It's interesting how I can enjoy this piece in two very different ways; this is the fastest I've seen K. 540 played, Claudio Arrau played it in 16:44 (nearly half the speed of Horowitz). Arrau's take is so slow that it brings out all these deep, pensive, almost-ominous vibes but it almost puts me to sleep; Horowitz just runs right through it in a sort of Cliffs' Notes take.

I compared this with Samson Francois, and even this is enough to dismiss this Rubinstein take, who is great with the Nocturnes. But even better _(in a different way than the highly original Francois)_ are Idil Biret, Evgeny Koroliov, Janina Fialkowska and, of course, ABM. Try a direct comparison, Mazurka by Mazurka, as I did and you will see.

Too heavy. 136 is not suitable for a full orchestra. Also rushed.

My first time hearing this recording was while sitting in Vance Reger's home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was one of John Mack's true oboe protege in so many ways. Vance was on faculty at the NC School of the Arts. Changing the subject: People today don't understand how there are SO many differences between live and recording. All concerts are recorded by the house engineer with his microphones for the weekly radio broadcast with the chosen best of the 3 performances. Other than that.... what you heard was what was played note for note. Cleveland during this era in particular didn't get its due acknowledgement due to Epic's subpar recordings. Chicago was the luckiest and then Detroit with the Mercury label. It had little to do with the actual music making but the clarity of the sound captured more completely than Epics dry and muted sound which is NOT how Severance Hall sounds. The only other recording was the first direct to disk digital recording of the Cleveland Winds with Fennell. I am SO glad I went to CIM in the mid 80s.... the art of color and blending from all and many of Szell's bowings created the rich sound from his strings working in absolute unity. It has nothing to do with solo-is-tic playing. So many good memories.

I got the Peter and the Wolf/NYP/LB album when i was 5 , when i was 6, i got the Rossini/NYP/LB album. I am now 60 and i get goosebumps to the same degree that i did as a shorty. Nobody, but Nobody, comes close to the chemistry that they had at taking grreat music to the next level of the heavens. Thank God for the Columbia Record Club!!

Believe it or not I just discovered this today. The music that is not the video. I was listening to my favorite Austin Texas classical station and heard this music while love is riding home from work on my electric scooter. I kept saying to myself that sounds like Rossini and when I got into my apartment the host confirmed that I was right. Along the way I said I really like this and I would say now that I have discovered another favorite piece! 😸

Dieter Goldmann is one of fictitious artists (pianists and conductors) created by the fraudulent producer and conductor(??) Alfred Scholz (Alberto Lizzio).... who knows how old are all those recordings and who are the real artists.... and none knows if Scholz with all those pseudonyms was a real conductor or not...

Janis was always a fine musician but in this early period (1952)he was still channeling his teacher Horowitz’s massive tone and coiled phrasing. Listen to the G minor Ballade from the same Columbia record. Sadly, Janis didn’t record another Chopin album until forty years later by which time, despite debilitating arthritis that limited his repertoire, his identification with Chopin - by his own account - was almost mystical. Yet even ten years after this 1952 album, Janis had ripened. Listen to the B minor sonata from a remarkable 1964 Salt Lake City recital posted on KZbin as well as a French documentary (in English) on Chopin, Altogether a great and heroic artist.

I love this piece. However, I have to be careful not to drive while this is playing. If listening to music I walk or drive to it. While this does have some very ethereal moments it's mostly a very intense driving beat. Yeah, my little brother still has nightmares about me driving him to school that morning weaving in and out of traffic listening to this.
