That's funny because, despite playing the game many times over the years, I wasn't always led to this scene.

Trivia: Izumi was originally designed to be in the first game as Ryo’s primary love interest who shared Ryo’s passion for Martial Arts but developers changed their minds and opted instead for the damsel in distress type love interest and was replaced by Nozomi Harasaki.

Playing this teenager about to set out into the world as a teenager about to set out into the world was a fundamental experience for a lot of us I think. You had your whole life ahead of you, and the world was big. Maybe bigger than it is now for kids with smartphones. If you were wandering dark streets at night (and you weren’t a karate expert) you had only your wits to rely on. But a romantic sense of adventure called you forth, pushed on and inspired by childhood experiences like playing Shenmue. I feel like each one of us wound up somewhere interesting in life. There’s time to have another deep drink of it though, and to be true to the optimistic, nervous, and wide-eyed youth you can still remember.

The Lan Di character is a HUGE part of what attracted me to this game. This game, without a doubt, is within the top 3 gaming experiences of my life. I in fact, depending on what we're measuring, it's the number 1 gaming experience of my life. It is the first of this game play style that I experienced. I had to be 14, but the things this game did to make me feel accomplished were just seared into my memory. First, it made me feel accomplished by doing investigative work and following leads until I find certain people. That was just never an experience I had in a game before that. I felt like I was in an 80s action movie. The aesthetics of the game were just next level at the time. And playing with a real world time system was just something else. Having to be places at certain times. Falling short of an investigation and having to go home with the feeling of "I gotta continue tomorrow". Being outside in Japan at night- as an American boy, it made me feel like I was a "dangerous man of the world". Sometimes when I had time to kill, I read my notes and tried to piece the story along while I wait for a shop to open or some guy I was looking for. Second, they made a hero that would have resigned with any of the target demographic of the time- Kids. Ryo was a kid, just like us. He was cool, he knew how to fight. He was smart. You know damn well none of us would be out at some dangerous docks fighting bikers at 9 something at night lol. But chasing down Lan Di from Japan to China was one of the coolest gaming adventures I ever had.

Really thankful for this video guide. I first played this game 23 years ago then played it again with my kids like 10 years ago because I wanted to share one of the best video game experiences with my boys, they immediately fell in love with it. The other day my boys (now 29, 25, and 24) started reminiscing about the games we all enjoyed from years past and so we decided to purchase the digital versions for the PS5 and we ended up getting stuck here because we couldn't remember where to go...4 heads and we still failed lol but thanks to you we are now back on our nostalgic journey.
