Hey! Great videos. I'm based in the North-West and applied the rigidiser well over 24hrs ago but is still quite wet. Any tips? Its a damp climate up here!

"This is where things started going wrong..." Incorrect- things went wrong when you attached the regulator to the tank BEFORE attaching hose to regulator.... you wouldn't have screwed up the threads if you went hose->regulator, regulator assembly to tank

I don't think it's tempering, but it's a sintering process

Kind of a random question, but I was wondering if I could ask you about the furnace. Would you be able to make small batches of charcoal by putting wood into a closed container with a couple vent holes for the steam/wood gases?
@sinrock853 жыл бұрын
No tape needed on those fittings. Also too much tape. Also wrong kind of tape, you used tape for water not gas. Gas tape is usually yellow indicating smaller pore size to block gas particles and not large pores to stop water molecules.

I applied the rigidiser to my new 10Kg Devil forge but it remains quite flexible and easily cracked. My earlier forge was made from an old gas bottle with the top removed and I used Pyruma fire cement and nothing else and it worked great for many melts. The original forge would only accept a 6 Kg crucible so I decided to upgrade to this new forge. The ceramic wool is quite thick and renders the 10 Kg forge too small internally to accept a 10 Kg crucible ! - It almost touches the sides and I can't fit lifting tongs into the gap. So my only two options seem to be, to use a smaller crucible or to remove the blanket and just coat the inside with the Pyruma cement.

i think the largest crucible that i can fit in mine is the 8kg. You need to dry the rigidiser before you use it. I have a video up showing how to do this. i dont know if you should remove the wool, you could maybe try and remove some of it, and then compress it show it doesnt stick out as much, then coat it with the rigidiser again. I am just happy to stick with the smaller crucibles for now. in the future i may make a bigger furnace

@@irishmelter1017 My rigidiser has dried, but is pretty brittle to the touch. A few bit have broken away which I have patched with my old favourite - KOS fire cement. I used this in my earlier forge pot and it set like rock. Eventually, as time passes, I guess all my coating on the ceramic wool will end up coated with KOS (Same as Pyruma). This fire cement sticks to earlier coatings seamlessly. I'm so impressed with it, I'm now having thoughts about possibly also using it to coat foam patterns before burying them in greensand to support them.

Why are you using tape on a tapered fitting, more so one with pressurized gas going through a regulator? Huge no no? Tape can break lose and go into the regulator and ruin it. Also, you used about 3x more than you should have for a fitting that should use it. 3-4 wraps max, any more and your changing the OD. That’s why you couldn’t use the fitting from the regulator to the tube.

So what's the rigidizer for? Does it help the ceramic insulation to last longer? Do you also need it on the forge that has the cement instead of the blanket/fiber? I have the cement version biggest one

I don't know why your using tape on fittings that are designed to seal on a taper and not the thread. If the fittings were BSPT or NPT then yes , tape is needed.

Taking the crucible out of the furnace and letting it cool down that quickly is very bad for it. Especially if its the crucibles first temper. You could get cracks and stresses may form in it.

Hi. Thanks for making the videos. I noticed you tweaking the gas regulator at one point. Is the pressure meant to change when you do it or is it an on off? I fired my forge up twice now and can't seem to control the pressure with the gas regulator tap, so I manage pressure by opening the cylinder more.. just wondering what I should expect!
@irishmelter10173 жыл бұрын
yeah you should be able to control the pressure... Turning clockwise to increase it, and anti clockwise to decrease. I know on mine I had to have the tap screwed almost all the way out... To the left or anti clockwise... Then increase gradually, like quarter of a turn or less at a time... you should see the pressure rising then. let me know if this helps, if not I can do a video trying to explain it
