It's so crazy how bad Japan sucked, their incompetence was shocking. The difference in intelligence between Japan and America was just crazy, it's like they were from another planet of lesser intelligence given all the completely fucking idiotic stuff they did that made absolutely no sense. They knew nothing about basic war concepts, and it shows in every aspect of their participation in the war. Complete idiots who make Italians look like Gods.

I agree that select members of either CG-47 Tico or the Burkes should be persevered. Perhaps tie in the name of the ship with the location she goes too. USS Mobile Bay would be a great addition to the Battleship Alabama park. Since the USS Carney got to do a massive amount of shooting in the Red Sea, place her either at Patriots Point next to the USS Laffey or In JAX with the DE USS Orleck. USS Leyte Gulf would be great in Pearl Harbor.

I think one that i can pretty much guarantee would be the Arthur M Anderson on the Great Lakes. Massively historically significant to the region. Kept in really good condition because she is so well known. Her company does not want to be the one to sink or run her into the ground. And......shes not a warship......the problem with post ww2 vessels is that alot of the conflicts that the us has been involved in are pretty controversial in the public conscious. I dont think any ship from the gulf war onward will be preserved for that reason. Just too much political baggage i think for a city to absorb. I live by a middle east conflicts memorial.....and i can tell you that place gets like 0 visitors. Sad? Yes. Ignorant to history? Absolutely. But it shows the public support for these modern day warships is not there and those are really hard stories to interest them with. Idk alot of people would wanna tour the USS Cole or the Uss Vincennes and learn the intricacies of those really sad events. And then learn about their role in a conflict they dont really think too fondly of. The ole lakers on the other hand are beloved and can successfully operate as museum ships as shown by the Mather and Valley Camp

I strongly disagree with the Navy practice of disabling the power plants. It even renders them unfit for reactivation except for raw material scrapping. With just disabled weapons they could still cruise once a year (or more) as a way to boost funds and if galleys were functional for hosting reunions and events they handicap funding by nearly half. Second with the reserve fleet, many could be used as Navy owned museum/training ships. The older reserve ships are more expendable and could be entrusted with ROTC programs for upkeep while training future crew with the basics. Two to six of a given class on each coast would keep a potential Museum ship from being stripped and form a rapid ready reserve. Also before scrapping as many I think we should place some for sell to allies after a decade to help fund replacements. This would help keep the yards going. Also we need to build more at a time. Ship one of a class cost as much as the next 3-4 combined.

Speaking to the title of this video rather than discussing the Proceedings article, did you have any information or thought whether the next museum ship would be a US Coast Guard vessel? I think for many maritime cities, USCG has much more presence than the US Navy (sad to say). The USCG ships seem popular for sale to allies, but they do have a story and I think they'd be easier to bring in and maintain than US Navy warships.

There's also the state these ships are in when the Navy turns them over to the museum fleet. They're often pretty thoroughly gutted and cannibalized before the museum gets their hands on them, and it's up to private donations to try to beg, borrow, and steal what's missing in order to be able to display the ship in any meaningful configuration, or even allow the tour route to go through all of what should be the interesting spaces.

It should be pointed out that Salem was saved as a Museum Ship although she never saw combat. She was however the very last Heavy Cruiser in the world after her sister ships ( Des Moine, and Newport News ) were scrapped. This in itself as well as the automated 8" 55 gun system which is her main armament makes Salem a rare bird indeed.

While they may not be historically significant they are literary significant the Tom Clancy fleet should have been saved. The Pharris, Rueben James, Dallas, Tico.

Yes. The former USS Barry which was a museum ship actually run my the USN at the Navy Yard in DC. They wouldn't pay for the upkeep and the DC government replaced a bridge which would have bottled it up at the Navy Yard forever. So the USN decided to scrap her rather than try and find another place to take her.

Who says its the ship museums job to be Navy assets for recruitment? If the Navy wants to attract and keep people, maybe they should increase base pay and family allowances.
@BearingStraight4 күн бұрын
I don't believe it's their job per se, but they are assets. Anecdotally, many people who have joined the military and especially the sea services as adults often visited museum ships at young ages. No argument about base pay and allowances. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

When it comes to the WW2 vessels, specifically the battleships in the US Navy, there's an argument that can be made while the Iowas were still in the Navy's hands. If Texas, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Alabama were saved, why weren't any of the Pearl Harbor veterans saved? Why was USS Nevada used as a target for Operation Crossroads? Why were Tennessee, California and West Virginia scraped when they were prime candidates to be turned into museum ships? Why wasn't USS Pennsylvania saved to honor her fallen sister? Then of course, you've got a number of the British vessels. But those reasons were clearer than their American counterparts. They could've saved Warspite, Renown, Duke of York and Vanguard from the breakers. 4 ships out of God knows how much. The only significant World War 2 surface vessel in the Royal Navy that was saved is HMS Belfast.
@BearingStraight4 күн бұрын
All good points. A history could be written about not saving ships. There was a working group in Philadelphia who had an interest in Pennsylvania, but it didn't get far. Same for New York City and BB-34. Getting port cities interested in battleships named for states without ports wasn't workable then. Only later, when the veterans began to look back more often than forward did folks realize what was and could be lost. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

@@BearingStraight No problem. 20th century battleships and battlecruisers are basically my hobby. Can't get enough talk about them. Ironically enough, I have World of Warships to thank for that. If I didn't get into the game, I'd never would've visited both USS New Jersey back in summer of 2021, and USS Massachusetts this past September. Experiences of both ships is just beyond incredible. I'm aiming to see USS Missouri sometime in the near future.

The most crucial asset for the Navy is ship repair facilities. Every available dry dock should be preserved, if the navy doesn’t have a use right now - then put a museum ship in it. If a war is going to happen and we need the shipyard, simple to refloat the ship. What about skill sets we’ll need to repair
@dedocentful5 күн бұрын
I got cut off. The resources that support the active navy can support museum ships when the navy doesn’t need them. A lean mindset doesn’t apply to resources that will take decades to rebuild. When you turn a dry dock into a parking lot it’s gone.

All good points, guys. It’s probably possible to create a Venn Diagram or list of boxes (location, money, ship’s history) that must be checked in order to preserve a major warship, and unfortunately most ships available today don’t check enough of those boxes, just as their predecessors didn’t check them before WWII. Nice job!

30:45 +1! No more CVNs named after presidents. Before presidents, Nimitz and Vinson, there were a few named after people (e.g. Franklin), but most fleet carriers were traditionally named after battles or earlier famous navy ships. Cancel the names of the upcoming Clinton, "W", and Doris Miller. Miller certainly deserves a ship--an Arleigh Burke DDG. The other two don't really merit naval ships at all. Bring back Lexington, Saratoga, and Hornet. With CG-48 retired, we could even have a Yorktown CVN.

The movie pt 109 was designed to help JFK’s planned 1964 reelection campaign. He liked to present himself as a military tough guy: he built 1000 ICBMs, convincing the public that we desperately needed them and he introduced regular forces into Vietnam figuring it would be an easy win. The reality of PT-109 is they were apparently off hiding and not standing watch. The book Japanese Destroyer Captain has a passage in which the second destroyer in line saw the pt boat and saw the first destroyer ram her. So claims of pitch black conditions are a lie, and as to the ridiculous notion that the 109 thought the Japanese would be coming from the other direction, who ever heard of a naval vessel that didn’t have lookouts in all directions?
