I’ve performed the complete Ligeti requiem with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. It’s kind of like stage magic. Ask yourself what would The Great Gyorgi have to do in order to make this prestidigitation work? And that’s what he did. Before the performance I told my wife “you’ll be fascinated: they can do that?” I told my mother-in-law “You’ll hate it like nothing you’ve ever hated before.”

I taught business and conversational English to a close relative of Sibelius’s and he lived close by to Sibelius’s home on the opposite side of the road, and his great aunt had married Sibelius. My ‘student’ owned one of of the composer’s violins and I was given the opportunity to hold this, one day. Oh how I wished I knew how to play it. (I’m a percussionist!). I’m not Finnish, but lived there over 30 years. Sibelius’s composed the essence of Finland. 🇫🇮

I was played this by my music teacher 62 years ago, i have never forgotten it or her. To me this has always been 'thinking' music, to be alone with this music has always given me clear thinking time............and peace.

Today (eight day of December) is the birthday of Sibelius which is also celebrated as the national music's day in Finland. I leave this comment today on all the Sibelius videos I listen, as to mark the occasion.

I haven't listened to this piece for something like 50 years and for some reason, KZbin suggested it. When it clicked on it, I was able to follow every note just like I remembered. A superb piece.

A harsh, quiet and beautiful landscape. Jean Sibelius made it resonate in the hearts of finnisch people. The World loves this music. Karelia is as immortal as this outstandig music. May be that's reason I like the Finns, I certainly Do! So warmest greetings to Finland from Germany.

I’m 1/4 Finnish and Sibelius has been a favorite composer of mine since teenage years…I didn’t find out about my Finnish make-up until I had a genetic test…so proud I’m more Finnish that anything else! I hope to see Helsinki before I die.

Thank you for this, herra Sibelius! I live in Karjala whole my live (Kemin piiri), and I am happy for the fact that there is something that is dedicated to my region!

They made a film about New Zealand life in the 1970s using this music. The film and music inspired Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) to get into film making. The music was so popular that people wanted to use it as the National Anthem for New Zealand.

When I was a child, this was the first piece of music that I actively sought information about because an extract was used as the introduction to a British TV news documentary programme called This Week and I wanted to hear all of it. Now in my 60s, but the power of this music still has the same effect.
