1:13 I don't mean to interfere with your rearing policy, but we are concerned that the body shape of all KOI, with only the lower half of the body bulging out like a goldfish, is the opposite of what we are aiming for, and that growth may be stunted.

The fact that you’re still trying to feed them in this temperature is mind boggling. No wonder they are flashing with all that rotting food polluting the water.
@PondKoiTipsTricks16 күн бұрын
I feed them a mix of pond flake a fish additive and garlic mix have done for 10 years and when I had a camera in the pond a couple of years ago I watched as they took it yes some gets left behind and I take it out weekly dont do it daily as I dont like turning the air or skimmer on in the winter which makes the water colder. The pond has a 6" thick layer of insulation around it 2ft high on the outside wall which keeps the lower part of the pond at around 6 to 8c. In Japan many people feed koi well below 8°C if they are active and koi taking food emerge in spring in good health. The same applies to the UK if the koi feel the need to top up the energy reserves that they are depleting in winter running their metabolic processes such as osmoregulation, their heart and their gills. Those koi also emerge in spring in good health with no signs of any digestive problems. I would also say I have not had any parasites on my fish in over 6 years and although I have everything to treat the pond and koi I have never used any. I feel the fish start to eat early and have the ability to fight off infections more through the year. I would not feed them sinking food like a lot of keepers do. Everyone has a differant idea for the winter feeding. Some drop Micro Worms into the pond these are live food which you can grow yourself in a 2lt bottle and Vinegar Ells. The fish will take these all winter.

@@PondKoiTipsTricks 90% of your fish look like rugby balls though which would suggest that they are eating far too much than they need.

Don't need to feed them once the temp is below 10c. They slow down their metabolism and stop eating when temps get that low. You can start feeding again when temps go above 10c.

Hi Alan. You may need to consider the fumes coming from a parafin heater, they do give off carbon monoxide, how would that affect your fish if enclosed? Just a thought. Glad the nitrate filters are working, I'm considering getting some. I have a planted pond with a planted bog filter system which works amazingly well when the plants are growing but have to rely on water changes when the plants die back.

To be honest i have never covered my ponds for winters in 50+ years. I live in Wales at a fairly high altitude and my main pond is at ground level in my North facing back garden hence the temperatures can get relatively low. However my pond will only freeze 2 or 3 times a year but never completely. The waterfall area never freezes nor does the area where the return from my filters enters the water. With the pond being 4 feet deep at one end my koi tend to congregate at the bottom there and seem content enough. Apart from helping prevent freezing, do you find any other benefits to covering your pond? Would be interested to hear. 👍👍

@jeremymanning21324 ай бұрын
Hi Alan. This is common in ponds with lower flow rates particularly natural or wildlife ponds which have little or very low water movement. Not normally seen in modern koi ponds with modern filter systems due to much higher flow and better mixing of filtered/unfiltered water. If you want to cure it you cut raise the flow rate (if your filter is capable) or simply drop another pump in your pond to create more circulation. My advice would be to ask yourself if it is affecting your fish? If not it shouldn't be a concern. All the best. 👍👍

Brilliant Alan. I did exactly the same 25 years ago with a bin. Never had any problems after I made it. Crystal clear water in a 4 square meter pond. The liner finally gave way this year, so a total rebuild on the go. And yes, the trusty wheely bin will be put back into action. Managed to save 25 fish before the water drained away. All crap dug out, 25 years worth. 2 one ton bags of it. New liner, new uv lamp, same old wheely bin.
