Nice job! This is exactly what I thought Milwaukee should have done from the beginning. Just a fold down opening. Those rolling boxes are such a pain to get into

wow. Another guy who spends,,, 400-500 dollars on Packout stuff just to put... 1 or 2. Perhaps even a 3rd... Tool inside to store. What a fucking huge waste of space and money.

You could trim out more of the wood on inside and make room or put holes to eliminate weight as well

Thanks for showing us this. I'm about to attempt this on my toolbox. Any tips for getting the hinges aligned just right? I feel like that's where I would mess this up.
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! Hard to describe over text. Best suggestion is just to take a level or a straight edge and draw a straight line across so that the hinges are on the same plain. Other than that I pretty much just eyeball them and seem to work out pretty good.

Thanks! I've been looking for a tutorial. You didn't mention how you cut the opening (sides and bottom of the door). You did mention using the oscillating tool to shave off the top of the door. Did you use the oscillating tool for the door sides and bottom?
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! I cut the door out with a circular saw. Put a new framing blade on it and you'll be fine.

So when you use the front access the sides shouldn’t be flimsy with another box above. 🤷♂️. I think I’d rather use a small piece of aluminum stock to act as a spreader. Anyway, thanks for the video. 👍
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman2 ай бұрын
Yeah other people have recommended some aluminum or all thread or something like that. If I had to do it over again I probably would do it that way with a small piece of metal.

I did the same thing on my dewalt toughsystem 2.0. I have a short on my page just showing it. I didnt put a seal or nothing tho. I jus used a flat aluminum bar horizontally to brace the box together instead of a piece of wood. Less intrusive. I used smaller hinges but used 4. Not knocking anything you did. You did a good job. Looks like the dewalt box though i was able to cut lower then the packout though for a bigger opening because of not having that front handle. Everybody needs to do something like this. Its a must
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman4 ай бұрын
Yeah I wish I could have cut the opening lower too.

It blows my mind that Milwaukee has not released something like this yet. They have a packout cabinet but something with wheels that can support the weight above it is what so many people want.
@FranksShitBoxCollection2 ай бұрын
I was planning on using an old dolly/hand truck, a wall/floor mounting plate and a 2/3 drawer cabinet but it all still costs a lot more than doing something like what was shown in the video.

Milwaukee engineering was stupid to get our money just to say later we have listened to our customers and we're introducing a new version with slide out draws, like what the he'll were you think when you designed it

They make one that opens on the front and has the wheels attached so you can roll it around? Can you send me a link?
@marywel76156 ай бұрын
They need to sell the 1000's of bottom rolling big boxes that are out in stores b4 they'll release a rolling drawer unit. That's my best guess. I need a set of the removable wheels so I can try a 3d print mod for a set of drawers to roll without buying the $99 dolley.

I dont see any weather strip on sides. Which would make it not water proof at all. Rain may or may not enter but moisture wil get in there and rust tools.

Great job. Have a couple questions before I do it. Why use the 1x inside and not just spray foam? Is it for more stability? Then the stability wood inside, did you try other dimensions and find a 1x4 is the best? Thanks for the hard work on it.
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman7 ай бұрын
I used to vertical 1x so that I could have something to mount the weather stripping too. The vertical 1x was not for stability purposes I use the horizontal 1x4 for stability issues. I did not try other dimensions. Probably just a 1x2 would be substantial enough. Hope that helps answer your question!

To add to your mod, I’m wondering if a piece of extruded aluminum would work better for the cross brace. It would already have the threaded holes and would be lighter than the hardwood, plus have a lower profile. Just a thought in addition to your brilliant idea.

I just bought them without knowing all these details cause the brand talks by itself!!! Nice review dude didn’t know the details, definitely that reinforcements on the pockets for a knife and tape measure is a plus and the knee pockets for the pads didn’t know either another plus 👍🏼 thanks again bud 🍻

Just put the pencil in the pocket all the way against the wall where you want it to stay, hold it tight and put a few threads through and make a mini pocket for the pencil. Will still be able to use the rest of the pocket for other things but will keep your pencil in place.

The opening on the front pockets look really big, how are they? I feel like things would fall out if you laid down on your back or sitting in a sofa? That would really annoy me if that were the case.
@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! I would say the front pockets are a decent size. My whole hand can fit in the pocket with fingers extended. Only thing I put in my front pockets is receipts so I can't really say if stuff falls out when laying on your back. Very confident stuff won't fall out if you're sitting on a sofa.

I love it. Great solution. Simple, clean look, and waaay more functional. I have seen a couple different mods so far. One guy built a wooden drawer that slides out. Another did some sort of hinge cut like yours, but it was different. Theirs may have been cut lower. However, I think that yours is good, because items are less likely to just come tumbling out the second you unlatch the door. It might be nice to do a small follow up video or addendum to show the dimensions and what you can and can’t fit through the opening and what you like to try to put in there for yourself. I know, we’re all going to have different requirements for ourselves for what would work best and make the most sense to carry in there, but highlighting a few things that can and can’t fit and your preferred items to store in there might help each of us to get a better sense of how such a mod could work for each of us. Overall, great video!

@@JonathanSalmonsCraftsman Bikingviking11 is the guy who did the drawer mod. It’s a bit more limiting in what you could probably fit in it, but it might work for some. You each had some interesting approaches to addressing stiffening/ supporting the boxes once the cuts were made. I don’t recall him water testing his, or addressing that directly, but interesting to see the similarities and differences. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafRgIKFrJl2npYsi=b6-ydElWlA0AvK8y
