How anyone can call this "shuffling" is beyond me. Even if I'm playing a casual game, if my opponent "shuffled" like this, I'd be just as pissed as if they had brought loaded dice
@SeekOutandPlayАй бұрын
I take it you do not play Magic: the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, or the myriad of other card games in which pile shuffling is considered standard practice? I've seen cheating by players who use riffle and especially side-shuffling, but have yet to run across an example of cheating through pile shuffling. But if you have a video example from a tournament, I'd certainly watch it.
@JCEmotep18 күн бұрын
@@SeekOutandPlay It's not 'standard practice'. The MTG rules states you are allowed 1 'pile shuffle' to COUNT your cards. The judges rules reference further elaborate upon this by saying pile shuffling is, and I quote "completely non-random". Pile shuffling is at best meaningless and at worst cheating. If you pile shuffle, then properly shuffle using another method, it was a waste of time. If you pile shuffle then insufficiently shuffle you deck using another method, your initial 'pile shuffling' which is essentially just weaving, will give you a more even distribution of lands/energy to other cards etc., which is cheating. If you properly shuffle a deck afterwards, the initial state of your deck doesn't matter. Of course people get suspicious of your shuffling though, if you always want the initial state of the deck to be intentionally stacked in your favor.
@SeekOutandPlay18 күн бұрын
@@JCEmotep Pile shuffling was standard practice when I played MTG which admittedly was some time ago, just like when the video was published. If you have the date on when MTG changed its rules on pile shuffling, I would be interested to know. Having said that, pile shuffling was standard practice when the opponent handed their deck over in large part so that their cards could be counted, especially in tournament situations. That was used to catch those who didn't properly re-sideboard their cards which is also a form of cheating even if when unintentional. As far as this video goes, it uses cards from 1066: Tears to Many Mothers and makes no mention in the description about MTG. What are the official rules of 1066 concerning pile shuffling? Especially when the game is played solitaire? And if I wanted to cheat in a solitaire game, why bother to pile shuffle when I could simply stack the cards any way I want? Pile shuffling also does not bend the cards which are not sleeved, also as stated in the description. Riffle shuffling and even side shuffling damages cards over time that are not sleeved, at least in terms of the 1066 cards. Which is the point of the video again, as stated in the description.
@JCEmotep17 күн бұрын
@@SeekOutandPlay To be clear, it's the rules for tournament play, I doubt the regular rules dives too deeply into specific methods of shuffling, but I could be wrong. Of course for any game played solitaire style, you can stack the cards however you like, it wont matter to me. But as a general concept, pile shuffling is not really a method of randomizing, and I find it a bit concerning so many people swear by it. In any card game, if you hit a bad pocket of energy/lands/etc. 'too many times', often it's probably just variance and confirmation bias. But if you decide to chalk it up to improper randomization, it seems a bit disrespectful to your opponents to go like: "Well, I'll just pile shuffle it first, so I have an even distribution of cards across my deck. That way, if I fail to properly randomize it afterwards, it will be an advantage for me, rather than a disadvantage." In fact, barring time constraints, you should in theory be able to let your opponent stack your deck card by card, in the worst way possible for you, and still be comfortable playing it, with proper subsequent randomization.
@SeekOutandPlay17 күн бұрын
@@JCEmotep The rules and logic you cite are limited to an MTG deck in tournament play. That does not apply outside of MTG or to the video because decks such as in 1066 are not “land/spell”, but instead cards of the same basic type or many more different types or have a play structure different than MTG. Which means that pile shuffling for many, if not most wargames that use cards is more than sufficient randomization. 1066 is a good example and the Undaunted series is another with nine different types of cards in which pile shuffling is more effective compared to altering the order of two types, land & spell. But more importantly, MTG functions differently than 1066 or Undaunted or frankly most wargames that use cards. Undaunted is deckbuilding, but you have access to cards not in the deck which are visible to all. 1066 uses variations of the same type of card, the needs of which are not known before the game because the situations that arise during the game are random. If you do find it concerning that people pile shuffle to randomize their decks, the offer an alternative form of shuffling that does not damage cards which are not sleeved. Riffle and side shuffling damages the cards that do not have sleeves. And even with sleeves, riffle shuffling still bends the cards near the corners which eventually affects their integrity. So, you have a deck of cards that are not sleeved, you want to play, and you do not want to damage the cards. Your form of randomization is ... what? And if the answer is "buy sleeves", then that falls outside the purpose of the video.

In my defense, I was using the combat example on Page 11 which also breaks down the stack to individual units. My choice was either to separate the units to explain the effects individually or keep them all stacked and use text so small that it would be unreadable. And since arrows and other indicators often get overlooked, I suppose I was in a no win situation regardless.
