It seems implausible that it was any better at other times in human history. I am not objecting to reforms in child labor. It was clearly needed. But it seems more than a little questionable to claim that it was something new and unique, an evil product of industrialization. Dickens was a man who earned his livelihood by by telling lurid Victorian stories. “Blood sells” in publishing, then as now.
