The reason we have a bad name in foreign countries is also because of Mustard Oil 😢 That thing smells. I understand It is mouthwatering to a Bihari or a UP walah or a Punjabi as in this case but the smell can put someone off of Indian food forever. The smell is horrible. Always go for a neutral smelling oil when it comes to food preparation.

Mustard oil is labeled for external use only because it has high ammount of erucic acid which is considered toxic for the heart and leads to coronary heart disease. Rapeseed plant from which Canolla oil is made also has high erucic acid, so they filter it to remove most of the erucic acid in it leaving behind only small amount of the erucic acid. I would personally still not consume Canola oil as it is higly processed and the processing procedure turns it rancid. I would use avocado oil for high smoke point cooking and extra virgin olive oil for every thing else. South Asians blame their genetics for high proportions of heart disease, but diet also plays a huge factor. While we can not change our genetics, we certainly can change our diet. Our ancestors were far more active than us and their daily work to earn their livelihood was more labour intensive so they could easily burn off the high amounts of saturated fats. South Asians of today follow a more sedentary lifestyle especially in the towns and cities and thus its is hard for their body to digest such high amounts of saturated fats. Plus all those kurkure, bhujiya namkeens, samosay, pakoday etc aren't helping us much either.

Mustard oil is labelled external use omky because some study in canada found it is harmful for rats and without human study, they just extrapolated it and said we are not allowing mustard oil consumption in our country with zero evidence of its harmful effects on humans.
