There may be some truth to that theory although those windows are quite small. Maybe pop a few courses of siding off and check for fastener placement and fastener to sheathing gaps before conclusion. 🎉

Yep, I didn't think of that. However, we were there on other items. And this is an HOA, so everything related to the exterior needs approval from the board. 😢

question: When you changed out the spring inside, does the orientation of the spring matter when you put it back? In other words, if you look at the spring, you will see one end of the side is wider than the other end. So my question is, does it matter what side is on top? In your video, it looked like the wider part of the spring was on the bottom, and the thinner part was on top. If the spring was place upside down, would that cause the issue I am having?
@highqualityhomemaintenance756518 күн бұрын
Yes, the wider part of the spring goes on the bottom. I'm unsure if this would cause your problem of a hard turning handle, but I doubt it. If the handle is broken, then something is causing additional friction. Usually this friction is caused by some kind of misalignment of parts somewhere.
@ajaychand780617 күн бұрын
@@highqualityhomemaintenance7565 Okay, thank you for that answer. I did place the spring in the wrong way. The other issue I am having along with the hard-to-turn handle is, there is now moisture under the handle. Buecause it is hot water, the handle now gets steamy inside. I mean you can clearly see moisture collecting inside the acyrllic handle. I never had that issue before. What do you make of it?
@highqualityhomemaintenance756517 күн бұрын
@@ajaychand7806 As for the steam in the acrylic handle. It makes me think that the Hold Down Nut is leaking by, or the cartridge is defective and needs to be replaced.

@@highqualityhomemaintenance7565 I've been told to replace the cartridge by others. I think I will do just that!
@ajaychand780617 күн бұрын
May I ask one final question? It's about the cartridge. If you look on the bottom of the cartridge, one half is open, and the other half is covered by some sort of shiny plate. My question is, what part directly sits on the black washer inside? The open part, or they plated part?
@ajaychand780618 күн бұрын
Hi, I did what you said, but I am having a lot of difficulty. After I replaced the washer and put everything back together, something was very wrong. The handle was very hard to turn. It was nothing like what it was previously. Before the handle would turn with ease. The handle eventually broke after a few days. Im trying to figure this out. Can you help?

The handle... or the cartridge broke?
@ajaychand780618 күн бұрын
@@highqualityhomemaintenance7565 The handle broke in a few days. But I suspect it has something to do with the handle being so hard to turn. I think it just broke under the stress. Isn't it kind of dumb for a roofer to put the flashing UNDER the top row of shingles? (and then they NAIL the shingles into the flashing creating HOLES in the flashing for the rain water to get through). Shouldn't the Head wall Flashing (the more horizontal portion of the flashing) be laid on TOP of the top layer of shingles, and extend downward a ways? That way the water has no way to get under the shingles.
@eclipse-sh1qmZ3mOtcuaАй бұрын
ANd the Metal Flashing should be a THICK gauge of Metal so it doesn't tear so easily.

If there were window trims and you wanted to add a drip cap, would you install it above the trim or above the window and under the trim? Thanks for the video.
@highqualityhomemaintenance7565Ай бұрын
If you are talking about a picture frame style of a wood trim or Azek like trim you would need a drip cap above the window/ under the trim, and another above the trim/ under the siding, above the trim. Both places need a drip cap.
Lots of contractors will return a few boxes of leftovers and hide screwups in there. Big box stores don’t check and you just get a refund.

I had to custom order the metal for head wall flashing for my house. Nice thick metal. I put it in myself. We had our siding replaced by the insurance company after a storm and the contractor didn't put a drip cap, you can see the water going all the way through the wall into the inside of the garage...
@highqualityhomemaintenance75653 ай бұрын
That's what is called R&R insurance work. Your insurance will only Remove and Replace the siding. If the Drip cap was not there the contractor will not voluntarily install one. That's an upgrade.... even though it's required by code.
@jeffclark52063 ай бұрын
@@highqualityhomemaintenance7565 Right the problem stems from the original siding being a natural overhang and the new siding being recessed and now the trim is exposed at the top resulting in the water landing on it and running into the wall space. On top of that they didn't even mention or offer an "upgrade" to fix it they just slapped it on and left.
@highqualityhomemaintenance75653 ай бұрын
You may want to try this approach. If you have a picture of the old siding and how it provided water protection, that's your proof. Then show them how the new siding is performing... which is NOW leaking.

Outstanding job! I think the only thing that could have made it even more bulletproof... Would have been to cut the house wrap, tape the top of the step flashing to the OSB sheathing, And then mechanically layer the house wrap on top of the tape and step flashing... If the tape ever lost its stickiness, And separated from the tyvek, you could have a slight challenge... But if you apply the tape to The OSB and then layer the house wrap over it, even if the tape peels off the OSB, the mechanical layers will keep the water moving to the outside. The chances of the tape failing is pretty low... But it's one more point of failure that we have the ability to eliminate If we are so inclined... Great work!! Looking forward to more videos!

So, there was a leak. But on the shingles, all the holes were caulked. You removed the shingles and observed that there was a joint gap and a hole and determined that the leak was through it. However, it was covered by shingles. How did the water get through the shingles??
@highqualityhomemaintenance75655 ай бұрын
In this case, we put a new piece of flat aluminum under all of the ripped and (holy) holey aluminum. We extended it out as far as the next shingle would be placed. Thereby correcting this issue.

I installed GutterGlove (stainless micro-mesh purchased from Home Depot). I installed them 4 years ago and have blown off the upper roof 2 times since then. I clean the guards on my lower roof (garage and family room) with a brush mounted to an extension pole, when I see an accumulation. If you do this maintenance every so often, you won't have any problems. I used to get up on the roof 4 to 6 times a year to blow out the gutters. This makes my life a lot easier.
