What is with the knife? You don't have the strength to tear a pawpaw in half and squeeze everything out both sides?

I love this, and i love hazel nuts, butthese really arent in any risk of even joining the "at risk" list, these are definitely great , but if anyone wants to help an endangered species, the american chestnut is so endangered, its considered functiknally extinct because of how on the brink it is. (Due to a combination of deforestation and a disease brought over with foreign chestnut varieties that it has little defense against) You have a much higher chance of success with american hazelnuts, but a much bigger impact if youre successful with american chestnuts :) Both are good though!

Planning to plant a bunch of Am Chestnut seeds in the next 1-4 years. The American Chestnut Foundation just did a massive planting a few miles from here of their last batch of trees. The nuts from this planting will be 15/16ths American and will be used to reforest our woodlands with this beautiful species. Happy to jump on that train soon!

Yeah, I used to raise a kind of silk moth that ate these. They aren't dangerous if you aren't trying to eat the seeds. The poison is water soluble so washes off easily, and is also denatured if heated to over 180 F. It IS a plant that a lot of people are allergic too, though. So if you have any plant allergies, you may not want it in your garden. The pollen is light and easy to distribute on the wind, and touching the leaves can cause rashes if you are alergic.

I dealt with them once last year at another off site garden. That was my first time really dealing with them, and I just hung those beetle trap bags. I am def NOT a great source for information on how to deal with them. So sorry!
@caburtnett1980
@caburtnett1980 2 ай бұрын
@@lancasterfoodforest Well thats where you're wrong. Any little idea helps. It's not just what else you can do, it's what you shouldn't. For instance, don't use those bags! They bring 5x more beetles to your yard. They weren't really intended to kill them, but people still liked the feeling of seeing "progress." Squirt them with soapy water or knock them into a bucket of soapy water. I try to be organic as I can so I use Neem, soaps and naturally occuring pesticides. I'm looking into BTG right now so if you have any interest in these options, look em up, use em and let me know what you find👍
@lancasterfoodforest
@lancasterfoodforest 2 ай бұрын
Ok great to know. Yeah the bags feel like your making progress, but they didn't really help. The beetles still destroyed my peach tree in that garden. So often I've found that good organic Pest control involves just hand picking the pests off yourself

Hartmann's plans company. They all came in great condition. I'm really happy about them. Prices were AMAZING. Only thing is they only do wholesale orders. So you have to order like 100 plants. At $2-3 per plant it's totally worth it. So if you don't have the space, id suggest seeing if some friends want to split an order with you, or you could order and resell on Marketplace.
