What Is the story behind this!!!!! Was everything played on the RA-90? Where did that incredible kick drum, snare, bass line, synth and Japanese flute sounds come from?

I still wish it had a simple sequencer, not so advanced (with chords and stuff) like the QY series, just a simple multitrack sequencer. I have this but miss the sequencer for quick ideas and still chasing a QY 70-100 which became expensive.

These sounds are NOT in a Roland MT-32. I own a MT-32 for many, many years and it sounds nothing like this. You might have mixed it up with the Roland SC-55 'Sound canvas', also from 1991. I don't own that one, but from demo's I've heard, I'm quite sure that has some or maybe even all of the same sounds in it as the RA-90.
@endlessvoid84
@endlessvoid84 Жыл бұрын
You probably confused the RA-90 and the RA-50. The RA-50 does have MT-32 sounds. But the RA-90 has just the sounds of sound canvas. We have no reason to cheat in this situation. This track is a multitimbre recorded straight from the module (with some post-processing).

Do you know if the engine and its sounds differ much from the QY series?
@autumnbrushtail

As far as I can tell, this synth uses a particular ROM chip with 2 MB of 12-bit, General MIDI compatible instruments. I don't think any of the QY synths use these samples exactly, but this ROM was also used in a few other things, one of which being a few soundcards for PC and MSX that use OPL4 chips. The MSX cards however don't have the DSP chip however, so are completely dry.

@@autumnbrushtail From comparing the specs in their respective manuals and my general knowledge of both series, I suspect the QY22 has the same synthesis engine and sound set as the MU5. They both have General MIDI (no XG), 28 polyphony, 16 parts/channels, 128 normal instruments, 8 drumkits. The drumkit listings look the same too. But I haven't done any listening comparisons myself.

Excellent performance and these little keyboards may not be much on their own. However however, once you multitrack with them and put effects on like you have done, it really gives them a brand-new lease of life and you have made it sound very professional so well done.

Excellent performance and an excellent vintage instrument. I’ve owned one of these as well as many others over the years including the PSS 680 many years ago. Your performance is excellent and I love the video affects. How did you manage to get all those effects on the video? I’m in the early stages of using Final Cut Pro so I’m a complete beginner though I’ve used iMovie and other apps. please visit me here on KZbin as I have uploaded a handful of multitrack demos and videos to coincide.

Awesome track and video. 👏 Looks like a cool box. Too bad it doesn't have a sequencer. I'd pick it up to play alongside my QY70 but I guess the QY has all the sounds + more.

Yamaha MU5 does not have a built-in sequencer, so it is controlled by external sources (either using a DAW or an hardware sequencer)

About RA90's Roland. I ask for help! I would like to command a Roland RA90 from the PRO E. I connected with midi cable OUT (Pro E) with IN (RA90). What do I have to do now? Can someone help me? Carlo from Italy
@endlessvoid84
@endlessvoid84 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Not sure if I can fully help you. I used RA-90 with DAW as a sequencer. I simply used basic midi-out plugin to rule all the commands on each midi-channel: instrument, panning, velocity etc. As I remember by now RA-90 can work in two modes: GM and GS. Applying midi signals in each mode is different. In general you should set on your Pro E the same midi-channel you want to sound on RA-90 and play notes. In GM mode you can change panning and effects from RA-90 panel. But if you want more sophisticated style of using midi commands, you should better check manual. For example in GS mode you have access to other 128 sounds (128 GM + 128 GS). These sounds are better and more realistic, but you can choose them only by midi commands, and there is no way to choose them from panel. That's why better to learn manual and to use all the power of midi with this great lo-fi machine :)
