It was fundamentally necessary for people to begin procreating when our bodies became physically mature. And that has, as a matter of fact, been at the age of puberty. Imagine if they had modern liberal sensibilities. Humanity would not have made it. Some people like to bring up infant mortality in respect to the life expectancy back then. The irony is that infant mortality didn't have a major effect on the low average. Go ahead and look at averages that include and exclude the infant mortality rate in the 7th century. WITH infant mortality it drops down to between 20.3 and 22.2. And that's not even counting the harsh and warlike environment of 7th century Arabia. Throughout history once you reach puberty you're considered an adult. You take on adult responsibilities, you engage in marriage, etc. There was no concept of "adolescence" in the past. You're a child until you're not. This is consistent throughout the vast majority of human societies and was fundamental to both human survival and the flourishing of humanity. Unless you genuinely believe that throughout history humankind were pedos and we only just now got it right. If our Prophet PBUH was really into children, why wait for her to reach puberty? Why not just consummate the marriage right then and there? Yet we know he waited 3 years until she reached puberty. This fact alone demonstrates the error of the assertion that people make. According to Aisha herself, the same person who narrates the Hadith where she says she was 9 when her marriage was consummated, she said she was an adult when that happened. In just about every civilization before the modern era puberty was considered adulthood. And it's no secret that girls generally reach puberty between 8 to 13 years old. So by every metric she was an adult. Islam puts limitations on marriage. One of them being puberty. Another is taking into account the urf, or customs and culture of the land. If it would be against the local customs of the land to marry young, like here in the west, then Islamic law doesn't allow it. Another principal is cause no harm and do not let harm be caused to you. So if the marriage will result in harm to either you or the person you're marrying it is impermissible. I could go on, but I think that gets the point across. And depending on how you look at the Bible the Bible either has no stipulated age of consent (which it does not have, at least not explicitly) or one can infer that the Bible alludes to puberty being the age of consent due to verses like Ezekiel 16:7-8. Regardless of which viewpoint you take, there should be no issue with the Islamic stipulations. That's the beauty of Islam. The guidance is not for one specific time and place. This is applicable for all times and all places.
