2 times a day 1 time going toward Rocky Mount and then back to Greenville in the afternoon anywhere from 2-5 pm but usually 3-4 pm is the hot zone for the afternoon trip

Probably…I’m very alien with the ns always have been because I’ve lived in csx territory my entire life. I want to railfan the ns but in Greensboro and beyond someday because once you get east of Greensboro the traffic sucks balls there’s more amtrash than freight and that for me is very disappointing. It’s always good when something other than 350/349 come through it’s a shame it isn’t a daily occurrence though

@@CSX2665 for sure. Greensboro does have a lot of NS freight trains there that includes the tankers grain phosphate and potash that go and come from the NC H line as required. It is a rare occurrence in which you can be able to see E51 and E50 in Greensboro but you really can’t count on that. Freights unfortunately don’t run on schedule.

@@FlipperGames505 350 seems to be quite predictable passing thru raleigh anywhere from 7 am to 1 pm but usually between 8-11 am most days, on the rare occasion i don't see it in that timeframe. its ashame the unit trains aren't a daily occurence, the state brags about how much of a corridor the north carolina railroad line is yet the traffic on it east of greensboro absolutely sucks balls. a few decades ago east of greensboro the line had more activity and trains but as usual as time goes on it slowly changes for the worst and starts to suck @ss.

The closest you can get to tracking is with a portable radio/scanner set to the railroad frequencies and of course experience and patience. When having a radio, there’s a push to talk button but be careful not to accidentally press it. you do NOT for any reason broadcast on the channel, that will get you in serious trouble

Haha well that’s not complicated when my radio announces the transmission of an axle counting device (defect detector) a few miles north of the location of this video. Axle count read out 274 now subtract 6 from that (the lead solo unit) and divide 268 by 4 and you get the total car count :)) that formula works for all train axle counts

I wasn’t hell bent on seeing it but being that I managed to put myself in its path I appreciated the opportunity to film it, though I really want to see Atlantic coast line unit on home rails that one is my favorite out of all the heritage units

I had a strong gut feeling, the cars didn’t look like q409 or any other regular mixed train through the area. What’s also strange is it did not stop at the yard office, I believe it’s possible that they swapped crews right off grand Avenue which is just outside of downtown Rocky Mount

@@CSX2665 it runs every Saturday morning to Rocky Mount and afternoon turning back as far as I’m concerned. Haven’t been at elm city for a long time. This is the Warsaw and Rocky Mount local route.

Looks like 652 and 653 are back but terminating at hamlet now and taking the a line and the c&o instead of the south end sub and clinchfield?

@@CSX2665 yeah I could easily recognize these symbols depending on the freight cars now. Those had the intermodal cars from Wilmington so yea it was easily recognizable as the F716. Oh and the thing is Q583 & Q582 doesn’t run to and from Rocky Mount anymore. They both now operate to and from Hamlet.

@@FlipperGames505I had a feeling but again I had some doubt because I didn’t have a radio on me there were some instances where 583 also had some stacks on it which is why I had doubts. Before 2018 I always came out unarmed and blindly railfanned though like you certain cars allowed me to tell what train it was but unit trains like coal and grain I was forced to label them as unknown due to no radio. and whaaaat? Really? That’s a shame because it meant 2 more trains for the south end sub though I don’t know what cars would have to go to Rocky Mount from Nashville tn and vice versa

@@CSX2665 well things change a lot around for trains. I can easily tell by these train numbers now due to the mixed freight cars radio or no radio. But sometimes I don’t really know much on like the CSX tanker grain coal etc as those are very much mixed in. Sometimes I take my radio out and usually it’ll relay the number out if I’m in range. Typically I’m out by Norfolk Southern so I would know mostly every train number there is. And yeah 583 and 582 got relocated to Hamlet. Oh and I got a question, does that F728 still work around Tarboro?

@@FlipperGames505as far as I know they sometimes work an agricultural customer in Tarboro but not sure on how often probably not often, picking up and setting off a few hoppers of potash. that’s the only work that they do as far as I know since the line is practically dried up now of business sadly, I remember 20 years ago it was still brimming with customers and there was more traffic there was another train (plus unit sulfur trains and 1 coal train) that went working those customers as it made its way to the paper mill in Plymouth I have slowly watched it die through out the years unfortunately

Those are refrigerated reefers and used to be a high priority unit train of its own, the once mighty Tropicana train from Bradenton to Greenville New Jersey sadly decline in traffic forced them to send it on slow general merchandise service for sometime then after several years of complains they finally moved the block into fast priority intermodal services like this one. Most of the containers you see are domestic meaning they never leave North America or loaded onto ships and are usually handled in inland container terminals, same for the truck trailers. The smaller 40’ foot containers yes, those are multi use universal shipping containers that can fit on roadways across several countries as opposed to the domestic 53’s hence their name domestic.
