The motorist gave you plenty of space when overtaking - although clearly he had to break the 20 mph speed limit to do so. The part that horrifies me here is the fact that you overtook him when he was signalling right when he came up behind the bus! 😮

Neal is a preck Had a couple of set tos with him over the years - 1. "It's _absolutely_ necessary to sound your horn at cyclists". His words, myemphasis 2. A rider being hit from behind on a roundabout by a driver joining contributed to the collision. Apparently they should have realised the the driver wasn't paying attention and slowed to allow the driver out... I've never met someone so confidently wrong. Well, ok, I have , but he's still a preck.

Ashley is correct that we use primary position to communicate to drivers not to pass. ALWAYS. However, when it comes to secondary position is where he gets it wrong because it does NOT ALWAYS convey that we are communicating for drivers to pass because the situation can entirely change depending on whether there is an oncoming car or not and there's not always a safe opportunity to take up primary when we need it.

Silvio I tried to reason with him but I just gave up with him. I used you and Cycling Mikey as examples of camera cyclists who ride in primary position as you can keep up with the traffic and especially you Silvio as you are a very fast cyclist who is usually exceeding the speed limit for motor vehicles. But in your videos cars still overtake dangerously regularly even though you are exceeding the speed limit for motor vehicles. I’ve had stupid close passes in primary when there is a whole lane next to some of these dangerous drivers but Ashley was being an apologist for potential m*rderers. If you can’t overtake safely then don’t overtake and you will not get points on your licence, simple as that. Plus the vast majority of cyclists don’t report every single close pass because a) it is very time consuming b) they will probably only get a warning letter which is the driver getting away with it anyway c) some close passes are done unintentionally e.g. the road is a bit narrow to pass d) the most dangerous overtakes are just going to hold up in court better and lessen the chance of leaving disappointed

You’re absolutely right, Silvio. We all remember what Ash mentioned in his entrapment video about riding in the primary position. However, if he were to analyze this video, he’d likely find a way to blame you. He might say something like, ‘You’re looking at your watch and not paying attention to the road,’ just to defend the car driver, even though the driver is clearly at fault.

This whole "generating content" idea is ridiculous. Why would ANYBODY risk grievous bodily harm for clicks? If you "encourage close passes" you won't know how close they might be and how likely you will be knocked down. I read somewhere that KZbin doesn't pay anything unless you have more than a LOT of views: I recall 80,000, far beyond what most cycling videos will generate, and even then how much do they pay? Here is what I think is going on. Cyclists run video cams to (1) increase enforcement by having police act on them (doesn't happen here in the US), (2) act as an unassailable witness in negotiating insurance settlements (hospital bill for being hit on a bicycle can run $180-$250K in the US), (3) help other cyclists avoid similar situations, (4) enable police, insurance agents, lawyers to search for the motorist's previous bad acts by posting plate number in the YT description, (5) for a commercial vehicle, dox the company if they don't respond to direct contacts. The cams record constantly, like a dash cam, while cyclists are just getting around on the roadways on their normal routes, just trying to get where they are going without being hit. If something dangerous or unusual happens, I can review the footage (to see what actually happened and what I can do better), and if I had a YT cycling channel, post it for the above reasons and to invite HELPFUL comment on ways to deal with that issue.

He should come to West Yorkshire and spend a few days on the many really busy roads. He will soon learn that dangerous drivers drive dangerously no matter where the cyclist is in the road. Used to have a bike that operated the rear brake by reversing the pedal direction, the front brake was standard. Took some getting used to but was really handy once you'd mastered it, a bit like the hand gear change on my Ariel, Dead useful for braking while signalling or doing doughnuts on the cinder carpark we used to use as a raceway. @@michaelchallen It was called a coaster brake. It was the only brake on the basic 1-speeds sold in the US in the 1950's-1970's, no front brake. Thanks to weight transfer when slowing, you get more braking power from the front wheel than the rear before the tire skids.

@@paulflory3532 ah thanks, interesting. I remember it being good around town for slowing for lights etc. I wonder if the bike was an import from the US? or maybe some English manufacturer copied the idea? I never saw it again. I liked the way you could switch from reverse pedalling to brake to forward pedalling to drive and the take up was instant, with no slack in the chain system like you get in hand braking. Given that 75% of braking power is directed toward the front brake on a motorcycle, and I assume the same applies to a pedal cycle, it must have been pretty hairy riding with only a coaster brake on the rear wheel.
