got introduced to his art!

I have no eyes for digital coloring, so thanks for mentioning. I really liked the gloomy atmosphere in the Doug Braithwaite run. It's a shame that your most popular review was the roast of SSoC #1. It seems to be true that negativity tends to attract more attention on the internet.

Yeh I really like the Jonas Scharf here. Very different to de la torre and braithwaite and suits all the characters shown here, all of who will be featured in The savage sword of Conan to get the ball rolling on the new comic come autumn. (It's what we call fall in the UK!)

Robert E Howard is guilty of being accurate and realistic when talking about different races and which ones have been capable of invention and building civilizations.

Very wrong actually. Several "Savage" peoples, come from great civilizations n cultures and kingdoms thousands of years before and during so called western civilization. The Americans of the 1930s were I'll informed about ancient history. Conan is set in 10000 BC. In reality most westerners were living in caves and beating thier wives over the head to get laid. Compared to great civilizations of indigenous peoples. It's 2024,no one is going to belive the lies anymore.

Sure thing, Robert E Howard was accurate and realistic when describing the races in civilizations of mythological fantasy lands like Atlantis and Lemuria. That’s why these stories are classified as “fantasy“ there never was a race of people called Cimmerians. If you read L Sprague Décamps biography of Robert Howard called “dark valley destiny“ you will see on page 198 that Howard leans on outdated pseudoscientific “scholarship“ from the 1920s for inspiration to his books , particularly Lewis Spences book “Atlantis in America from 1925“ Louis was a Scottish mythologist who wrote books on Atlantis and claimed that Cro-Magnar people of Post glacial Europe were Atlantean‘s driven from their island homeland, and howard literally has his characters repeating this crap verbatim. Reading that biography would really help you a lot because you would learn that not only was Howard not trained to be a historian or anthropologist but he never made it to college at all ! He barely survived high school and hated any kind of authority figures telling him what and how to write . He read books by independent “scholars” from the 18th century whose work was never cross checked or verified. So enjoy the storytelling but don’t fool yourself into thinking that Howard was a historian, Howard made the same mistake that Lovecraft and Hitler made by thinking pseudo scientific racial theorists were actually documenting history when they were documenting their own psychosis. In that biography ,it goes into detail how Robert was an avid boxing fan and practitioner, writing several stories on the subject. It’s curious to notice how Howard omits the presence of black boxing champions like Jack Johnson ,the first black heavyweight , who was in his prime during Howard’s day. And ignores the fact that there was a separate championship for black fighters to prevent them from competing with whites due to the fear white America head of a black man beating a white man in the ring. Howard wrote with contempt about Mexicans in Texas when writing to Lovecraft and Howard depicts blacks as cowardly and weak and his stories but A substantial portion of boxing champions have been black or Latin since his day, so he would probably hate The racial make up of combat sports nowadays. So if Howard couldn’t be “ACCURATE“ and “REALISTIC“ about the dominance of black boxers over white boxers in his own day, What in the world makes you think he could be “accurate“ and “realistic“ about ancient civilizations that he knew nothing about ? Howard was Reading Madame Helena Petrona Blavatsky of the theosophical society, that’s the bizarre Russian New Age crackpot who wrote about aliens ,lost continents ,magical powers and seven root races in a book called the secret doctrine that inspired Hitler’s fantasies. Lol !! I mean come on dude 😅🤣😂couldn’t discuss accurately if he did, Try to take the time to debunk some of your beliefs every once in a while ,it’s been over 100 years since Howard wrote that stuff ,it shouldn’t be that hard. @@saladinbryant3653 By virtue of the fact that people today still believe the nonsense they believed back in the 20s shows that it’s not just the era they lived in, but the twisted mentality that persists and perpetuates. And you’re only half right with regards to their greatness is authors because prejudice aside Howard could actually write well, Lovecraft on the other hand is boring dull and repetitive “ we went to such and such place on such and such day with such and such weather and saw such and such monster and.....the end” repeat said formula for next story. Where is Howard had cowboy stories , boxing stories, magical fantasy stories from different eras as well as ones he created. Etc.

I think you're spot on here with the Conan story. Such a shame as i really like Fafners drawing of Conan himself. Its all just so disjointed. And that dinosaur! It looks worse every time i see it! A ridiculous story all round i think and best forgotten. The mag is thankfully saved by everthing else in it (overlooking the printing issues of course) Apart from the great Kane story, i really enjoyed the Jim Zub story. Fingers crossed for the next few issues.

Great video! It looks like the publishers have addressed the print issues for the next Issue. At least this is what Fred Malmberg reports. The big giveaway is going to be the reproduction of the Hyborian Age map...and whether or not it looks like a moldy mess. Crossing my fingers. Patch's 'Solomon Kane' story was the definite highlight (and Zub's prose piece). I'm on the record as liking Fafner’s art here...but I get that others don't. I've high hopes for the Zub/Pace story in the next issue. ⚔️

All VERY warranted criticisms. I'm also not in the least against digital artwork, but they really needed to pick a lane to lean into here. Either go 3D, or go drawn, but the way these look, it comes off like one of those early 90's cartoons where they would plop some 3D figure into the middle of of actual animation, and it would stick out like a sore thumb.
