As a United supporter of that period Utd were never a great "possesion" team but we knew how to defend and take our chances, on the counter, in big games

Fantastic theme, the legendary Arthur Montford and a top level European game. The 80s were brilliant.

Quien se tomó la molestia de subir este recuerdo ya tan arcaico? Quien haya sido, MUCHAS GRACIAS! Yo ví todo éste torneo en 1987, pasando los partidos a veces tan tarde como las 11 pm. Participaron: 1) Vasco da Gama (campeón) 2) Rosario Central 3) Roma 4) Guadalajara 5) Dundee United 6) America

Well! When Cloughie speaks & gives praise, it counts. Two marvellous football men & that is a fine tribute from Cloughie indeed. I’m a Rangers fan, however, I wish both of these men had been Rangers managers at some point. Like Souness they’d both have dispensed of that obscene signing policy our custodian fools had in place.

Players nowadays would go home crying to their mammies if Jim Mclean was their manager.

Never heard anyone swear as much at a football game, never mind the dug out, as Jim McLean. Definitely not someone to have fallen out with.

These men would be considered a bully nowadays, but they were experts at making the most of the talents available to them. Modern posers just couldn't handle it.

This is still united to this day, play a small team and struggle, go to barcelona and beat them! Although I doubt the team today could beat forfar and certainly would have a chance against barcelona!

Im from USA and was there visiting family for New Years. They surprised us with tickets for the match. What a fun time we had. My family didn’t like that I supported Liverpool as it was EPL but we became Dundee Utd supporters that day as well.

forget your Guardiolas etc, these 2 legends took small clubs to the pinnacle of football, not with endless bags of money either. Lets see pep do what they did?

what an idiotic refereeing standard, quite used to that at Tannadice though! Softest of all penalties. Surely any normal person would play the match out as 0-0! What a muppet! Robson's goal was absolutely spot on, nothing wrong with it at all. Agree with what Morris said, the ref was told who would win!

they forget the fact that Jim transferred to Killie, where he played alongside his brothers Tommy & Wullie and a trainee John Barnes, who he later skelped for being cheeky and rude to him off air when he interviewed him

Prime example of then and now - a jokes made about a recovering alcoholic “sipping a Guinness” it’s laughed off and forgotten quicker than it was said - today he would probably have to make a grovelling apology to the Twitter mob and be given absolute hell by the “be kind brigade” much better times and a much better game back then 👍

Big Jim and Dundee Utd were robbed of a european cup final ( champions league final) by a cheating bribed referee...they schooled the Italian champions it shouldve been dundee utd v liverpool. And in 1987 they just lost steam in the final but Gothenburg were a very strong team with the nucleus of the 1994 world cup semi finalists...utd shouldve won but mcclean could be harsh on his players that must in part explain so many final failures

Rangers fan, but that Utd side between 82 - 86 were brilliant to watch, probably lost to the better team in the UEFA final, but cheated out of a European cup final against Liverpool in 84 when Roma officials bribed the ref. McLean was a legend of a manager, albeit an absolute headcase.
