Can’t really understand the logic of downsizing by selling your seemingly favorite typewriter… you’re supposed to downsize the typewriters you DON’T like. No two typewriters are alike-even if identical and you hold on to the ones that suit you. If you’re strapped for cash I guess anything’s permissible, but it doesn’t come without the sting of regret. The ICBMs can be hitting American soil in some dystopian variant of this reality and that Triumph will still be working while those “custom keyboards” will be toxic detritus. Even then, back here in the real world, OCR or ICR software on smartphone apps are better than ever, certainly with AI, so it’s easier than ever to hop back and forth from analog to digital. This whole affair is kind of a tragedy really…

I just picked up this machine. I paid the guy before I even went to get it. Upon my arrival, I was excited already, and even more so when I discovered it's in cursive/script type face! I thought I must be dreaming! Then I discovered 2 problems. 1). The type-bar for the letter R is broken off, halfway up. Gotta try to find a replacement. Plus that probably won't be script, so I'll need to try to find a type slug, then solder it on. Yikes. 2). The notched rail is missing from back of carriage where the margin sliders go. I need to find one of those as well, then I'm hoping the installation isn't extra difficult.

The upper case adjustment is easy. You have a nut on either side of the segment that raises and lowers it and this sets the shift motion. Access through the side doors. circa 1940-1946.

Just got my first Erika 8…. Quite dirty & worn… but cleaning up nicely! Try WD-40, on a Qtip…. And gently clean all around the vibrator….especially the track that the vibrator slides on… gets gunked up with ribbon ink and dust. Then wipe the areas with a clean Qtip to get rid of the WD-40, which gets gummy over time. Good luck

Hey! That is not something I ever tried to fix. At that point the leather has been stretched and creased, i don’t think it can be undone. I suppose if it’s one of the models with removable/zippered cushions, you could possibly add some down fill to it… fwiw, that never really affected the sale.

Great video thank you. I’m looking for a stressless recliner for myself, at 6ft 2inches I am assuming a large is a must, the one you showed looked quite small? Also the bases come in a few different style options, so the wooden ring and curved vertical supports are not always present, depending on the style the owner chose. Customisable if you look on their website.

Try to find one with a sliding headrest, like the Reno, Taurus, or Prince. If you are tall and not too wide, a medium will work because you can raise the headrest.

I have this model. carriage was weak when moving to the left so I lubed up the carriage bearings and cranked up the mainspring. Not sure how far to tighten mainspring, or if the mainspring needs taken apart and lubed. It does work better but seems a bit still weak when the carriage is mostly to the left and not much more to slide to the left. This typewriter needed lube so I used 3 n 1 oil on every moving part I could find except for the letters themselves and where they attatch.

I have a gray 1952 with darker gray keys. There are a few minor differences but the body is the same without the button release ribbon cover. The magic margins get sticky. Like you say they can be set manually. They increase efficiency for a high volume typist using different sizes of paper through the course of the day. If they are set and forget and letter sized paper is always used then it doesn’t matter too much if they work or not. I usually don’t change the margins to type a quick note on a small piece of paper.

I stumbled into the custom mechanical keyboard space and so, when I need a little treat, im usually looking at new switches or a new Keycaps set, etc. as opposed to going out a looking for typewriters. And to be honest, the effort required to use one, as well as the overall noise level, has made me withdraw from the hobby.

I have a gray 1952. The magic margins were sticky but I’ve gotten them working better. It seems to be tuned for a light touch, hitting keys too hard will cause bad behavior, it is sensitive.

You probably know by now that you set the margins by moving the carriage to the respective margin stop that you want to change (left or right), then you pull either of the 'M' levers on the carriage toward you and keeping it pulled toward you, you move the carriage to where you want to have the margin and then you push the 'M' lever away from you. When moving the carriage to your desired new margin location, you can also use the back space key for fine adjustment. Manuals for the Facit T2 are readily available on line now.

I have a 1966 Adler Tippa 1, and had wondered if mine was the only one that made a loud "chock" sound each time the carriage moves a space. Your Gossen makes the same noise, so it must be part of the design. Looks like both of ours could use a capital/lower case adjustment. They're cool machines, well made. Would love to have interviewed the original designers and listened to the design choices/compromises they made to to design such a portable typewriter.
