Great video. Trying to watch videos like this to educate myself as seriously considering buying a boat. And Hamble is actually the nearest Marina to me. ⛵️🚤

For a solo sailor looks like this single line reefing system is the best, excluding the furler main cause I don't think it's very common.

Another stellar video. We were given a swinging mooring on the outside bend of a largish tidal channel...flippin eck, fun and games at full chat during half tide.....still, keeps the bottom clean....

„For not everybody it’s easy, so let’s make it easy.“ Thanks! That should be the attitude of every experienced sailor who explains things. You don’t talk down to beginners just because they are beginners.👍

no, those water-based "renovators" are just colorants... you need oil to properly insulate it against further dagradation and eventual damage. teak can take a lot, doesn't mean it SHOULD. just treat it as you would any other wood - with kindness

I agree with never jumping off a boat and never throwing a line. The best method depends on boat: size, keel type, windage, rudder setup, bow thrusters, number of engines, cleat positions, crew size and skills, wind direction and strength, current direction and strength, orientation (stern or bow to), space, access channel, etc. Although the video is good, getting to know your boat and starting with easy landings working to more complex ones is the key. Always stay in control. If there is a plan B, you are chancing it. That said: I prefer if available midship cleat, fender work, springs and intelligent engine usage.

I’m a cruising instructor. I would never ask a crew member to jump off a moving boat. There is a real danger of slipping or tripping and getting a leg between the pontoon and the moving boat.

I'm all about electric motors for cars, boats, bikes, etc. But I don't like the rhetoric that they are zero pollution or zero emissions. This is simply not true and misleads people into thinking that they are not polluting when they in fact are, albeit a LOT less than combustion engines. Even a purely solar powered system has some amount of pollution associated with it. When these inaccurate statements are made it gives anti-electric proponents ammunition in their arguments against electric technologies. Electric is more than good enough to stand on its own merits.

Not really a very effective video for novices. Using lots of sailing jargon without giving time for people to understand doesn't help. I was stopping and starting like mad as I tried to remember what a luff is and what sailing like a shoe means. (Good, or bad?) Also it's great to see a man work, but I can't see what's happening with the sail. The rope he's got in the winch is not visible anywhere on the sail. So I can't see the 'effect' of what he's doing. So I'm sorry to disagree with so many people but I have no clue what is happening really except someone is winching a lot.

It would be even more confusing if he tried to explain it in generic terms. This is a great way to learn the terminology without apology. My MacGregor sailboat manual is confusing as hell because they tried to dummy it down in layman’s terms. Take the time to learn the language and you’ll be much better off.

Hi Tom I especially enjoyed your video as it speaks well to both neophyte and seasoned boater alike. You do a wonderful job of comparing and contrasting boat types , given the brevity of your presentation .Tom the the Contessa 32 is a sail boat for the ages. Like the Alberg , she lacks an expansive interior but that is the point to be made. The boat is a child of our oceans. And yes the Contessa 32 has circumnavigated. I am an old salt like yourself and have come to realize that like ones mind , so goes the boat. They are inexorably entwined. Tom , your speak of beam and comfort but let us not forget self righting moment. There is today , a sad lack of understanding of hull design , ballast ratio , hull speed ratio , form displacement verses self righting. And most galling of all , a child like dependance on electronic navigation. Paul in Canada

Should have included the state of tide during his briefing , with particular emphasis on rate and direction of the tidal stream . This is especially important when berthing in the River Hamble !
