The rainy weather is rather fitting today. As you go outside, you can hear the song in the air, and you feel a compulsion to recall your deep and darkened secrets. If tears come down, it will rain again tomorrow, but it will be less and less each day.

I think this is the only song by Nate I haven't heard. Ik it's a cover but man is it so nice hearing something different. Also hearing the itunes session songs for the first time. Thought I heard it all but there's always something new and it's very refreshing

The number of times I've quoted this song in the past decade is insane. I'll build bridges with these arms, I will not build a fortress? Beautiful. I want trees instead of gravestones, nothing to confess? Effervescent.

Nate Ruess - One of the most unique voices in R&R. He steals this song. Just rips it away from Van The Man.

Wouldn't think NightVale would have played a "RELIGION BAD" song. I think its better to respect peoples various beliefs, but thats just me.

Tekno Pathetic i wrote this song, and if you think it is about thinking that religion is inherently bad, you have deeply misunderstood the lyrics.

@@AnnaKohlweis What was the meaning of it? Comes across as someone leaving Religion cause its awful and guilts people
@AnnaKohlweis

@@KotoCrash it's all right there in the lyrics, listener. this is an autobiographic song about leaving the roman catholic church due to its history of sexual abuse, its exclusionary practices and shame- and guilt-based raising of children. yet, the narrator (me) has a sentimental, nostalgic connection to its music, its smells and sounds and rituals that have been ingrained in the brain since childhood. it's a bittersweet goodbye that oscillates between anger and the search for comfort and spirituality, and also comes with compromises (like joining family in christian rituals to keep the peace and show solidarity and love.) "religion" is an incredibly vast array of beliefs. this here is explicitly and obviously about one very specific part of it. thanks for showing interest!

plus, as a night vale listener from the beginning, i would definitely not be confused if they played music that is anti organized religion. critizising organized religion doesn't automatically mean criticizing the believers, but rather a system that, if left unchecked, might abuse its power. it would fit right into the narrative of night vale and i find it interesting that somebody else could think the exact opposite. how differently we often perceive storytelling!

From their bandcamp PRAYER IS THE BELL JAR YOU PUT OVER THIS GOODBYE. I’D RATHER LEAVE THIS EMBRACE BETWEEN YOU AND I. LET’S LOCK OUT THE BEARDED OLD MAN IN THE NIGHT GOWN. HE CAN TAP AGAINST THE GLASS BUT I’M NOT COMING OUT. I BUILD BRIDGES WITH THESE ARMS, I WILL NOT BUILD A FORTRESS. IN THE CIRCLE AROUND THE KITCHEN TABLE I SAY MY “AMEN” BECAUSE I FEEL BLESSED. SECRETLY HOPING WHILE JOINING HANDS THAT YOU CAN’T FEEL MY TREMBLING FINGERTIPS. IF I SIGN THIS PIECE OF PAPER DO I SELL MY SOUL ALONG WITH MY DUTIES? WE WON’T PUT OUR MONEY WHERE YOUR CATHOLIC MOUTH IS. EVEN THOUGH THE TEETH ARE LONG GONE THERE’S STILL BONE BENEATH THE GUMS AND THERE’S A LOT OF POTENTIAL IN A MIGHTY ORGAN. AND THEY TOLD US NOT TO CLAP SO WE CLAP AS LOUD AS WE CAN BECAUSE THE REVERB IN THOSE HOLY HALLS IS LIKE A LONG LOST FRIEND. HE KEEPS HITTING THE WALLS AND COMES ALL THE WAY BACK AGAIN. I WANT TREES INSTEAD OF GRAVESTONES AND NOTHING TO CONFESS. I GOT A SOFT SPOT FOR YOUR ANCIENT BOOKS OF HORROR STORIES. I GOT A MUSIC IN MY EARS FROM LONG LONG AGO AND FAR FAR AWAY AND I STILL HUM ITS TUNE BUT HOW COULD I EVER BELIEVE EVERY WORD IT SAYS TO ME? WE FOLLOW OUR OWN STEPS WHILE OUR SHADOWS KEEPS WATCHING US. THE WRONG STEPS WOULD BE NOT TO START THIS EXODUS.
