He was great at playing Festus and I think it's one of those roles that could not have been pulled off by any other actor. Festus was, very honest, well liked and respected by the towns people, a deputy the Marshall and other deputies knew would always have their back. And something that I always thought was interesting is that Festus had no education and couldn't even read. Yet he was very, very wise and had plain old common sense. He could read people and know when someone was lying to him. The writers and producers created a memorable character.

Loved 'The Wild, Wild West,' as a kid. Years later, I bumped into him, as he was leaving the bar, at Bear Valley ski resort (Calif.). He was feeling no pain. I was astonished to note, that he was only about 5'5" tall.

He was my heartthrob since I was very young. My favorite was Crimson Pirate. My father used to tease me about it and told me Burt was really a dwarf. Whenever a Burt Lancaster movie was going to be on my father would say that the dwarf was on. He was pretty good in Jim Thorpe. But it always struck me that he had blue eyes and a New York accent when he was playing an Indian.

I enjoyed this because the person who does the narrating knows exactly how to go ahead and get to the point where you can understand and don’t have to listen for a half a day
